  1. I was on a zoom with a coworker who lives close to the epicenter.  He said "Hold on" like something was wrong in his house, and I was thinking what the fuck is going on there, and a second later my whole house (about 50 miles away) started shaking.

Following with interest - after going on our first cruise last year; a 3 day test cruise to the Bahamas out of Canaveral - it was okay), we joined in with my wife's family to to a 10 day Alaska cruise this summer. Holland America - rooms look okay, but they will be small; we upgraded to a aft veranda at the suggestion of the SIL who is putting it all together. The excursions seem pretty blah (we've been whale watching before, it's all just touristy crap), dining reviews seem to be decent and we aren't expecting 5 star meals (really not even 4 star), not sure what we will do all day on the sailing days, but I here you get a decent view of the coastline, sea and winged creatures and some blocks of ice. I am not a big drinker, but I am willing to try it out if it helps pass the time.
I am afraid if this goes well it could become a regular thing, as both of our parents have passed and it is only things like this that we get together for bigger family gatherings. I think there are about 20 of on this boat, including some from our kids generation. Personally, I think I'd rather see more of the PNW and drive around, but I don't think you can really do that as easy with Alaska.
Tips for an Alaska cruise are appreaciated - our group age range is 28-74, with most in their 50's-60's. Should I just spice it up by putting the upside down pineapple magnets on each of the groups door?

Whale watching in Juneau was phenomenal. I'd been on other whale watching trips in Maine and New Zealand, and they didn't hold a candle to Juneau.  We saw dozens of whales, really close up.

I don't have any real recommendations for other excursions.  I did a canoe trip in Ketchikan (or Skagway? it's all run together in my mind), and a hike in the other of the two, and scenery was spectacular.  But it was an overly packaged, you're in a giant canoe with 20 other people for 15 minutes, or you're hiking 2 miles at low elevation and not seeing much.  I just wanted to stay and rent a car and really see things.  All the excursions felt frustrating, other than the whale watching, which I wasn't gung ho on doing beforehand, but  got talked into and it turned out to be incredible.

Boeing BA0.73% advisedairlinestocheckthecockpitseatson787Dreamliner jets after a seat mishap likely pushed a pilot into the controls, causing a sudden, terrifying plunge on a flight to New Zealand this week.

A Latam Airlines flight attendant hit a switch on the pilot’s seat while serving a meal, leading a motorized feature to push the pilot into the controls and push down the plane’s nose, according to U.S. industry officials briefed on preliminary evidence from an investigation. The switch, on the back of the chair, is usually covered and isn’t supposed to be used when a pilot is in the seat.

Boeing issued a memo late Thursday to operators of 787 jets recommending that they inspect the cockpit chairs for loose covers on the switches and instructing them how to turn off power to the pilot seat motor if needed. Boeing said it is considering updates to flight crew manuals.

A switch on the back of 787 cockpit seats controls a motor that moves the seat forward or back. Boeing in 2017 provided airlines with instructions for maintaining the switches.

“Closing the spring-loaded seat back switch guard onto a loose/detached rocker switch cap can potentially jam the rocker switch, resulting in unintended seat movement,” according to the memo, which was viewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The memo says this was a known issue and that Boeing had issued a related service notice in 2017. The memo

doesn’t indicate whether a loose switch cover played a role in the incident on the Latam flight. The part is on roughly 375 planes, according to a person familiar with the situation.

    Scary really.

It is the latest in a series of failings involving Boeing aircraft in the past couple of days including the 737 engine that caught fire mid-flight on Monday and a wheel falling off shortly after takeoff in San Francisco on Thursday.

It’s not going to be long before we have fatalities. What company would build new planes? If this were a car company there would be hell to pay and lawsuits and recalls. This is a really terrifying situation. Something is going to get missed. Airlines are stretched thin. Insane schedules. Something really catastrophic is going to happen.

I'm not defending Boeing, which has real problems.  But I don't think any of these incidents have anything to do with Boeing.  Today's issue appears to be pilot error and a wet runway.  Boeing doesn't make the engines (Monday's engine fire).  And I doubt the wheel falling off was a Boeing problem in a plane that's been in service for years--that's probably a UA maintenance issue.

Bring lots of cash in hundreds as the ATMs were often out of cash or limited how much you could take out last time I visited. Plus you can exchange it for the blue rate which is much higher than what a bank or official money exchange will give you.

This.  You can also send USD to yourself using Western Union.  Don't use an ATM in Argentina.  You should also bring something to put all those pesos into.  I exchanged 100 USD there, and received a giant stack of pesos, I think 130,000 pesos or so.  Their largest bill in regular circulation is a 1000 peso note which is worth less than $1 (fluctuates constantly though).

Man…I’d spend more time in Finland. Finland is fucking cool.

This.  I went to Finnish Lapland a few years ago in early March, and maybe the best trip I've ever done.  Saw the northern lights multiple times, stayed in a glass igloo, dogsledding in untouched gorgeous wilderness, skiing, snowmobiling, Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, ice breaker boat, sauna

anybody have experience with Icelandair and/or airport? 🤔

i hate flying with a passion but we're planning a family trip to Germany and France late spring, first time, so no choice there. due to my general airline hate and tendency to have claustrophobic reactions on any flight longer than about 5 hours, i've been banking Chase points for a while to be able to splurge on business class. Icelandair keeps coming up with multiple options, Denver>Frankfurt.

i'm not a surly 1%er 😋 and our international travel has been limited to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean, so European travel is all new ground.

really...i just don't want to get served surstromming or be trapped with any other kind of fermented fish during food service 😝 😜

should i just stick with United? 🤔

I flew IcelandAir on a couple trips a few years ago, once connecting to Geneva, and the other time a trip to Iceland.  I think they only have 757's in their fleet, so the plane is a little small for such a long flight since you mention being claustrophobic, but I don't recall it being uncomfortable.  I was in coach so not sure what business is like, but in coach at least the only food was for sale.  I don't remember much about it, so it couldn't have been too bad.

KEF is a nice airport.  Although on the Geneva trip in summer had to walk outside in 40 degree weather to make the connection--was not dressed for that.

If Cox’s lawyer truly failed to ask the expert witness physician if his/her opinions were based in reasonable medical probability, that failure was both idiocy and malpractice.

Still, fuck Paxton and the Supremes.

I don't think that's the issue.  It's that the TX abortion ban only has a "medical exception" if the mother's life is in immediate danger.  There's no medical exception for risk of infertility, a fetus that can't survive, or anything else.

It would be better for all women in Texas if Kate Cox is arrested trying to leave.  She is who we need right now.  The State of Texas is a complete shithole at this point.  Anyone who can should get the hell out.  Leave it to the Fatty's and Iconos of the world.

It's not just abortion.  I can't imagine anyone wanting to be an OB/GYN in Texas right now.  Good luck to Texas hospital systems trying to lure OB residents into their programs.  In a few years, there will be an even bigger crisis.

  10. It looks like they had another target within the US but after being stopped at the border they intentionally blew up their vehicle rather than be searched/taken in for questioning.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/rainbow-bridge-us-canada-closed-explosion-sources/story?id=105102476&fbclid=IwAR2X0OBqIQroUyhj8VRFZv7IlqAHCeMX4T2B1dy1oIhf0U2MZ-AIvJFUSgo

The Niagara Falls mayor's office said the incident involved a vehicle crossing into the U.S. from Canada.

Surveillance video showed the vehicle stopped at an initial security checkpoint, according to sources briefed on the investigation. The vehicle was then directed to a secondary security checkpoint, and at that point the vehicle sped up and crashed into the secondary screening location, sources said.

Maryanne Trump Barry, the eldest sister of former President Trump, dies at 86

Maryanne Trump Barry, the eldest sister of former President Donald Trump, has died, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN. She was 86.

Barry, a former federal judge and prosecutor, was selected by President Ronald Reagan to serve on the Federal District Court in New Jersey in 1983. She was subsequently nominated by President Bill Clinton to the 3rd Court of Appeals in 1999 and retired in 2019.

Her retirement came amid an investigation into whether she violated judicial conduct rules by committing tax fraud following reporting from The New York Times that alleged the former president and his siblings utilized tax schemes to inflate their inheritances. A disclosure form from Barry’s Senate confirmation that presented a $1 million contribution from a Trump family-owned company reportedly played a vital – though inadvertent – role in uncovering the alleged fraud.

Because she retired, the investigation into Barry closed, leaving her entitled to an annual retirement salary and free from judicial rebuke. Her attorney denied the allegations.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

I met her once, at some Bar event, a number of years ago when Obama was president.  Someone at my table asked her about dotard's birther bullshit, and she just shook her head and said "Oh, that Donny."

A Philadelphia police officer was charged with murder after he fatally shot a 27-year-old man who was in his car at near point-blank range, prosecutors announced on Friday, weeks after top police officials announced that body camera footage of the killing showed a different account than what the officer initially described.

In addition to the first-degree murder charge, the officer, Mark Dial, was charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment of another person and official oppression in the shooting death of Eddie Irizarry, prosecutors said at a news conference on Friday.

Mr. Dial fatally shot Mr. Irizarry around noon on Aug. 14 after what the police initially said was a car chase ending in Mr. Irizarry lunging at them with a knife. But police officials said two days later that body camera footage showed that the man was still in his car when the officer shot him. The fatal shooting and changing account sparked community anger and protests.

In an unusual move, Judge Christian DiCicco of the Philadelphia Municipal Court set bail for Mr. Dial at $500,000. According to court records, a third party posted the requisite $50,000 deposit on Mr. Dial’s behalf, allowing him to be released.
