Any Turkey experts on here? I need a ruling on a “dusty”. I bought a bottle of Wild Turkey 80 with Austin Nichols on the label for $30. Based on my online research, Campari removed Austin Nichols from the label in 2011, so I know it’s at least that old. It looks my bottle’s label was printed prior to 2011. It jives with the cashier’s story that the bottle was in storage for 10 years.

I don’t expect much, but it’d be nice to get a unique, good bottle at that price point.

What color is your label?  Brown or cream? Brown label with a straight facing turkey predates 1992 and is considered a “true” dusty.  This is Jimmy’s juice from the late 50’s thru the glut.  The 8yr 101pf bottles during this timeframe often contained bourbon much older than the age statement....that’s why they’re so damn good.

Too bad the store didn’t have the 8yr 101pf.  It’s a good price for $30, but you’re still drinking Turkey on training wheels

  2. Here’s a list of my current daily sippers:

Neisson Reserve Speciale Agricole (Martinique) 84pr

Blackadder’s Guyana Diamond 15yr 97.2pf from Port Morant Still

    Duncan Taylor’s Caroni 16yr (Trinidad) 110.2pf

    Duncan Taylor’s Monymusk 10yr (Jamaica)  109.2pf

    Velier’s Worthy Park 10yr (Jamaican) 118pf

    Foursquare Empery 14yr (Barbados) 112pf

Real McCoy LE 12yr (Barbados) 92pf

The real standout is Monymusk.  Overly ripe banana and jackfruit with a bit of petrol and asphalt.  It’s Jamaican funk at its best.

20 years ago, I would have agreed but other makers have caught and maybe even surpassed them.

Agreed.  I can’t understand why most rum houses still run bottles at 80 proof.  Single barrel/small batch, undosed, cask strength bottlings is what the rum nerds crave these days. Velier and other indy bottlers are the only ones bringing good stuff to market.

Tried a cocktail the other night made with Paranubes rum out of Oaxaca. Similar to rhum agricole in that it's made primarily from cane juice. I've read it described as somewhere in the spectrum between rhum agricole and cachaca, and I'm eager to get a bottle and try a simple daiquiri.

I like Paranubes in a daiquiri.  You should try Probitas too.  A white rum from Foursquare & Hampden blended by Richard  Seale.  Good stuff!

So I tried the Still Austin bourbon expecting it to be dog shit. It’s not. It’s actually (and I can’t believe I’m typing this about a new grain-to-glass Texas distilled and aged bourbon) not half bad.

They made a very good decision to not get cute and release it fairly young instead of aging for the sake of age. Their branding is terrible and the name of the Bourbon is stupid but otherwise extremely well executed for a new product. This is what Garrison Bros should have been.

I’ve got my eyes on these guys.

I’ve tried Still Austin.  I think for a small outfit, they’ve got the right team and finances to prosper.  Some background...the owner’s family started this small juice company called Sunkist.  The consultants on the team are Larry Ebersole (former Master Distiller at MGP) and Nancy “the Nose” Fraley.  The young distiller named John knows his shit and hails from NY.  Their mashbills mimic MGP’s for obvious reasons.  For a two year old bourbon, it’s young but tastes good, just needs a few more years in wood.  I’ve purchased a barrel with the 95/5 mashbill and will be aging it an additional year.  Can’t wait until it’s got another Tx summer in it.

What's a good bargain bourbon/rye that most of us haven't tried?

Ancient ancient age for the bourbon value win.  If you can find it.  I like Old Overholt bonded for the well rye if rittenhouse isn’t available.  OF rye is also an affordable well option.

So hit or miss. I won't try it again until I see a store pick. I need some semblance of a guarantee.

Good luck finding one.  Heaven Hill stopped releasing McKenna barrels in 2015.  Twins picked a barrel in 2014 that was pure tits.

  9. Wifey and I were at the Cathedral around noon today.   We heard first responders speeding by our hotel around 7:15 this afternoon.  By 7:30, we could see the flames through the thick smoke.  So sad for the people of Paris and for the Church.  There were hundred thousand folks lining both banks shocked and distraught.  So sad :(

  10. While I was in Louisville a few weeks ago picking barrels, I spoke to the good folks at Old Forester.  For those that appreciate the new rye release, expect to see a higher proof & older version in the pipeline.  It’s a bottling that will match what Heaven Hill did with Rittenhouse and the highly charged Pikesville offering.  I can’t wait for this one ☝🏾.

Any Austin people know somewhere that has this in stock? I was a little late on it and checked a few places like 5 days after it came out, but they were all out.

As of Tuesday, Specs Brodie & Arborwalk had OFR on the shelves.  Twins had it weeks ago.  Lookout for Twins Dollar Day coming up Feb 28th - Mar 2nd.

How plentiful will it be?  1910 level?

I don’t have current numbers but seeing that the rye is not part of the whiskey row series, the affordability of it and it being the newest mash bill in 150yrs, I surmise that it will be a permanent fixture in the BF portfolio.  I look forward to tasting it against Rittenhouse, Sazerac and Turkey.

Has Bookers 30 hit Texas yet? Most of the release articles are from December 2018. I figure with the lag time, it might be available.

This Booker’s release came and went 3 weeks ago.

  14. Booker’s is my go-to when I’m not drinking old turkey.

Of the small batch releases, I like “center-cut” 2015-03  and “off your rocker” 2016-05.  There are also some good round table selections pre-2015.

Of the special releases, I wasn’t too impressed with the 30th although it was freshly opened when I sipped it.  I’ll revisit it in 2 weeks.  The 25yr anniversary  2014-01 is a stellar bottle with a bit older juice in the blend.  Another good release in 2014 is an export from Japan and it’s called Fred’s Select, a private small batch made for a large grocery store Seijo Ishi.  This is good juice if you can find a bottle.  The 10yr anniversary bottling I haven’t opened yet but saving it when Fred or Freddie comes to town.

The true unicorn of the bunch goes to the brown wax Booker’s.  I have a ‘82 and it is by far, the best tasting Booker’s in my stash.

I grabbed it for $70, figured wth.
It’s signed by Bruce Russell, Jimmy’s grandson who is a distiller at WT now.

Decades is a nice release by Jimmy and Eddie, who both have a combined 95 years of distilling experience.  Bruce, on the other hand, has been traveling the country as a WT ambassador for the past few years and had been stationed in Austin.  He’s back in Lexington now and is being shackled to the distillery to start learning the ropes.  Give the guy another 10-15yrs before calling him a distiller.
