Someone drowns or otherwise receives a death blow. People try to resuscitate them and finally give up. After a dramatic pause, the dead person coughs up water (or a big gasp of air), sits up quickly and gasps a few more times, then they are fine as if they were just napping and nothing happened.

Oh god this. I hate this.

  2. When TV shows begin with a brief teaser clip of some dramatic event, and then flash back to "Three Days Ago..." or whatever to fill in the backstory to explain how things developed. Pulp Fiction was 25 years ago; being gratuitously non-linear isn't all that clever anymore.

  3. Thanks for all the replies. This was a shady deal and my cousin doesn't seem to want to fight it (and may have no recourse). Basically a neighbor suggested they split the cost of replacing the fence between their properties. This was agreed to with no paperwork or estimate. The neighbor hired some guy (not a professional) to do it.  After work is done, neighbor presents a receipt for $3000 and asks to be reimbursed for half, which she paid. I strongly suspect neighbor is in cahoots with the guy he hired to build the fence.

  4. Of all the countless actors I've seen play a psychopath who rips a teenage girl (or young woman) in half by using them as a human tractor-trailer hitch, his performance was head and shoulders above the rest.

(But seriously, anytime you saw his name in the credits of something, you knew it was going to deliver.)

  5. It wasn't exactly my favorite place to eat, but damn. There's hardly anything left around campus that I recognize.

I wish I had taken a lot of photos of the drag & campus when I was a student, but it was well before cell phones had cameras. Hell it was almost before cell phones, except for the "brick" style.

For the record, horrible first date movie.

I'll counter that with Schindler's List.

Raise you both with A Clockwork Orange.

  7. I know the real answer is "it depends on the job", but what would be a reasonable cost or range (per linear foot) for installation of a new cedar privacy fence (6 ft high, treated wood posts set in concrete, but no frills)?  Needs to include labor, teardown & disposal of old fencing material, etc. Location is Austin if that's a factor.

Google gives me some numbers like $15-20 per linear foot, but I'm not sure if that includes labor or just materials.

Asking because a family member was just charged over $3000 for about 60-70 feet of basic fencing. Thanks....

  8. Sometimes I have to** drive SH130 and I was fine with that when the traffic was light and the road was good enough to drive fast as shit. At least I felt like i was getting my money's worth. But now there is construction everywhere with reduced speed limits and more traffic, it's just like every other fucked up highway around here.

** OK, I could take regular 183 to Lockhart but fuck that.

Julio Gonzalez, a Mariel boat “refugee” from Cuba holds the mass murder record in the US.

In 1990 he used $1 worth of gasoline to burn 87 people (mostly Hondurans) to death in the Happy Land nightclub fire in the Bronx of New York City. He was an all around loser who had been jilted by his gf that worked at the club as a hat check girl. He did the deed after he was thrown out of the unlicensed joint at 3am by the bouncer.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding some aspect of this but i would think Tim McVeigh and the 9/11 hijackers have this Julio guy covered and then some.

  10. The NWS warning for New Orleans before Katrina was something else:

AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH
AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES
AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE
ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE
WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.

POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN
AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING
    INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY
THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW
CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE
    KILLED.

  11. It's incredible how many different products Chrysler was able to squeeze out of the K-car platform. Budget family sedan? Reliant K. Slap some chrome and leather on it and you have the "luxury" New Yorker.  A sports car? Dodge Daytona. Even the fucking minivan.  And who could forget the Chrysler TC by Maserati...

  12. I'm going to miss full-service branch banking. When I have a small discrepancy with a check or some other unusual situation, I've usually been able to work that out with the human employees at my local bank. If it comes down to purely electronic/web/phone-based customer service, it will be a nightmare.

It already pisses me off so much when I go into my local branch, see a long line, and they only have one or two tellers at the counter (where there are positions and terminals for 6 or 8 tellers).  Same with airline ticket/check-in counters.  For some things, i want a human to fix my shit.
