Rumor on volleytalk from someone who has a track record of posting some inside information that Stein Metzger, the only coach at UCLA for their 11 year history, will be the beach volleyball coach at Texas.

In terms of beach volleyball hires, that wouldn't just be a home run. That's hitting the ball to Dripping Springs.

Of course, women's athletics will be quite the sausage fest among the head coaches, but I want to win.

Any thoughts on the EC Rye?

Same mashbill as bonded Rittenhouse and 110pf Pikesville.   I’ll wait till ECBPRye hits the shelves.

  3. Here’s some industry news that will make the rounds this morning.  Al Young, longtime brand Ambassador for Four Roses, passed on Christmas Day.  I’ve had the pleasure of dining with Al and picking barrels with him.  A great man and a great bourbon historian.  RIP Al 🥃

  4. True story.  This past weekend at TW Brodie, Buffalo Trace drop was tipped off by someone in distribution.  Over a hundred folks line-up at opening.  Big surly guy cuts the front of the line.  Words were exchanged and tough guy brandishes some brass knuckles.  Sunset Valley PD arrive in full-force to haul surly guy away.  All the hoopla for a storepick BT and a few Blanton’s.  Go figure.

Anyone tried the Kentucky Owl batch 3 rye? I loved batch 1 and kind of liked batch 2, although the price was ridiculous. The batch 3 I've seen was retailing at $190. One positive is that they've increased the proof up to 114.

I’ve heard it’s good but I haven’t tasted for myself.  Price needs to drop $50.

  6. Not all store picks are created equal.  An account may get an occasional gem picking samples out of a briefcase, but the good bottles come from those accounts who have long-standing relationships with the distiller/distillery and actually travel and pick out of these rickhouses.  I do hope you’ve found yourself a good bottle to drink.

  7. Twin Liquor Dollar Day went well today.  I got to load & reload on a few goodies:  Ardbeg Drum, Balvenie Tun 1509, OF 1920, Pikesville, Foursquare Empress, Compass Box Flaming Heart, Four Roses, and W12.

Has anyone tried the Buffalo Trace OFC 25yr? $400 for a 2oz pour but bartender claimed it was really awesome. Had some of the WLW instead.

I have a bottle of the ‘93 and it’s much better than the ‘89 I tried side-by-side.  I’ve also had the ‘83 and that was one extraordinary pour.  The ‘93 has some cherry on the nose with cocoa, vanilla and heavy caramel on the tongue.  Nice long sweet tobacco finish.  Good stuff and worth trying.

What style of rum makes the best classic daiquiri?

For the classic Hemingway,  Floridita uses 3yr Havana Club.  There is nothing special about this one.

I’ve tried Probitas.  It’s a blend of whites by Foursquare and Hampden and it’s delicious.

For something interesting, try Paranubes from Oaxaca.  It has grassy qualities like a good agricole/cachaca with ripe apricot.  It’s what all the hip tiki bars are pouring.

I have never even come close to finding anything remotely decent at Applejack in Wheat Ridge. Is there a secret handshake I don’t know about?? Argonaut on the other hand is money. Always more store picks than you can shake a stick at, and I’ve found some very hard to find bottles there as well.

Applejack is huge and has a great selection for most things. But bourbon is tough to come by everywhere. Haven't been to Argonaut in a long time.

My personal ranking:  Davidson’s, Argonaut and lastly Applejacks.  It’s hard to find any rare bourbon in Denver as it’s a whiskey town.  Years ago, I found a 2016 SAOS rye sitting on the bottom shelf at Applejacks.   I was also able to grab Argonaut’s SAOS bourbon store pick before they stop releasing them.  As far as store picks, Davidson’s has the best inventory on hand.

I’ll probably buy it, but another missed opportunity for Heaven Hill to do something special and instead opting for meh.

Where were you when HH was releasing McKenna single barrels back in 2012-2014?

I'm not sure what Heaven Hill could have done differently with the Elijah Craig Store Pick program. I would have released it at 100 proof, but Heaven Hill stuck with 94 proof. I guess they figured if the the proof were any higher they'd be drifting into EC Barrel Proof territory.

If the EC Store Picks were 100 proof they'd be flying off the shelves.

Well if you haven’t heard, HH will be releasing barrel picks of their 92pf wheater Larceny.  Expect to see them released around bourbon season.

Another Turkey question, regarding Kentucky Spirit, what year did they remove "Distilled in Kentucky by the Austin Nichols Company"?

Kentucky Spirit launched in 1994 with the pewter caps.  The caps changed to a smooth dark wood in 2002.  In 2005, the dark wood top was stamped with a turkey.  In 2008, the top changed to a light wood with a turkey stamp.  After researching, it looks like they removed the “distilled in Ky” when they switched to the dark brown caps.

Does anyone have any stories on counterfeit bourbon?  I have to believe it's rampant.  At GG a couple of days ago the sales guy said they can't keep the regular Weller on the shelf.  He said a few days ago one guy came in and bought their entire inventory of regular Weller.  How hard is it to re-seal bottles of W12 or other hard to find brands?

Not sure you can assume that buying out inventory of WSR means someone is refilling W12 empties?  I’ve seen out-of-towners come into Tx to buy inventory to resell in their home states/countries.  I witnessed some Japanese store-owners wipe out high end Suntory & Nikki products to haul back to the motherland.
