Do we have any actual proof of this threat? Seriously. Are there any studies done or any research about increased crime caused by immigration? Or is all this based on fear mongering tweets and the the racists eating this up.

    Try google?

Foreign Nationals make up about 25% of the US prison population.

    https://www.usimmigration.com/foreign-national-prison.html

    ------

Those that are in the country illegally (about 3.5% of the US population) account for a disproportionate amount of certain criminal offenses.

Broken down by some of the primary offenses, illegal immigrants represented 16.8 percent of drug trafficking cases, 20.0 percent of kidnapping/hostage taking, 74.1 percent of drug possession, 12.3 percent of money laundering, and 12.0 percent of murder convictions.

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/07/07/illegal-immigrants-accounted-for-nearly-37-percent-of-federal-sentences-in-fy-2014/

There might be other reasons for why the conviction rate is so high in these cases.  Might be that prosecutors and judges aren't giving illegals the benefit of the doubt.

No.  I think that there will be some blustering, some market reaction, some more blustering, more market reaction and then we sit down carve something out that lets Trump and China save face without meaningfully impacting the status quo.

So basically what he did with North Korea?

I guess that's possible.  I don't think the stock market really cares about this though.. It's up 1% today.

So wait... are you telling me that this is merely an annual occurrence and not a national security crisis that needs to be immediately addressed before we are all murdered?!?

Yep and the administration is using it as an excuse to send troops to the border to make immigration a national security concern.  I was speculating that someone on the right ended up setting this up so they could have the images and headlines to sensationalize the story.  Now that I know it's been going on for a while, I think it's probably just the administration being opportunistic so he could justify using military funds to fund the border wall.

Link?  I'm not seeing these reports of the disbanding, etc, but haven't been looking long and have been away from the computer till not too long ago today.

So reduced illegal immigration through strength?  Threaten to put the military on the border and it would affect the Mexican public's ability to cross the border as they do now.  So stop the people from Central America and then the Mexicans can still cross, unless Trump puts the military on the border till he gets his wall anyway.

Interesting news.  We'll see how it plays out.

Interestingly enough.. this isn't the first time this group has organized a migrant caravan.  It's just the first time we've heard about it.

The caravan was organized by U.S-based advocacy group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, which seeks to draw attention to the rights of migrants and provide them with aid. The Mexican government says the caravan, which like others travels by road, rail and on foot, has been organized every year since 2010.

haha is that why Hayek recommended Chile as a preferred model of neoliberalism to Thatcher?

I haven't seen that word used before so I can't speak to that.  I know they praised steps they took to open up their markets and stabilize their currency.  I am sure it had something to do with the politics of the era considering it was the height of the cold war.

lol Friedrich von Hayek advised Pinochet after the fall of the Allende government.  Hayek even held a meeting of the Mont Perelin Society at Viña del Mar in 1981.

He made 2 visits over 4 years and made recommendations that were obviously ignored.  It was controversial at the time and it's been written about plenty.  Chile was about as close you can get to be considered Fascist without actually being classified as such.

The problems in Honduras started when the US deported a shitload of gangbangers and walked away from any public security or Econ development programs.

I am not going to put the blame on the US government for deporting violent criminals out of our country.   Send us doctors, lawyers and engineers..  They can keep the gang bangers and figure out what to do with them.

I'd also stipulate that we shouldn't be giving money to corrupt governments but directly helping communities within those countries.  If a foreign government is incompetent, our aid should be dependent on it actually reaching the people it's intended to help.

Hmm. Didn't realize the "caravan" had demands too. They demand an end to political corruption in thier central American countries, LGBTQIA rights and open borders.

So flooding America with thier people is supposed to fix thier home countries?

    Their*

Also..  There is no fucking way that this group is being sponsored by people who are actually pro-immigration/open borders.  I'm sure the people in the caravan actually believe this shit, but they appear to be political pawns.  They are hitting every single GOP talking point in order to motivate Republicans for midterm elections.

Also, Switzerland is not an island and every EU citizen is able to enter freely and work.  It is able to grow economically through the growth of the EU, primarily by providing a niche industry to the EU.  It isn't doing as well as Monaco though who never grows either and provides another niche.  But we aren't a city-state nor are we a small part of a larger union, so we can't replicate the Swiss model.

The world does have finite resources.  So does the USA. The question you asked was not whether there was any sustainable population limit for the USA, it was what that limit was.  We aren't even close to it.  We could hold over a billion comfortably.

Switzerland is way crazy strict on immigration and there are heavy restrictions on EU citizens that try to work there.  How many refugees do you think Switzerland took in?

I also don't know when banking became niche, but it's cute that you think that Switzerland was prosperous because of the EU when they are pretty much the only part of Europe that tells the rest of the continent to go fuck itself on a regular basis.  Horrible example.

    ------------------

I never asked what the sustainable population limit was for the USA, but rather at what point additional immigration would become a net loss for the country.   In your scenario, you'd be cool with immigrating ~650 million people into the USA without any regard for the social consequences.  Do you really think the country would be better off if we did that overnight?  I don't think we'd have the infrastructure to handle it let alone the impact of government services.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about immigration from just south/central America.  I'm asking about immigration from anywhere because eventually you can't take in more migrants because as I pointed out before, immigrants (all races) are more likely to end up on government assistance than people who are native born.  You'll run out of money at some point.  Wouldn't it be cheaper to just stop subsidizing abortions at planned parent in the hood?  Doesn't that hurt economic growth?

There are obviously other variables to consider but I don't see anything but arbitrary numbers and "this sounds good so i'll say it" talking points.    I don' think GDP growth is the only measurement we should take into consideration but it's certainly a big one.
