Jesus Christ, we face an existential crisis of overpopulation and abuse of natural resources and people still are fucking loony about birth control and abortion.

Maybe the outlook isn’t so grim; the world population seems to be headed for an adjustment:

    Quote

Earth will be home to 8.8 billion souls in 2100, two billion fewer than current UN projections, according to a major study published Wednesday...

China's [population] will fall from 1.4 billion people today to 730 million in 80 years.

These forecasts suggest good news for the environment, with less stress on food production systems and lower carbon emissions.

Will be interesting to see how they meet increased electricity demand given they are moving away from gas fired plants and have shuttered nuclear. Perhaps more frequent rolling blackouts

Maybe gas fired plants aren’t the devil after all. Link

California, which imposed rolling blackouts during an oppressive heat wave on two days last month, on Tuesday extended the lives of four aging natural gas plants it has been seeking to retire for a decade.

Whoever wins the Big 12 might need to be undefeated to make the playoff even without the Big 10 and Pac 12.   What a shitshow.   Thanks ISU and KSU.

This is why I made the comment elsewhere that Texas needs OU to do well this year, and then beat them twice. If OU loses one or two games (in addition to the Texas loses), then our sos will look worse than terrible. An undefeated Texas would get in but a one-loss Texas team—with our schedule—could get left out.

It’s not hard to image two SEC teams making the playoffs, along with Clemson. And if we give the playoff committee an excuse to bypass the Big 12, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that a one-loss ACC team would be chosen instead of a one-loss Big 12 team, especially if that  team was Notre Dame.

...why is that OU continues to be humiliated on the national stage against teams with comparable talent?  I'll help you. It's a complete lack of physicality.

While physicality is usually associated with defense, you can’t ignore the fact that an outstanding offense doesn’t just depend on great skill position play, it also depends on—more often than not—being physical and winning the line of scrimmage. And for several years, OU has done just that. Generally, their quarterbacks have time to throw; their running backs have holes; and their receivers have time to run routes.

Take the 2018 playoff game against Georgia, for example, who was ranked 6th in the nation in total defense, allowing an average of 168 yards passing and 126 yards rushing. OU gouged their defense for 289 yards passing and 242 yards rushing.  And you don’t do that without being physically dominant and controlling the line of scrimmage.

Now, you might have a point if you’re only referring to their defense. But even then, I think you are mistaken when you say “OU continues to be humiliated…against teams with comparable talent”.

Losing previously to Alabama by 11 points and Georgia by 6 points is disappointing (for Sooner fans), but not humiliating. And as far as the “comparable talent” comment, last year’s LSU team had 14 players drafted to OU’s 4.

So yes, LSU embarrassed OU last year. No, the talent wasn’t comparable.

Any major conference winner will make the Playoff given two of them are sitting out.

Sounds logical but I disagree; that is, unless the Big 12 winner is undefeated. The SEC will get two teams in because, well…SEC. Clemson will probably go undefeated and a one loss, ACC (for all practical purposes) runner-up Notre Dame team would be a tempting invite over a two loss or maybe even over a one loss Big 12 champ.

Odds they drop one to KState or Iowa State before the Cotton Bowl?

Hope that doesn’t happen.  OU is currently ranked 4th, and Texas needs for them to remain that high when they play. A win would then put Texas firmly in the top ten (probably 6th or 7th), and another win over a one-loss OU team in the conference championship game would get Texas in the top four.

A guy can dream, can't he?

If so, kudos to you for stepping back from the ledge of extreme hyperbole.

It’s almost like it’s a CR policy: when logic fails, resort to name-calling, down-voting, or both.

As far as I’m concerned, they can stop flooding the market or else they can deal with Iran by themselves.

Probably not. And if there is, it’s more than likely anecdotal evidence from her district, a district that is minority dominated and historically liberal. Those two facts alone eliminate racism as a motive.

  15. Haven’t seen this posted in this forum but LSU had 16 players at the combine, which is 4 more than UT, Aggy and OU combined. Obviously, Ed is a recruiting guru but that talent difference is ridiculous.

  16. On a lighter note—and before Romney’s vote is old news—I’d like to remind Surly that there was a prominent poster who, last year, said they would eat a MAGA hat if even one Republican voted to convict. I don’t remember who said that, so the would-be-hat-eater needs to fess up. With pictures, please.

Any guesses as to which party the uneducated poor folks support?

According to State Health Facts from KFF.org, there are approximately 18 million white people living in poverty, while the Hispanic and black total is 11 million and 8.6 million, respectively.

My guess (based on the last congressional voting statistics) is: 60% Republican for white, uneducated poor folk; 70% Democratic for Hispanic, uneducated poor folk; and 90% Democratic for blacks.

Neither party has a corner on the uneducated or poor market.

  19. Australian wildfires perpetrators identified. The kikes kites did this!

    Quote

In the first recorded instance of fire being used by animals other than humans, three Australian birds of prey species have been seen carrying burning twigs to set new blazes…Black kites (Milvus migrans), whistling kites (Haliastur sphenurus) and brown falcons (Falco berigora) all regularly congregate near the edges of bushfires, taking advantage of an exodus of small lizards, mammals, birds and insects – but it appears that some may have learnt not only to use fire to their advantage, but also to control it.

  20. Mohsen Rezaei, former chief of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards:

    Quote

Iran’s revenge against America for the assassination of Soleimani will be severe... Haifa and Israeli military centers will be included in the retaliation.

The Iranian people better hope that Rezaei doesn’t speak for their leadership. If Iran directly attacks Israel proper—including the deliberate targeting of a city—the Israeli response would be devastating to Iran, to say nothing of what we would do.

The Iranians are brazen, but not stupid…..right?

The authors say “we must stop” 80% of fossil fuel emissions by 2030 to avoid 1.5°C global warming, citing a previous study.

Is the 50 year, 100% renewables goal based on first stopping 80% of fossil fuel emissions in 10 years? If so, then we had better go to plan B, because neither the U.S. nor the rest of the world will come close to meeting the short-term goal.

  22. Thanks for The New Yorker article. The part that caught my attention was this:

    Quote

Suleimani seemed distressed by the loss of life. Before sending his men into battle, he would embrace each one and bid him goodbye; in speeches, he praised martyred soldiers and begged their forgiveness for not being martyred himself.

    He is now forgiven.

That article doesn’t discuss anything about the imminent danger trump poses to our democracy and his attempt to declare himself a dictator/king.

Nor does it discuss Trump’s imminent impeachment, or the length of Trump’s trousers, or anything else unrelated to Horowitz’s report. It’s an opinion piece narrowly focused on a report that claims the FBI—at least in this case—misled the FISA court.

As such, there should be no expectation from the ‘Surly-ledge crowd’ for the author to opine on anything other than the report.

    The Kurds, for one.

Europe and the NATO countries are on the brink.

We used the Kurds and they used us. If we need them again, they’ll be happy to enter yet another alliance with us, in exchange for funding and arms, of course.

As for our NATO relations, as long as Europeans depend on us as NATO’s enforcers, then sure, there is going to be a strain. And that strain goes all the way back to Eisenhower when he opposed providing a permanent stationing of troops in Europe because it would “discourage the necessary military strength Western European countries should provide themselves.”

Nearly every President since then has raised concerns about NATO’s overdependence on America, although none can touch Trump’s heavy-handed approach.

And now, there is a second, relatively new boiling point: trade. The E.U. enjoys a 100 billion dollar trade imbalance with the U.S., and it shows no signs of significantly improving.

Those two factors will someday undercut and perhaps cause us to sever some European alliances, but it won’t happen because of Trump and it certainly won’t happen while he is President.

BTW, Europe will never initiate ‘breaking up with the U.S.’—we’re their golden goose.
