  1. There was an awesome Mr. Gatti's at Jones Maltsberger and Thousand Oaks. Went to countless birthday parties there.

Also another arcade called Larzland the next intersection over (Thousand Oaks and Henderson Pass).

There's still a good liquor store there called Alamo City Liquors which probably has the best selection in SA after Spec's.

  2. Gonna be in Austin next Sunday and it looks like it's supposed to rain. What BBQ place in Austin or the surrounding area would be the place to go to avoid rain?

Stayed at the JW resort this weekend. Always a good time for the kids

Did Soluna (its the sister restaurant to Rosarios, and much better), La Fonda on Main (we always try to go here once a trip), DarkSide Pizza (if you havent seen or heard of this one, look it up. Its insane. Best themed restaurant in Texas), Alamo Springs Cafe (did this before we saw the bats at Old Tunnel State Park. The Cover burger was awesome but everything else was trash), had breakfast at La Panaderia (this gonna be the next big restaurant to franchise outta SA, its awesome every time), and had lunch at Tycoon Flats (great greasy spoon).

We try to visit at least once a year and every time we talk about moving from Houston. SA is just a better city in most respects. Little to no traffic, no humidity (we sat outside when it was 91 degrees and it felt like 80 degrees in Houston), great tacos, laid back feel, best childrens museum in Texas, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, SeaWorld, Zoo, Riverwalk, Pearl, <30 min from Castroville, Seguin, NB, and 2.5 hrs from a pretty solid beach.

The only reason we havent moved already is because im fairly convinced CenTex is gonna run outta water by 2030

Soluna is the sister restaurant to El Mirasol not Rosario's. Rosario's and Acenar are owned by the same owner.

  4. Contestants have been great this year definitely a step up in talent than Wisconsin.

Challenges though have been very disappointing. Elimination challenges about the seasons and a pizza one. Really? Looks like they're completely skipping Montreal and the east coast which have great and interesting culinary traditions. Season should've been called Top Chef Toronto instead of Top Chef Canada.

    Horrible episode.

Horrible gimmick challenge. Horrible executions. Horrible elimination.

Challenge had absolutely nothing to do with food. It was so stupid.

Someone sent me this site. Anybody know anything about it. Some decent prices. Above mrsp, but some not too much.

They're legit. I've been there. In the Georgetown area of DC. They also run the website SharedPour. Some barrel groups like r/bourbon use them to ship. Have a lot of rare bottles but most are secondary prices or higher.

ETA: I've purchased from them before and had no issues. I just picked up at the store though so don't know how reliable their shipping operation is.

  7. Have you thought about NoVa? Seems like it check off all the boxes. Definitely big but not NY or LA and you're close to Dulles airport. They have outdoorsy stuff like Wolf Trap, Great Falls, and Scott's Run nearby. Plenty of stuff to do like DC, Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, go to the coast or Virginia wine country. Taxes aren't insane and politics are moderate/left-leaning. The winters have been pretty mild the past few years.

  8. Just watched the latest episode. Pretty pathetic that two of the contestants didn't even know they severely undercooked their proteins till judge's table. Like I understand time gets away from you and a contestant ends up serving undercooked protein due to time management issues but that's not what happened. How hard is it to taste your proteins before to make sure they're cooked? Usually around this time during the finals, the judges are nitpicking and figuring out which contestant's flavor combinations are slightly off to send one home. Not this season. This season they're debating which protein is slight more edible. Extremely pathetic. I'm actually going to Milwaukee in a few months and usually go out of my way to go to a Top Chef contestant's restaurant whenever I'm traveling. Not going to bother going to Dan's spot. I'll watch the last episode just curious to see how bad the chefs fuck up but this season has been pretty bad.

  9. Yeah I went to Weathered Souls last month and it was pretty terrible. One IPA on tap (their West Coast IPA), as well as a sour, a lager and then like 8 pastry stouts. Uh don't feel like drinking 16% ABV overly sweet stouts during the day in the middle of May.  They also ran out of about 75% of their food menu.

2100 Broadway. Just north of the Pearl.

Looks like RIP to Smoke Shack BBQ
