I am of the perhaps misguided belief that the widespread nature of Covid-19 might be overestimated.  My reasoning is this:  we have yet to see a big run on hospitals.  Now, it's entirely possible that even the overestimates of infection might not be high enough for 1 in 5 to stress healthcare facilities this week, but it still gives me pause.

Don't get me wrong, I am fully on board with the near certainty that some 100M Americans or more will contract this within the next year, but the guesstimates of CURRENT cases might be a bit overblown, just given the fact that we haven't seen much hospitalization (yet).  If that number should represent 10-20% of infections, then either it's not quite that bad YET or we are horribly misdiagnosing what we are seeing.  At the very least, we should be able to rule out flu for almost all cases.  Maybe we're still facing a rush of "unknown" respiratory illnesses that are actually CV, but can't be diagnosed because testing is lagging so badly.  I'll accept that as a reason for a delay.

Complete anecdote, but I know several doctors in the area (wife is a Stanford doc) are definitely seeing an uptick in flu-like symptoms and diagnoses of respiratory syncytial virus, which would have greatly overlapping symptoms.

So, in Houston, Mayor Turner declares a 7 day state of emergency.  I grew up in Houston, have many FB friends still there.  Many of them are pretty Trumpy.

How are they reacting?  Perfectly on-brand, that's how.

Remember, folks -- COVID-19 is just a librul hoax designed to hurt the economy and Dear Leader.

    Fucking facepalm.

    And ruin spring break, apparently

Legally, it would just be easier for everyone to separate from the two private schools and WVU if the other conference just invites over the rest of these teams.

Nobody cares about Baylor or TCU--not to mention those Pac schools want absolutely nothing to do with religious schools (see BYU forever snub from the Pac). WVU is too far away. KSU or ISU are what's left and ISU provides a whole different state and is an AAU institution.

It would just be simpler to get the Pac schools to invite over pieces than it would be for the Big XII to get USC/UCLA and others to leave to come here. My guess is that a network (CBS or NBC) will lead the charge here and time this for the GOR expiring over here in 2025. If the Pac just wants 4 programs to not go any higher than 14, I suspect it would be the Texoma 4 or take out Tech for KU with the other three. I could even see a deal to invite over UT, OU, KU, and ISU, just to keep the AAU total higher for those in the academic leadership in the Pac.

    The PAC + 4 would be 16, not 14.

Two, who says it's even accurate? We have "way more power" than in 2011? By what measure? .... I don't see how that's changed other than in comparison to the Pac-12, which is presumably weaker.

Well, ya, that's pretty much it.

On a USC message board I read this :

We are in a pissing contest between Texas and Stanford

Texas told Stanford no because they wanted to keep the LHN.

Stanford is trying to go after Texas' academic standing

Texas is trying to use us to force Stanford in a corner

Stanford should stick to academics and allow someone else to run the athletic end.

But supposedly CBS wants to underwrite a Big 12/PAC 12 merge

Texas has way more power now than they did in 2011.
Stanford made a huge mistake and they cannot admit it.

any truth to Stanford being the one leading the conference?

    Which board is that from?

Right.  The losses of those schools were felt in a sense of geographic cohesion, rivalry, alumni base, etc.  Extremely important for fan interest in college football, but definitely not a hit from the sense of enjoying the games.  Playing Nebraska meant more to me than any game other than Iowa, because they were the bully growing up, and the whole state is one giant cocksucking cult of Tom Osborne.  Missouri was a big one as well, just because we all know they're sister fucking slaver meth-heads, and the Telephone Trophy is hilarious.  There's no way TCU or WVU could ever generate the same response.

Yep, exactly. And why Baylor fans may be the one group (we don't admit it much) that really enjoyed TCU getting into the conference; they're a natural rival. Not knocking TCU - they have a very strong football resume in the past 25 years - I just know that other fanbases probably weren't as jazzed as most Bear fans were.

I think both TCU and WVU have been entertaining members and good fits - one geographically, the other culturally.  I went to Morgantown in 2013 and had a blast.  Their fans were extremely grateful to be playing games against schools that gave a shit about football.

There was not a loss of football quality by swapping them for the 4 that left.  None of those schools were any better at actual sports than TCU or WVU, and have continued to exist at the same level.  That 2014 TCU team would probably wax any squad that any of the 4 have put together in that time frame, save maybe the 2012 Aggy team.

Agreed all around. TCU and WVU great adds from a competitive standpoint, but there's no denying they don't fully make-up for the loss of four institutions, especially four with such big alumni bases and more sports tradition/ history in some cases (especially Nebraska, obviously).

I think 2014 TCU could have smacked 2012 Aggy, for the record. That was a fantastic team. The Baylor-TCU game that year was an all-time great for me.

Agreed.  The Big 12 was a really good fit, and even still is with the exception of WVU.  It covered every major college between the Mississippi and the Rockies except for Piggy and Herky - who are both solid cultural fits in their current arrangement.  Sure, the Plains are a forgotten part of the country without a ton of sexy media markets, but people fucking love college sports here.

The original Big XII was indeed pretty epic. As a Baylor fan I actually enjoy having TCU in the league, but I understand few others probably feel the same. I also don't dislike WVU - they're odd if you look on a map, but culturally they feel right in line with Ames, Stillwater, Lubbock, etc.

that Colorado-Nebraska rivalry, culminating in the 2001 game, was pretty fucking enjoyable

it doesn't feel like a "rivalry" when they play now

It was pretty fucking epic. Disagreed on that last sentence though. Both games the last two years have been pure good old rivalry hatred, and immensely enjoyable. Both had a lot of emotions, a lot of big plays, and down-to-the-wire suspense.

    Please explain it to me

To be clear I'm only spit-balling. My completely out-of-my-ass opinion is USC doesn't want to leave the PAC unless they really have no other option, and them talking about all options being on the table are just to 1) apply more heat to Scott & Co. to figure shit out and 2) setup future convos where, if revenue increases seem to be only marginal, they make the case their value to the conference warrants them getting a bigger share than WSU, OSU, etc.

It doesn't seem like there is anymore $ to be squeezed from the Pac. I mean where is this extra $ going to come from?  Is the plan to just milk Washington st and Oregon st? I know they tried to sell part of their network for a cash injection but it seems that didn't happen, or are they still holding out hope there?

I meant going to unequal revenue distributions, giving USC a bigger slice, not necessarily creating new revenue out of the blue.

The B12 isn't USC's only option.  If they'd consider traveling to far-flung options in Texas and the plains states, then they'd likely consider traveling to far-flung options in the midwest as well.  And they're an AAU university.

USC to B1G talk not going away.

That thought has crossed my mind. With the long relationship/ mutual respect the B1G and PAC have, perhaps 4-6 PAC teams see if they can become the western arm of a B1G PAC conference. The four Cali schools, UO, and UW perhaps.

But I doubt anything happens and bet USC is just trying to lay the groundwork for pressuring the PAC into maybe giving them a bigger piece of the TV pie.
