Usually if you're at altitude, they don't really go around them much.  There's a good breeze up there but nothing unusual.  I've flown above hurricanes a bunch.  Generally as long as you stay away from the eye area, where big thunderstorms can reach higher than the average 35,000-40,000 feet where commercial airlines cruise, there is really no difference between flying above a hurricane and any other storm.  Most of the turbluence of a hurricane is thrust downward towards the surface.  Yes there is air that filters up and out from a hurricane, but for the most part that air is stable and not all that fast once it gets above the worst of a hurricane (about 20,000 feet).  Sometimes there is turbulence above a hurricane, but again, most of it is below the average cruising altitude of a hurricane.  I actually flew through and above Harvey last year (when it was downgraded, but still a strong storm), and it wasn't any different than flying through a rainstorm.  Of course this was away from the center of circulation, which was still pretty potent - don't want to fly through that. Here's a shot I took:

In the eye area, however, it can get pretty nasty - not necessarily enough to cause a plane to crash (remember that hurricane hunters have been flying through the worst of hurricanes for over 70 years and have never lost a plane!) but enough to scare the shit out of you with this or that jolt.  However, again, other than actually having to land in or near the eye, hurricanes aren't particularly a problem for flying over.

Cool, crashing is fine. I just don't want to be stuck on a plane for 6 hours.

  2. I am supposed to fly into Fort Lauderdale tomorrow around 1p. FLL largely won't be affected, but I assume that we will just fly way the fuck around it? First time flying over or around a major hurricane, so not sure how this works.

Any updates on the development in the gulf? (i.e., is it going to be pouring rain at DKR Sat night)?

Satellite images and surface observations indicate that a broad
area of low pressure has formed in the central Gulf of Mexico.
Although the shower activity is still disorganized, upper-level
winds are forecast to become more conducive for development, and
it is likely that a tropical depression will form on Thursday,
before the system reaches the western Gulf coast. Another
reconnaissance plane is scheduled to investigate the disturbance
tomorrow. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds
are expected across portions of northeastern Mexico, Texas, and
Louisiana late this week, and interests there should monitor the
progress of this system, and refer to products from their local
    weather office.
    * Formation chance through 48 hours...high...70 percent.

It does tie the room together.

I just wonder why Rocky Allen is selling his framed shirt because who else would have framed it?

He was a close personal friend and he has been deceased for many years. Died at young age in a car accident. My parents decided to frame the jersey to honor him. I just don't have a place for it and thought someone might want it.

  5. We just bought a new house and so I'd like to begin the process of converting it to a smart home. The issue I am having is that there are so many options out there and doesn't seem to be a clear front runner in # of products or innovation.

We have an Echo and Alexa, so part of me wants to just go with products that she can control. We are also highly invested in Sonos and right now Google doesn't have the integration.

    So what is everyone using?

Thanks.  Belmond is probably top of the list.  Decent rate with Sapphire points.

It seems like there are only a couple hotels in that area (Belmond and Hacienda de las Flores).  Is that the part of town you definitely want to be in?

It was a good spot. because it was in the middle of it all. Rosewood is really nice and bigger, but is also further removed. Could walk to everything at the Belmond.
