Spizzirri won his first qualifying round match. He needs to win 2 more to make the big dance.

I watched the second and third set in-person. He had a ton of crowd support from  the Fairfield County crowd.

He clearly got nervous in the second set and gave it away,

In the 3rd set he was good, but with the amount of errors his opponent hit, it would’ve been pathetic if he’d lost.

I'm gonna be asking for restaurant recs in Manhattan/Brooklyn.  For starters, we need to know about great local joints in the pizza world, either classic NY thin crust or Neopolitan style.  I'm interested in John's of Bleecker Street, Roberta's, and Joe & Pat's among others, but we're open to any suggestions.

If you're in Williamsburg, checkout L'Industrie Pizzeria

If you're looking for a good brunch place and don't mind taking the subway to the Upper West Side, go to Maison Pickle (84th and Broadway). Tasty food and gigantic portions.

Saw 3 shows there last weekend, and all three were aggressively enforcing masking.

Looking at the lines to get into the Holland and Lincoln Tunnel from the Jersey side confirms my position to never fly into Newark for a NYC visit if at all possible.

Eh, depending on your destination it can work. I've made it from my financial district apartment to the terminal in 41 minutes when I timed it perfectly. PATH to Newark Penn, bus to EWR. It can also be good if you're going to midtown and can take NJT right in to NY Penn. If you're cabbing-no shot.

    Quicker than JFK or LGA.

  4. Zadar is awesome. Spent three nights there last summer.

Great outdoor bars, hopping right off the oceanside walkways to cool off in the Adriatic... Car-free downtown. Highly recommend.

Hvar is also great-rent mopeds to zoom around the island and get away from the crowds of town to more secluded beachs.

Thx Owl for the responses.  Mine:

    1) Well I could check but these were direct and a pretty good price.  There is a nonstop flight leaving about 3 hours later (about 5 p.m.) and i might switch to that, but it's about $70 p/p more.  So it's an option.  I just liked the shorter-time direct nonstop after a 8+ hour flight back.  But I could do the later flight perhaps.

    2) Yeah the flat fee works for JFK, but apparently LaG is on meter.  No big deal and it's midday, not rush hour, but either way it seems to be the best way to go.  I'm wondering how cabbies like that route, or is considered a hassle to go "all the way out to Queens" or whatever?

Whoops-glossed over the fact that the other flight is into LGA... From LGA, it's only $2.75/person to the city. Q70 to Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave where you can transfer to the subway which will get you to Midtown. About 45 minutes of transit time. A cab will run you ~$50-60 after tip (less if there's not much traffic, more if you really get stalled).

Thought I'd stick this in here since this is currently popular (that's what I said to the above's mom of course the other night).

    2 airports questions:

    1) Is 2 1/2 ish hours' layover good enough between flights at JFK?  Explanation: Landing in mid-Sept. about 11a ET from Germany, Term. 1.  I've scheduled a flight to Austin leaving 2:20 hours later, I think Term. 3 (Delta).  Er'ryone has Global Warmin... er, Global Entry (again, like SA's mom).  You think that's enough time to get thru processing/catch the next flight?  Far as I know Delta isn't on baggage connection or whatever with Lufthansa (aren't they a United partner?).  Anyway, flights are independent, so no check-thru etc.

2)Best means of getting 5 w/luggage from LaGuardia to Midtown (UN Hiilton?  Explanation: Outbound trip from AUS lands in LaGuardia (SWA) around lunchtime.   The bus/subway route seems kinda long and indirect for only 8 miles, plus as I said luggage. I see horror stories about uber/shuttles, etc.  I don't mind footing for a private vehicle but for 8 miles?  I know they used to have that airport circuit bus but that closed in 2020.  Next day out to JFK, I guess cab again, though that's a flat rate I think.  Anyway, what I hear is "if you don't have any homies there to pick you up, use a 5-man cab."  Is that about right?

    1) You *should* be OK if everything is on time (especially if you have GE/Precheck). I’d definitely book this itinerary if it was a Star Alliance connection but it gives me pause that your flight back to Austin is on Delta so you won’t be protected in the event of a misconnect. There’s nothing better via EWR, ORD, or IAH on LH/UA?

    2) Flat fee cab is your best option and with 5 people, not really any more expensive than the public transit options (the Air Train tickets just went to $8 and that’s before Subway/LIRR tickets).

Any restaurant recommendations for an 11-year-old boy, nothing too fancy, but nothing too touristy? We’re staying midtown just south of Central Park and with be in those parts for most of the trip, but will also get around to lower Manhattan (we’re doing the Liberty Island/Ellis Island ferry tour and the 9/11 museum one day).

If you're going to be in the village and you don't want to do pizza, Leroy House is a pretty good spot that isn't usually overrun.

The wife has an event at the Met (art, not opera) - any decent causal-ish Italian spots within a 20 or so minute walk of 80th and 5th?

I got Mermaid Oyster reservations btw

San Matteo at 81st and 2nd was one of my favorites when I lived in that neighborhood.

There have been many articles written about how an improved football product has increased enrollment at Baylor and TCU.

    Sure-I agree with those articles.

I'm just not sure there's evidence that the counterfactual (a worsened football product) would "erase" those gains.

Rice and SMU have mostly sucked at football since the SWC (and Rice since 1960) yet both remain fine universities.

I think in the long run this could help Aggy hit 75k enrollment, 25k in engineering. This will drive the semi-smart kids away from Baylor, TCU, and Tech's Business School into Aggy's arms because they want to see a decent football team in a good conference.

They never see the long game.

    Eh... I don't know if that's true.

Is there really any evidence to suggest that conference realignment has ruined a school's ACADEMIC fate? I can think of schools who have been HELPED by realignment (TCU to name one), but none that have been truly hurt. Open to examples though!

Case Western, UChicago, the Ivies, Rice, etc... All screwed themselves or got screwed by others yet all remain very competitive academically.

    Tough break for the Stags.

As for the attractiveness of women from Fairfield, there are certainly better looking ones. Quinnipiac has far better talent though if we're talking CT MAAC schools.

Rice alum checking in... Bragga was a complete abortion of a hire.  The AD at Rice is a fucking clown (Joe Karlgaard...came from Stanford).  Wayne Graham had recommended Pat Hallmark as his successor, and the AD didn't listen.  Pat has gone on to some nice results at Incarnate Word and now UTSA.  Then Lance Berkman was publicly politicking for the job, but at the same time he appeared in a Houston commercial about his opposition to trannies in women's bathrooms or some shit like that and the Rice President decided that wasn't on brand for Rice, so Berkman was out.  Berkman also managed to piss off some donors.  Now I'm hearing through sources that Pat Hallmark won't work for the douche AD (can't blame him).

Sean Allen has major ties to the Houston area, given his playing and coaching career across town at U of H.  Would be an instant recruiting shot in the arm.  The candidates I'm hearing about at Pat Hallmark, Sean Allen, Rob Childress, Tom Arrington (San Jac) and Jake Gautreau (Miss St. Asst....former Tulane player).  I'd be happy with any of those.  The decision makers will be the Rice President who doesn't give two shits about sports (think Mr Burns from the Simpsons) and the AD who is simply incompetent.  I completely expect them to fuck it up.

    This pretty much nails it.

Hopefully this baseball coach will be the last coach Joe K hires. He’s been sniffing around the Duke and Northwestern jobs but I’d be happy if we just fired him so he has more time to train for marathons and blog about critical race theory.

That said-I think you nailed all the main contenders. If Joe hires another Stanford assistant I will jump...

The only way a full time, out of pocket B-School is worth it is when it's a top 15 and you have line of sight to MBB, Big 4 S&O/Consulting, Investment Banking or Private Equity (or maybe O&G/E in Texas and Real Estate in the South), which is his plan. You invest $200k for an Ivy MBA and you can get on a track to make 7 Figures a year, decently early, if you play your cards right.

99% of people aren't type-A or psychotic enough to do this or want that life/lifestyle, but RiceOwl strikes me as a Try-Hard who aspires to bit loafers and Hermes ties, so he'll be fine.

Is the opportunity cost worth it?  B-School will cost $100k+ and you'll lose 2 years at $100k+.  Is the credential actually a necessity for the role and comp you seek?

Of course, I am assuming the "quit your job and go full time" path.  Executive/weekend MBA has a different calculus.  Corporate sponsorship is a no-brainer.

Essentially my plan is to apply to the M7 schools for full-time programs and if I get into one of those, I will go... I'm also applying to NYU Stern for their part-time program which is a very solid PT program. My company will pay for part of the PT program if I go that route so it'd the sting away a bit... I figure that a Stern MBA (even part-time) will give me some level of career optionality down the road (though recognize the recruiting/career change process is less cut and dry than going back FT).

I think the answer to that is yes, and you are in CPG now so I'm sure you will see it as well, I'm back onsite in the Midwest for a project for a large CPG and most everyone I know is starting to go back onsite now, most have to be armed with proof of vaccination.

Being on the case team for interesting business problems will never not be valuable and relevant, so lucrative exit opps into industry will always be there IMHO.

Yup-Our Chicago and Bentonville offices are open but our NNJ office (where I work) is not yet open.

Of course-Our manufacturing sites never stopped running and our field sales team was only out of stores for a month or so last spring.

Thanks for the response and that’s super interesting— and these recruits were out of undergrad business and economics? I get it that Rice is no slouch and has a good national reputation, but a target school it was not (back in my day/get off my lawn!).

I’ve worked at a variety of consultancies and different firms over my many years, but never on a partner track. My advice to you is that if you want to make real money, put in the effort now, get into an M7, and get to work!

Variety of majors-but four or five out of Econ (Rice didnt have an undergrad business program when I was there-starting it for Fall of ‘21, actually). Variety of locations-but Houston most common obviously. A couple in Atlanta and Dallas. Only 2 off the top of my head were in NY and SF which were the toughest offices to get, pre-Covid at least.

Traditionally, my impression is that most consulting firms only had Dallas and Houston offices in Texas but I know several are opening Austin offices which should be great for UT grads (and Rice to a lesser extent).

I think it’ll be interesting to see how consulting evolves post-Covid as I know many people like it for the travel and perks (in addition to the exit opps). Will clients still want people “on-site” as much!?

1). MBB doesn't really hire undergrad econ majors and especially not from non-targets like Rice unless you are purely back-office and not on a customer facing track, no offense. Unless you are talking about MBA/Jones, then maybe.

2). Analyst roles are brutally underpaid for the amount of work you have to do. It's basically a half-paid internship. Glass half full: you learn a ton.

3). My advice as someone with a similar profile: Bust your hump and get into a consultancy firm if you want to make money. You can always boomerang back into industry but this next time you can do it for a $180k base as a people manager with strategic responsibilities and budget.

FWIW-From my class of 970 at Rice, Mckinsey hired 3, Bain hired 5, and BCG 8 to "front office" undergrad roles (i.e. Business Analyst at Mckinsey, Associate at BCG, Associate Consultant at Bain). That's across all majors though-maybe four or five of those were econ? They hired lots of ChemE majors. So whi

I honestly don't think I'm particularly underpaid.. Just shy of 100k for 40 hours a week at age 25 isn't bad. Am I getting rich? No, not yet... But plenty of money to have a decent apartment, go on some fun trips, and put away 10% of my paycheck (+6% company match) into a 401k. To your point though-things were definitely less fun making 60-80k, especially when I moved to the northeast.

I'm planning on applying to B-School though for the Fall '22 cycle though and have GMAT scores that should get me into a top 15. So line of site to 175-ish (assuming I do consulting post-MBA) is there before I'm 30.

  17. I'm three years out of Rice (finished in 12/2017) and was an econ major who didn't have the grades for MBB so I went into CPG:

Starting Salary of 65k @ large publicly traded CPG company (think KO, PEP, PG) as a junior financial analyst in DFW

18 months in was promoted to a financial analyst position for same company... Salary bump to 77k in greater NYC.

Left company after two years for a different large CPG company, this one privately held... Salary bump to 96k in a senior strategy analyst role in greater NYC.

i don't think you can go a few blocks east or west from upper kirby and be noticeably less safe.  and that's true for the entire stretch of kirby from braes bayou on north.

the last little few bits of sketchy neighborhoods inside the 59/45/610 area to the west of downtown were the S/SE end of midtown and the NE heights-adjacent area above north main.

that's probably true if you extend the area to north of braes bayou

Yeah, I lived at the corner of Hermann and Alameda in 2016-17 and in a large apartment complex and though it wasn’t really dangerous, I did get robbed at the gas station on that corner. Close enough to the 3rd Ward that there’s some spillover.

Nice apartment though and good for a bunch of college kids.

Are you referring to Trei? He was a Cape Cod league All-Star and is projected as top 3 round pick. Just hasn’t hit tonight but he’ll be fine over the course of a season.

The younger brother, Antonio, is a good glue guy-but yes-probably going to have to work a day job unlike his father and grandfather.

We can relate.  Are some Rice pitchers hurt?  This guy can't be the ace of the staff.

The best Rice pitcher is Roel Garcia who’s coming off TJ. Expecting him to start Sunday and pitch 2-3 innings.
