I have a friend who owns a small chain of super high-end retail shops which operate in some of the largest markets in the world.

He has been planning to open his first Texas location in downtown Austin next year but he called me Tuesday and told me he saw a piece on the news about our lovely city’s new ordinance (he lives thousands of miles away, btw) and was now debating whether or not Austin is the right next move for his company.

I'm not sure the ordinance itself will have any impact but if the police and DA quit enforcing petty theft, that will have an impact.  IMO, the failure to enforce petty theft (whether by informal or formal policy or competing priorities) has been a big contributor to the issues in Seattle.

Their cities of origin should; however, face hefty fines for intentionally relocating their problems to other cities via bus tickets or rides from local law enforcement.

Yeah, I disagree with that practice, absent certain circumstances (e.g., family support is in city X and willing to help so city Y buses person to city X).

Most of the homeless people from Beaumont or Del Rio and elsewhere end up in Austin, Houston, etc. because those cities offer services that they don’t get elsewhere.  Alpine or Longview aren’t dropping a shitload of money on shelters.

People move.  Their cities of origin aren't responsible for their upkeep in a new place.

  4. I chuckle when the ultra-rich cities (and I live in Seattle) claim that it's not a local issue and they need state or federal money.  Yes, folks in Fresno should be taxed and their money sent to SF to address SF's homeless problem.  Maybe Texas can tax taxpayers in Del Rio or Beaumont and send that money to Austin.  The ultra-rich cities have ultra-rich people.  Tax them if you need money.

  5. Vandy is still the favorite in Vegas to win the series. It’s a slight edge, but Vegas gives Vandy a better chance to win 2, than Michigan to win 1.

  6. It will be interesting to see how Michigan manages their staff going forward.  I assume Criswell starts tomorrow but when he's pulled, it will be all guys that haven't thrown in Omaha the rest of the way (unless Kauffman is able to come back for some work on Wednesday).

As I've been saying, Michigan looks destined.

If this goes to three, though, I'm betting on Vandy.  And with Rocker pitching tomorrow that's a good bet.

    Great bunt.

I'm telling you, God decided weeks ago Blue was winning this thing.

  8. If Michigan is going to win the series, they're going to have to pitch someone that hasn't pitched yet.  Kauffman has already gone twice.  Henry is likely done after today.  Criswell likely has some innings in him, but they'll need to find a couple other guys (at least).

  9. Assuming Vandy hangs on, they've got to be the heavy favorite.  Mich may have substantially similar (perhaps even slightly better) starting pitching, but Vandy has a large offensive advantage compared to Michigan.

  10. That's one reason I don't like big conferences.  Years can go by without playing certain teams, particularly in SEC football where you have 8 conf games and a permanent opponent from the other division.
