Dewd.  Two VERY nice 10's!!!  I'd have a case of the happy-pants after pulling that card!

One with height, and the width on the other.  Where is this at?  And are the cows yours or a neighbor?  Just throw up some panels as stated.  With all this rain, easy to get t-posts in the ground.  Make it round to help keep out pigs.

Thanks, I think they are both 6+ years old, so definitely potential takers for this year. This is west of Lampasas. The cows are in our south pasture, but the calves have found a gap in the fence, I'll have to go fix it.

  2. October is a great time to eliminate some swine.  Addresses the itch to get in the woods, sit in the  stand, watch / scout some deer....and spill some (pig) blood.  Win-win-win!

This idea has merit. I need to take some time and get my food plots planted around the first of October as well.
  3. The pigs have come back a few times, looks like our setups are making it on their rotation. I’m looking forward to pulling cards this weekend and seeing how consistent they are. Hopefully our spring is flowing again and the tanks are full.

Sorta looking forward to sitting in the deer stand and enjoying time in the woods.

As soon as the first September cool front comes though, I start getting the deer stand itch myself.

The family doesnt want to go to our ranch near junction this weekend. I have had three friends puss out because of rain forecast. I am going by myself for a weekend of relaxation. I cant wait. Fuck the rain. May pull a 16 hour hunt, dove then night hunt hogs then dove hunt the am. Freeeeeedom!

L I V I N! Just keep your phone handy or be careful; don't want to be like that guy that was upside down in a treestand harness for 24 hours.

  6. Their cultures are a lot older than ours is.  And they don't seem to be waking up to conservation.

They have been living in isolated countries and have just started getting out and seeing the world the last two decades, and are just starting to travel to nature destinations in numbers the last few years. Once people see the finite nature of the world, conservation usually takes better hold. As the world communities continue to bash Asian black markets for animal products, and more Chinese get out, I think things will improve.

What the fuck is wrong with Asians and how they treat the natural world around them?  They singlehandedly keep the ivory trade going as well as poaching of tigers, rhinos, sea turtles, etc. because of supposed medicinal benefits of ingesting these things.  A Mexican dolphin is about to go extinct because the Chinese will pay $10,000 for the swim bladder of a fish that lives in the same area as the dolphin, so poachers use gill nets and kill dolphins.  The Japanese would pull every last bluefin tuna out of the oceans if they could.  I don't get it.  It's like conservation is a foreign concept to them.

Purportedly, more people believe in Traditional Chinese Medicine than believe in The Bible. Cultures evolve over time, I'm optimistic that things will get better. A hundred years ago, we were in a similar place:

"Here in the United States we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests, and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals -- not to speak of vulgarizing charming landscapes with hideous advertisements. But at last it looks as if our people were awakening." -Theodore Roosevelt

We need to replace our kitchen faucet set and can't find a direct replacement.  We have a girl who is an interior designer/decorator that's worked on the house before,  so I told my wife to get her to look at it and come up with a replacement that would look appropriate and fit in the space.  (My fucking fault here)

I came home last week to the same faucet........and 4 pages of sketches converting our bedroom/bath and an adjacent guest room/bath into one master suite with sitting room, shoe closet, makeup counter...all that bullshit.

All I wanted was a glass of water from the faucet.

  9. I have a Winchester 62. It is by far my favorite gun. Just the thought I am handling that old of a gun makes me happy. The thing shoots great and is just a joy to shoot.

    Mine’s a Winchester 61, serial puts it at 1950:

I regret even more not buying every gun I could pre-marriage.  I had the scratch.  Just never got around to it... Guys.  Load up before.  Easier.  Trust me....

I'm in the same boat and did basically the same thing, but instead of buying stupid crap, my wife is a mizer/money hoarder. The first 10 years of marriage I didn't buy many guns or hunt much because I wanted to pay off all debt, and she was cool with that. After we'd accomplished that, I started spending money on guns and hunting, and about 10 years later, she still isn't really on board with it. Of course, now I realize I should have made hunting/shooting/gun buying a deal maker/breaker from the beginning.

That's a God D**m beautiful sight right there.  Something righteous about a 1911 with a can.

    Those heavier barrels on your two bolt-guns (L to R:  2 & 4):  aftermarket?

*I need more guns...but with a new pool going in, and two kids playing Classic League Soccer and all the dues & travel costs they charge.....rocking the old dogs for now.

Second from left is a custom 375 Wby with a heavy Douglas barrel; gun on far right is a stock Rem 700 BDL .223 with heavy varmint barrel.

Yeah, I didn't really start buying guns until I had family financial stuff pretty well addressed, but I like buying used classic guns that are depreciated out and actually appreciate at or above the level of inflation, so its really a conservative investment. My wife's eyes usually glaze over an she stops interrogating me about gun stuff when I start talking investment strategy.

  13. ...Last year we saw them right up till opening and then they were essentially gone till late in the year. It was odd...

We had the same experience in Lampasas last year. I theorize the barometric pressure changes, etc associated with Harvey moved the birds North for awhile and the then they migrated later.

Getting in 2 dove hunts this weekend outside SA. 7th annual trip with dad and brother.

Should be fun if I don't die of heat stroke. High chance I'll be hunting in shorts and a fishing shirt.

Nice!  I always think its going to suck sitting out in the blazing heat, but if I bring a bucket of ice cold drinks to my spot its never as bad as I think.

We’ve been feeding cotton seed the last few years. Takes some getting used to and then the deer are hooked. Cheaper than most other protein and it’ll help grow some monsters. Takes about 3 years.

I've been going back and forth on whether to feed cotton seed at our place, but to be honest, I've just reached my limit of shit I want to mess with. Maybe when we get done with the major improvements (cedar clearing, fence building, house renovations, tank building, road work, etc.) I'll have time for it.

  16. Interesting that his G2's have progressively gotten smaller since 2016, but the G4's seem to be growing.  Are my eyes deceiving me, or based on his left ear, he has gained another 1/2-1" in inside spread? (think it might be the picture angle).

Between the two, I'm more a fan of the tall rack with strong / masculine G2 / G3's.  That is prettier than width (if I had to chose between the two).  Both are good looking bucks!

I think he might have gained a little spread since 2017 and added some mass all over. His G2s started leaning further back over time so they look shorter. Here’s side views from last year and this year:

  17. If he's that old, then his days are numbered.  Especially withe the younger generations seemingly doing so well.  I'm going out this weekend to scare doves and pull cards.  Feeders should be about half full.  My hunters are busy and they've been putting cameras everywhere so we're all anxious to see what they year's crop looks like.
    Love those wide beams.

Here’s a progression of the wide 10. I think he was already 3 or 4 in 2016. I’m a little surprised he hasn’t added any points or more tine length over the last two years, he is pretty regular at the protein feeder.

  18. That is a great, great group of bachelors! You have a good ten in there, bottom deer pic, far left (08-13-2018 08: 09:10).  He's in the middle pic as well.  Wide beams.  Looks about 3-3.5, maybe?  Look at his neck.  Do you have a lot of pressure from neighboring hunters?

Thanks! That wide 10 point is older, probably 5-6. He’s probably peaked out, but we have a nice little strain of wide rack genetics that I’ve been hesitant to hinder. Here he is in 2016:

    50091e122961b14971152ab48480a983.jpg

2016 again with his nose in the feeder:

    Here he is in 2017:

    44ad179f3753704849d7fe861547bca7.jpg

He ended up breaking off both brow tines last year before rifle season, which probably saved his hide.

We have hunting pressure on about 50% of our perimeter. I really can’t ask for much more, because as you see, legal bucks are surviving. The other ranches don’t feed as well or provide as good of pasture conditions as we do, so we tend to hold deer pretty well on our place during feeding times.
