  1. This is quite a read. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/08/14/influenceable-texas-politics-ken-paxton/

Notable from the above link: Brad Parscale, who ran Trump's digital efforts in 2016 and ended up running his 2020 campaign until he was drummed out, has moved to Midland and is now apparently working for Tim Dunn, the billionaire behind Empower Texans (and many other far-far-far-right-wing efforts).  Not a good sign, as Parscale is known for a lot of dirty tactics.

  2. MQS, his Empower Texans cronies and their various associated groups - and the billionaires that fund them - have done more to hurt the Lone Star State and ruin the so-called Texas mystique over the last two decades than anyone else.

  3. If D&J had simply waited out the six-month noncompete and made a few subtle changes so they weren't so clearly leveraging direct IP from their Ticket show, it's likely none of this legal brouhaha would ever happen. It was their intense desire to stick it to the man so immediately after departure, without wanting to change basically anything, that has gotten them to this point.

  4. Quote

He's running for president (but really the VP spot or at least a cabinet post). That's all this is about. He needs headlines, and he's hoping the Biden admin. gives it to him.

But here’s the thing: It would have to be a GOP president for him to make it that far, and right now that still looks like it’d be Trump.  And Trump wouldn’t give him the chance because he probably sees his disability as a sign of weakness.

The first appearance(s) of Irving Cares at Frank Parra during a Rant remote were legitimately  funny.

  6. We went to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis a few weeks back. The first exhibit (while you’re waiting for the intro film) is about the history of the slave trade. It has life-size sculpted figures huddled in chains and recorded sounds of cries of agony. It left me shook - and Desantis should be forced to sit in there for a while and take it in.

  7. I'm at about 600 miles for 2023 so far, but not much MTB lately.  When I have ridden in June/July so far it's been almost all paved trails - mainly the loop from North Dallas down around WRL and back - because there's more of a breeze.  I need to figure out motivation to get up super early and go ride actual unpaved trails while it's still semi-tolerable out.

I really don't get the monetization for separate content.

The Ticket always says that they have more streaming listeners than any other radio station.  That's great.  Good for them.  But they can't seem to sell ads on their stream.  There are times when they just play some 10-second instrumentals for 30 or 60 seconds because of a lack of ads.

And that's really wild to me, because as a listener, it's very easy for me to switch stations on the radio when ads come on.  I just hit one button on my car steering wheel to switch to the next preset station.  It's a lot harder for me to change stations while streaming.  So more often than not, I just suffer through the ads while streaming--something I would never do while listening to over-the-air radio.

And by the way--this isn't just a phenomena with the Ticket.  I've noticed this same thing while streaming Rangers and Stars games on Bally's.  And yes--I'll acknowledge that Cumulus and Bally's are not the best-run companies in the sports-entertainment space.  But ESPN streaming also has a lot fewer advertisers than its cable/satellite service.

And I just really don't understand that.

Having worked in the biz, I can say with relative certainty that there are still a lot of AEs with broadcast background who can sell traditional radio ads all day long, but can't seem to figure out how to attractively market the value proposition of streaming ads.

  9. Pretty fascinating story about the making of “Vogue” here from legendary DJ/producer Shep Pettibone. I’d argue that the “Vogue” video by David Fincher (and the complementary but  completely different take on it at the MTV Video Music Awards) are the most iconic single thing Madonna did in a career full of iconic moments.

  10. This got brought up in the Titanic submersible thread for some reason, but it seemed more apropo for this one.  My question:  Where the heck is this skate park-looking concrete ramp and stairwell structure under Mopac?  Can't recall ever seeing it and it's not easily identifiable from Google Maps.

Someone want to elaborate on the beef between the Musers, etc. and Norm when Norm first started?  I've seen it referenced and heard Bob mention something in passing about how odd it was to celebrate Norm's 25 years in radio when he had only been at The Ticket a few months and they were on team Musers at the time.  That was all probably before my time in Dallas or certainly before I was listening to the Ticket regularly.

Basically, when he was at KLIF, Norm thought the Ticket was unserious, and the Ticket guys thought Norm was goofy and too inside-baseball for wider audiences.  One of Gordo's earliest bits was Norm and his sidekick Andy Panda, and it made frequent references to a gambling addiction, which apparently Norm really took umbrage to.

You can hear one of the really early ones (from while Norm was still on KLIF) here - it's track #8 in the player: https://www.theunticket.com/5-years-of-failed-bits-ticket-cd/

(Side note: Pretty much every track of the CD audio linked above is greatness, and a direct glimpse into the first few years of the little Ticket.)

The fun thing is that vouchers would do the most damage to the MAGAts in Southlake that want it the most.

If there are suddenly a bunch of kids going to private school instead of Southlake, two things happen: (1) Southlake's attendance drops, meaning its state funding drops, which means that its rankings go down, or (2) to forestall that from happening, Carroll ISD starts accepting a lot of transfers.  In either event, the value of a house in Southlake goes down.

If I am looking for a house in the Dallas suburbs, why would I possibly move to Southlake if the school district's rankings are shit?  And if the school district is keeping its rankings/state funding up by accepting transfers, why would I pay a premium to move to Southlake when I can live in a neighboring burg and transfer into the school?

This is already happening in Southlake, thanks to the Patriot Mobile takeover of the school board. Teachers and support staff leaving in droves, district now facing a multi-million dollar shortfall, etc. The Southlake Together Twitter account (@southlake4all) does a pretty good job chronicling the insanity.

That's Midlake, a band from Denton, Texas. Didn't know they were this big overseas, or maybe not.  But pretty cool they got placement on a hit show.

what could have happened for them to have huge a huge drop? damn, even downbeat loses 1/3rd of their share?

i love Hang Zone but they went way up. hope it stays there.

Because the PPM sample set is so small, a station with a smaller (and/or growing) audience seems bigger fluctuations month to month.  Still, that dropoff was surprising.

The Freak *really* needs to mix in more sports if they want to be competitive.  I love the personalities on the Downbeat, but I need more consistency and less randomness to be a more regular listener.  The morning show is a tuneout for me, too.
