Okay so @perfectchaos007 and @Aleemay, who should CDC be reaching out to gauge interest? :)

Hmmm.....I'm almost sure CDC will talk to Joffe for recommendations since Joffe is known to have a lot (even compared to other coaches) of contacts within the tennis world as Joffe has worked on all levels- junior development, professional, college, and national development programs.

If CDC were looking for Texas ties, there's Rubio at Denver (but he hasn't proven himself with his recruits yet) and Roditi at TCU. Berque should get a courtesy interview as the current AC and he has top level experience as head coach of a major program (Michigan).

Other names to throw out that I'd impressed with-John Roddick (good luck wrestling him away from the national tennis center and UCF), Tony Bresky of Wake Forest (if CDC wants to aim for the moon like he did with track and softball), Matt Roberts of Mississippi State(young coach with great potential)

Written on the fly, so these are just some educated guesses

I remember the Georgetown tennis coach being suddenly let go, causing the graduate assistant Courtney Dolehide to be head coach of both women's and men's team. A head scratcher at the time because Dolehide had left her position here as women's assistant coach to pursue education (MBA) and not climb the tennis coaching ranks. Reading this, it all makes sense.

  3. http://www.dailytexanonline.com/2019/03/08/turati-twins-bring-new-meaning-to-doubles-play-at-texas

Article about the Turati twins last week. Now I know this writer is new and that this is a student newspaper, but there are some pretty bad errors in this and past articles.

"The victories also caught the eye of head coach Howard Joffe who was looking to revitalize the Longhorns after missing multiple NCAA Tournaments despite having scholarship players."

Texas only missed the NCAA tournament one year. Fendick-McCain had a 100% record of advancing to the postseason.

Thats right. A lot of our players, particularly the Turatis and Poluta have singles games that don't translate as well to doubles compared to their singles. Take Bianca for example whos one of the best singles players in college tennis. Bianca uses a lot of variety in her singles game, but that variety can be snuffed out easier in doubles because there's a woman at the net. In doubles, the three things that matter MORE than they do in singles are power, height, and aggressive net play. So there are definitely singles players who's games could translate easier into doubles, but most of our players have games better suited for singles.

Yep. Anna and Bianca hit loopy ground strokes as that's their style to grind things out. Poluta also hits loopy strokes due to her short stature which can easily be taken out of the air by the net person. Bojana has the ground game to be a great doubles player but her volleying technique needs some improving. Tijana also tends to go through lapses where she's a statue at net.

On the other hand, a good doubles player but not necessarily a good singles player would be someone with fast hands and flat ground strokes hitting spots X and Y but who tends to over think the mental aspect and shanks balls like crazy (think Wagland)

Is Tijana hurt? I have no problem keeping our senior Poluta in singles but I would rather have her JUST in singles and perhaps Tijana just in doubles. Height is an advantage in doubles and Tijana has the 13” advantage over Poluta there

For some reason, I did not see her yesterday at the courts. But she was at the basketball center today with the rest of her teammates and seemed physically fine.

  6. Big series of home matches for the Horns these next few weeks. Really important to get some wins against top 40 opponents. Texas is down in the ITA rankings due to having only three good wins. Baylor currently counts as a ranked win but they're not going to be in the rankings next week (now 5-11 and playing two walk-ons).

Florida State is very talented, having two French players with past rankings in the top 800.

How would a college team vs. a pro team be at all competitive?

Not saying the match will be competitive but this is almost commonplace in other NCAA sports during the off season. The basketball and volleyball teams are playing pro teams whenever they go on their European tours. The Japanese Softball team (2nd in the world) also played University of Florida this year in the preseason. There's also a lot of amateurs playing pro tournaments in golf and tennis.

  8. Opened up the bakery shop today against Incarnate Word. I know this match was in place of the Tulane match but not sure how much of a gain if any there were for the players. Yuya's opponent never had a game point and only had one break point the whole match.

Played Tree tough. Losing 4-3 to #1 is nothing to be sad about

Stanford returned every member from last year's championships team in May (and then promptly added 2 blue chip freshmen)

Poluta beating Janice Shin (who was 15-1 before today's match at line 5) and Tijana beating Higuchi (who was 33-1 before today's match at line 6) shows how deep this team can be. Add in the fact that Petra's status is unknown, this is a good sign of how high the ceiling can be for this team.

  10. Loss to UM, bummer. But let's not forget how Texas lost to (a less talented) Illinois team and went 0-3 last year at indoor nationals before turning things around in the outdoor season

Still a good win against Ohio State this weekend with a shorthanded team

  11. Looks like the injury bug is hitting not only Texas but also Oklahoma State. A day after a stunning loss to Arkansas (picked to finish last in the SEC after 5 of their starting 6 didn't return this year), they are currently down 3-1 to UCLA with two losses coming from retiring mid-match.

  12. Good win considering there was so many factors against the Horns: Road trip in the middle of the polar vortex, playing indoors, Petra injured, short roster (walk ons didn't come for the road trip), Katie having to step in and delivering not only in singles but also doubles with a new partner (interesting sight seeing the tallest and shortest playing together)

A win is a win and Texas will get the 10% road bonus in the computer rankings

No time to rest as Michigan is on Sunday

Watched Tijana play some doubles and she plays just how I expected. Big strokes, big serve, but can spray some errors. She came through in doubles today though as Texas takes the doubles point against Ohio State. Singles about to start

She was missing so many forehand returns lol. Thank goodness it started working again when they were down match point. (saved 2 in the tb)

In bad news, it looks like Granic is in a boot

  14. Interesting thought about forfeiting the season. IMO, it's a lose-lose situation.

Don't play the season and everyone sits around unhappy and restless. Contracts and agreements between other schools, PAC 12, TV networks, sponsors, etc. get broken leading to financial penalties. Alumni giving, fan support, and funding goes down the drain.

Play the season with 10 position players (majority freshmen) and 2 pitchers and risk player health. Continual losing through the PAC 12 decreases player moral and won't make a good impression with recruiting.

  15. Good to see Labrana continuing her fine form, also nice to see Tijana get her first dual match doubles win in a tight situation

Now on to the indoor portion of the season, just a reminder of last year:

    Outdoors: 19-0

    Indoors: 5-5

  16. 4-0 win over MTSU. Fernanda looked really good- much more confident and fluid forehand compared to last year

Also it looks like Poluta did not make herself available for Fed Cup this year.  South Africa named its team and I'm confident to say she is at a higher level than two of the five members on the team. Makes sense as this year Fed Cup dates are during indoor nationals (compared to last year where Texas was playing bottom of the league opponents) and Texas is a bit short handed with the roster.

  17. As I suspected, no Marta for the year

Texas returns a talented and experienced lineup that includes one senior (Katie Poluta), three juniors (Petra Granic, Anna Turati and Bianca Turati) and two sophomores (Fernanda Labraña and Bojana Markovic)  from last year's squad. Sophomore Marta Perez-Mur will redshirt the 2019 season after suffering a right knee injury during fall competition. The Longhorns add freshman Tijana Spasojevic (Belgrade, Serbia), who was ranked as high as No. 836 in the WTA singles rankings. Head coach Howard Joffe is in his fourth season leading the UT program.

Hope the rest of the team stays healthy!
