  1. Saw the High Point match and it was a really rough match for Shook. White and Rounsville struggled with passing in the first set but stabilized in the next two (though Hahn and Petersen did OK). My feeling is that in the past the so-so passes would turn into so-so setting or the passes would be better'd by the setter (Collins, Allison, Kocher). Unfortunately, Shook makes some of the average passes worse. Shook also bump sets many balls even when they're passed within three steps of her starting position.

Good thing I saw was that Shook was aggressive in getting Butler involved. Block also sent many balls back, explaining why High Point had more digs and attacks.

  2. Awesome job!

Still a bit frustrated with Rounsville's serving. First point of the fourth match was a service error. Logan ended up serving for the rest of the set but it'd be foolish for Logan to serve the first point of every set and then get subbed out on serve receive- just wasting a sub.

TCU's stud 2019 commit Jenson Brooksby just won Kalamazoo, meaning he will be granted a wildcard into the main draw of the US Open later this month. TCU is probably shaking now hoping he doesn't pull his verbal and decide to go straight pro. For our sake, lets hope he does go straight pro

I'm all for him not attending TCU but he'll basically be a walking Bye at the US Open. Looking at his pro results, he's losing to journeymen quite regularly at the futures level. He also has never traveled outside North America for a tournament and has never played in a junior grand slam. For his sake, college will be the smarter option.

  4. Summer updates-

Ortiz, Scott and Markes played Canada future tournies in June. All got ATP points. Markes has played some more tournaments in July and has some really impressive results.

Incoming freshman Huang also played some future tournaments in both Canada and Taiwan.

Yuya Ito is on the Asian Games roster to represent Japan.

Alum Glasspool won a futures tourney. Micky Reyes-Varela won his first ATP tournament and has a career high of 51 in the world in doubles.

  5. Initial impression of the schedule is that it's a really tough one. Basically all the same opponents from last year with the exception of Pepperdine (in place of Florida) and Rice (in place of Texas State and UTRGV). Big 12 will be tougher next year as Baylor returns almost everyone, Kansas and OU have highly ranked recruits that can change the programs, and TCU is rumored to get the highest ranked unsigned player from class of 2018. Got to win more indoor matches this year.

Saw this Statesman article which may be of interest to you VB aficionados. 😊    As a casual follower,  surprised it is difficult to get top teams to come to Austin.

In each of the past two years, Texas has had its volleyball season ended by Stanford in the NCAA tournament. This fall, Texas and Stanford will reunite in September.

On Sept. 11, the Longhorns will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for a rematch between two teams that will likely be top-ten programs when the AVCA releases its preseason poll on Wednesday. Three days later, Texas and Stanford will return to Austin for another non-conference match. Texas last participated in a home-and-home non-conference series in 2014 (Florida).

Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said he and Stanford’s Kevin Hambly came up with this plan when they met up for dinner on the recruiting trail.

“He’s a big believer in scheduling tough as well. It was a very easy conversation,” Elliott said.

Elliott told the American-Statesman on Tuesday that he has had trouble getting top-flight teams — also known as schools that would benefit UT’s RPI and ticket sales — to commit to travelling to Austin. Of the nine non-conference matches that Texas has hosted the past two seasons, only three featured a ranked guest. Elliott also said he was looking into mini-tournaments in the future in which Texas would “go to one (high-level) team on a Tuesday and come back and play another team on a Friday or Saturday.”

Elliott added that another benefit of a home-and-home series with a school like Stanford is not having to provide guarantee payouts for lower-tier guests. Said UT’s 18th-year coach: “That way we’ll get more quality matches at home for our fans. Our goal is to schedule tough and learn from that and see where we are. It’s kind of double-sided.”

One team that Elliott said he may try to work out a home-and-home series with? Northern Iowa.

The Panthers have reached the NCAA tournament in 10 of the last 12 seasons, so playing the Missouri Valley Conference stalwarts wouldn’t hurt UT’s RPI. Northern Iowa’s longtime coach is also the mother of Texas freshman libero Sydney Petersen. Petersen’s twin sister, Baylee, is an outside hitter at Northern Iowa.

“We’re both pretty competitive, so I think we’d like it and we’d fight about it for a little bit,” Sydney Petersen said of potentially playing her sister. “It’d be fun.”

Scheduling hard opponents have always been historically tough for Texas

That was why for a few years Texas has played opponents such as the Italian A2 team, the Israeli national team and Chinese professional clubs during the season. Just a shortage of teams willing to come to Austin

I suspect one of the reasons is that Texas is geographically isolated of consistently top teams. For teams ranked in the top 20, it's hard to fly to Austin and find another quality opponent for the weekend within driving distance. Otherwise they'd be breaking the budget. This is the exact problem Hawaii encounters.

  7. Yes it's a big win for Bianca. Molinaro has yet to turn pro (will graduate from HS in 2019 and decide later in the next year) so she's one of the top recruits in the world.

Should also be noted Anna has reached a new personal best ranking at 766.

  8. Anna is in the final of the Bucharest tourney! Good sign beating Stoica, who is most likely playing lines 2-4 at Tech next year.

Bianca had a tough draw having former top 100 Mitu (coming back from giving birth) in the first round.

  9. Turati's are in Romania this week and have reached the doubles final!

Will face Mitu (former top 100 player) and Mandlik (teenage daughter of a four time Grand Slam champion and Hall of Famer Hana Mandlikova)

Also playing in this tourney is Tech signee Stoica

    In Big 12 coaching news:

-Iowa State finally got a new coach. He was the Tech Assistant Coach this year

-KState head coach left to take the new HC position at Colorado.

-OK State's assistant coach Hayley Carter has left her position to turn pro. Program

I'm so ignorant of softball that I didn't even know men played fastpitch at competitive levels.  My interest in fastpitch softball comes from youth baseball.  The two sports are so close that it's hard to be a fan of baseball without appreciating and liking softball.  I love watching a good softball game.  I'm not a fan of the tiny infield though.

One of the past alums Marlee Galbaldon- her brother played fast pitch and was once the volunteer assistant coach for the team

I think the commentator (either Scarborough or Hooks) said she was shocked to see a young guy pitching

What happened with that guy? I missed it all.

And what happened to the sensational freshman shotputter Adrian Piperi? Last I saw he won the B12 championship with a put of 66' 3". That should've gotten him into the NCAA meet, but haven't heard anything.

Congrats to Coach Floreal..... Welcome to the Forty Acres!

Adrian? He got fourth in outdoors at NCAAs

    Sategna had alcohol problems

  12. Summer tennis has started...Bojana is in the 25K qualifying right now in South Carolina

She beat Emily Fanning, who just played #1 at Kentucky and performed admirably in the tough SEC

Next up is against Gail Brodsky, journey woman on the tour

  13. I have a friend who was an athlete at Lafeyette (not softball) and from what I understand from her, Lotief is still extremely held in high regard there from within the athletics department

I wouldn't mind if Texas did hire him. As said, Texas could do a lot worse.

  14. The ITA draft for indoors just finished

    https://www.slam.tennis/ita/draft/2019/ncaaw

As coaches choose where they play, you can get a feeling of which teams coaches want to avoid and others who they think they can beat for next season.

Texas was the last regional to fill up. Will play Middle Tennessee State. Baylor (surprising) and Wichita State will be the other teams.

Other teams that coaches had no confidence of beating are Stanford, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, etc.....the usual powerhouses

On the flip side, Oklahoma State and Northwestern were targeted very early. All spots filled up before the eighth call out!

CDC is a  wise person.      I am sure he will consult with his AD friends and other appropriate people.   TexasStrong mentioned that CDC knew Mike Candrea, Arizona coach,  from his time at Arizona as asst AD.    Good place to start for advice.

The more I think about this situation, my guess (and wild guess only) is that they may have wanted to terminate CC last year,  but she asked for and was granted permission to serve the final year without an extension.    It's not normal for Texas to let a coach serve final year without an extension or retirement announcement.    Meaning that they have long been reviewing candidates.

Interesting thought...could be why Wright decided to forego her last year.
