    Such as?

Last time I stopped by Nasa,24fiauv.jpg I picked up these goodies.  I know it’s a bourbon board, but if you haven’t tried Caroni rum, you’re missing out.

    My new purchases.

Congrats.  The Pikesville is one of the better, if not the best valued rye release in the past decade.  I enjoy shopping Nasa as it’s one helluva liquor store with one of the best selections in Texas.  The proprietor waved me off of his Nasa full proof pick.  There were much more interesting bottles on the shelves to be had.

What kind of glass do you use to drink your hooch?

I picked up two Glencairn "official Canadian whiskey" glasses today. I typically use the original Glencairn whiskey glass.

Does anybody like the Canadian glass better?

I prefer to nose and sip out of the Canadian.  It swirls mo betta.

Same on my RY10.  Hoping it evens out with some age in the open bottle.  Still good - but not living up to expectations.

I think this Luxco RY10 bottling is a solid pour but to put it into perspective, it doesn’t measure up to the original bottlings from SW.  To the right of Luxco is a ‘90 bottling cut to 80pf. The good juice lies in the ‘69 decanter (now empty) and the ‘70 bottling on the right.  Old Stitzel juice is truly enjoyable stuff.akiu76.jpg

Question for you about this, @PappyVanVinceYoung. I know what I'm doing with Bourbon and I own some good stuff, but I don't consider myself a collector. I basically have three rules: 1) I get what I get based on luck and good relationships, 2) I only pay MSRP, and 3) I judiciously open what I buy, mostly rendering it valueless fro sale, but also enabling me to share out samples. I like drinking and sharing good whiskey with friends, and I'm less focused on accumulating it, although I see the appeal. That's where I'm coming from in this thing.

So my question to you is, what do you drink and what don't you drink, and how do you decide?

I”ll chime in.  I do consider myself a collector of brown spirits and have a few similar rules as well:  1.  I have what I have due to time spent building relationships on the retail and on-premise side of things;  2.  I will never pay secondary pricing for a bottle at retail or purchase from the secondary market;  3.  If the opportunity presents itself, I will purchase two bottles, one to open now and one to open later;  4.  All bottles will be opened, shared among friends or gifted at some point;  5.  I have recently started trading bottles with bourbon friends to fill holes in the collection.

As far as what to open and when?  Everything will be opened at one point, it depends on the company and the occasion.  I’ll open the latest release of Old Fitz with friends but will share the Stitzel juice with the more seasoned drinker.

There are lots of folks new to the whiskey game and I find that most chase labels and some will horde bottles to flip. I get that most see these allocated or hard-to-get bottles as currency, but these guys that flip bottles for profit are no friends of mine.

I went ahead and picked up the rhetoric 23.
Haven’t decided if I’m gonna drink it or do a trade for a couple of other bottles down the road.
Doing everything I can to keep me first and foremost in the mind of the manager at Goody Goody. Got a birthday bourbon from him last year and tonight he told me I’d be pretty much guaranteed one this year and something from this years BTAC collection.
It’s all about building a relationship with someone. Can’t ever stress that enough.

Never considered any diageo orphan bottles as trade bait.  Good luck on that one and props to you if you are able to trade it.

that was my guess. a dispute or disagreement of some kind

Closed after a year in?  I would hate to be the one who guaranteed that lease with 9yrs left.  If Speers is not on the hook for it, I surmise there will be some litigation from the ex-partners.

Anyone know of anyplace in Austin with a bottle of O.K.I. Reserve?

OKI by New Riff Distillery has not set up distribution in Texas as of now but has an application in.  There are no bottles on the shelves and doubt their sourced OKI juice will ever make it down.  There are, however, lots of guys in the Austin bourbon community with bottles that have muled ‘em back from Ky.  It’s no different than drinking single barrel MGP versions of SAOS, Belle Meade, or Boone County.

    $110?  Better be good

I’ve slowed my roll on Woodford’s Master Collection since it’s gotten over the $100 mark.  Non-age stated juice for a Benjamin?  Give me their OF 1920 for $60 all-day err-day.

I agree with everyone’s take on 1792 FP store picks...the best value for a high proofer and consistently good!  For those exes in SA, check out Alamo City Liquor’s Barrel pick...the best one I’ve tasted so far.

Does anybody know what Michter's sells at the distillery? I assume the Single Barrel is so rare it's not for sale there.

By the way Billions fans, Axe and John Malkovich were drinking the Single Barrel in the last episode. It was definitely Michter's with a brown/black label.

FYI, Michter’s Distillery doesn’t have a gift shop.  I was able to tour the grounds last year and was underwhelmed with the facilities compared to the others that you find on the trail.  I did see a pallet of the 25yr bourbon in the warehouse before being shipped out.

PSA: Heaven Hill’s new fancied up version Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond should be hitting the shelves in the next few weeks.

Be on the look out, it’s got the potential to be special- it is to Larceny what Lot B is to Weller.

I tried the Old Fitz BiB last week at the Brown in Louisville.  I was as disappointed in this release as much as Jefferson’s 16yr twin oak.  This bourbon is woodsy, very little fruit with a short finish.  I’m a big HH fan and was expecting a product comparable to their Pikesville release.  This is not it.  For the $100 pricetag, I would grab one for the collection but would not recommend paying secondary for it.  It’s a pretty bottle tho.  Spend your cash on ECBP.  34pdncp.jpg

Longbranch is pretty boring. Thin and not much flavor.  Give me WT 101.

It’s a starter bourbon for the noobs and the womenz.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see it replace the 81proofer.

Looks like you drank only 2 of the 4 grains. Those are some shitty looking glasses.

Looking for some info on these two bottles I received as a gift a few years back. Haven’t found much of anything doing an internet search.c44b66745694408dc4cb91d4c85b2b8c.jpg3cba438f46a24464de6f0c904f4effc9.jpg3c4f627b91a70b6b11c4211041a0d857.jpg0b547c384789814587281ac993f2902a.jpg

how is the squat BMH? i have a bottle but not yet opened

Drain pours on both the bourbon and rye expressions.   Black Maple Hills is not what is used to be.

Had the moonshine Russell’s reserve pick. Good stuff.

I hear they have a Belle Meade 11yr Barrel Pick that is outrageously good.  They do a good job picking barrels.

  17. I’m partial to this new place in Lamar Union called TLC.  They do a good job with seafood boils, sandwiches and raw bar.  Family friendly and great value but parking sucks.  Another favorite of mine is the seafood bar at Whole Foods HQ.  You can order oysters by the each at the seafood counter and they will serve it to you at the table.  Helluva lot cheaper than Perlas or Clark’s.
