What the fuck is going on with the re-striping of roads, where the center lines are now jutting left and right for no apparent reason?  I'm specifically talking about North Loop and Bull Creek Road, for those who live in the area.  Why now do we have a short veer to the right every so often on these roads?

City of Austin is adding sidewalks on both sides of the street and adding dedicated bicycle lanes to Bull Creek Road between 45th and North Loop.  Street parking will be removed on one side of the street to make room.  Homeowners will also be giving up some of their front yards adjacent to the street.  The work is being funded by the 2016 Mobility Bond that was approved by voters.  Mobility will be improved for walkers and cyclists. Construction has started.

My guess is that the roads were temporarily re-striped to give construction crews some elbow room to work.

Unsure why the center lines are jutting out like that - maybe as a "traffic calming" scheme during construction?

Hollywood has swung and missed on some future predictions: Skynet becoming self aware in Aug 1997. Marty McFly traveling to the future of 2021. Now July 31st 2022 is the date that George Jetson is supposed to be born. I guess we won’t know if the Jetson world comes to pass off another 40 years.

Also, Soylent Green takes place in 2022.   Glad we missed that one.

  3. I just renewed my 2022 season tickets. Couple of things:

+ Ticket prices have gone up.

+ Can't yet order tickets for the ou game.   Ticket office says have to wait until April to order them separately.

  4. Cell service worked on west side upper deck even during timeouts and commercials when everybody checks their phones.  It worked last year with 25% stadium attendance - but it wasn't reliable in previous years with a full stadium.

Some of the vendors couldn't get their credit card readers to work.  It was like watching a caveman trying to fly a plane.

I found it was hotter outside the stadium before the game than inside the stadium (west side upper deck).

Went into stadium early because I guessed the entrances would be backed due to the mobile tickets.  Very little wait at Gate 3 when we went in early.

Since we got into the stadium early, there were no beer lines inside.  Pregame beer lines outside stadium were long.

As we left and went down the escalators (west side upper deck), it seemed staff weren't metering the flow.   Got a little scary backed up on one of the landings.

The heat was conducive to mini sundresses and halter tops - which was nice.

I had some issues downloading the 2021 football tickets to my Android (Samsung S9) mobile wallet.  However, I was able to solve the problem.

    Steps to repro:

    1. I attended the football games in 2020, and used the old version of Google Pay for the 2020 football season with no issues.
    2. Recently, I upgraded to the new version of Google Pay (v134.1.2) on same Android phone I used during 2020 season.  At the same time, I deleted the old Google Pay version.
    3. I tried to transfer my 2021 tickets to my Android phone (with new GPay), but tickets would not show up in the new GPay.
    4. I deleted the new GPay, and re-installed the old GPay (v2.134.389763251).
    5. My football tickets/Champions Club passes suddenly appeared in the old GPay.

tldr;  I successfully used old GPay during 2020 football season.  The new GPay didn't work for loading 2021 tickets.  I had to downgrade to old GPay to access my 2021 tickets.

    Agree also.

UTA is working on it.  Think UTSA (and UTEP) is just too much of a local commuter option.  UTA has a good chance to qualify for the Texas National Research University Fund when they review in the Spring.  They made one year of qualifications this year.  They need to repeat.  UTD made it a couple years ago.  Houston and Tech made it several years ago.  UTSA & UTEP are a long ways away.  Texas St. and North Texas are eligible, but don't appear like they will ever make it.

    UTA recently achieved NRUF classification.

UTSA is expected to achieve NRUF classification in 2022.

UT-Arlington becomes latest emerging research university to reach “Texas Tier One” status

UT-Arlington is the fourth public university in the state to earn this distinction, out of eight schools aiming for the title, which allows the school to tap into an additional $6.2 million in funding.

by Kate McGee Aug. 19, 202112 PM Central

The University of Texas at Arlington has become the fourth university in the state to be considered a Texas Tier One university, a designation awarded to emerging research universities as part of the state’s effort to help them achieve national recognition as major research centers.

The designation will allow UT-Arlington to tap into an additional $6.2 million in state funding, a modest amount compared to the $125 million the university spent on research overall in 2020.

But university officials say the designation highlights the investment UT-Arlington is making in its research operations, which range from studies in aviation technology and Texas’ transportation infrastructure to natural disaster planning and health disparities.

“This is a game changer for UTA that has been nearly 12 years in the making,” said Teik C. Lim, interim president of UT-Arlington, in a press release. “Texas Tier One designation is a public invitation to take a fresh look at UTA’s academic and research excellence and the impact this special University is making on the region, the state of Texas and beyond.”

It also means Texas is making progress in state leaders’ goal of increasing the number of “tier one” universities in the state.

Universities reach this status under Texas’ National Research University Fund when they spend more than $45 million on restricted research two years in a row and meet four of six optional requirements two years in a row, including awarding more than 200 doctorates every year and enrolling a “freshman class with high academic achievement.”

UT-Arlington joins Texas Tech University and the University of Houston, which qualified in 2012, and the University of Texas at Dallas, which qualified in 2018.

The Texas Legislature created the NRUF in 2009 to help funnel research dollars toward eight emerging research schools since that type of funding is often provided to flagship universities, like the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.

According to a March report by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the University of Texas at San Antonio is the next closest to reaching this designation, and could be officially approved as early as 2022. In 2020, it met three of the four required criteria and spent $56 million on research.

The University of Texas at El Paso spent more than $45 million on research in 2019 and 2020, but met just one of the other four necessary criteria to qualify. It does not have the potential to reach those criteria in 2021. Texas State University and the University of North Texas did not meet the research spending threshold in 2020, and neither are on track to reach it in 2021 either, the report stated.

In an email to the UT-Arlington campus community, Lim said that achieving the Texas Tier One status was one of his four goals during his tenure as interim president. He took the helm after the previous president, Vistasp Karbhari, stepped down last March after the university system began investigating potential wrongdoing in recruiting and enrollment practices at the university. The UT System recently announced it’s resuming a search for a new permanent president after pausing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UT-Arlington, Texas Tech, the University of North Texas and UT-Dallas were designated as Carnegie Tier One universities in 2016, when the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education listed the universities among 115 schools nationwide ranked highest for research activity.

UT-Austin, Texas A&M, Rice University, UT-El Paso and the University of Houston are also considered Carnegie Tier One universities.

UPDATE: U.S. Central Command statement on defensive strike in Kabul

By U.S. Central Command Public Affairs U.S. Central Command Communication Integration

    TAMPA, Fla.  –

We are aware of reports of civilian casualties following our strike on a vehicle in Kabul today.

We are still assessing the results of this strike, which we know disrupted an imminent ISIS-K threat to the airport. We know that there were substantial and powerful subsequent explosions resulting from the destruction of the vehicle, indicating a large amount of explosive material inside that may have caused additional casualties. It is unclear what may have happened, and we are investigating further.

We would be deeply saddened by any potential loss of innocent life.

    - Capt. Bill Urban, USN, U.S. Central Command Spokesman
