  1. Fuck yes.

JFC I love some double R. Strongest contender for McLennan County. Have not been to Kitox’s in years, they used to be my go to but fell off hard in the last few years.

There is a hole in the wall south of Possum Kingdom that was fantastic. I’ll have to look it up. Should be on the surly list.

Growing up, used to eat at the Birch Diner after a long day on Lake Summerville. It was in a trailer home. And it was glorious.

  2. Tried this tonight.  It was OK, but kind of soft, much like its Aggy owners:

Agreed. Didn’t know it was Aggie owned. Met one of the son or son in laws of the owners (I think. It was late in the trip) in Napa at a tasting and thought It was just ok, would not go out of my way to drink it. Hell, forgot about it until you posted, lol.

As I mentioned, that trip got canceled due to riots, curfews, etc. A couple of friends recently asked us to go to Napa but we pointed out that it's on fire, so we pitched Charleston instead and now it's booked for Nov 12-15. Pretty pumped and hoping the October 2020 Epic Disaster of the Month doesn't find a way to nix it again.

Instead of a hotel, we booked a house this time. It's right off King St near the Marion Square, which looks like it will give easy access to a lot of places.

Only dinner reservation so far is for Husk. Trying to figure out the others. Not sure if we need brunch reservations or not?

We also booked a ghost tour pub crawl which sounds interesting.

The Fort Sumter tour is pretty cool, especially if you go in the morning and watch the flag raising ceremony.  Lots of history in Charleston.  I'm not overly into history, but it was still cool to see and hear about everything.

It's hard to go wrong with food and drink options.

Good call on Husk.  I would second Magnolias recommendation.

Dessert at peninsula grill (coconut cake is a must)

Lunch places I would look into Poogan's Porch, Hominy Grill, Lewis BBQ and Leon's

  4. Having my first pool built (we had one when I was a teen that I maintained).
Specs are 34x14' about 13,500 gallons.  3.5' to 6' depth.  Priced with all Jandy equipment including the robotic cleaner, gas heater, and DE filter.
It will have a faux negative edge on the arc end.  I was initially nervous about water splash out but I guess it will be ok?
I saw up thread a lot of people mentioned getting the heat pump pool heater but is that a good plan with a spa?  About 1/3 of the cost is in the sidewalks and decking.  We have to push it out from the house to protect a heritage oak (represented by the white tree) close to the house.
    Anything you guys would change?

    Looks real good.
I have a huge oak tree that hangs over our pool and it’s a pain in the ass to keep the pool clean because the robot does not clean that well in my opinion. I wish I was not talked out of the in-floor cleaning system to help clean what the robot does not. Might be worth looking into. Just my 2 cents.

Any updates for this? You know with Covid around. Looking for a date night spot. No steakhouses. Thanks in advance.

Drakes has a great date night vibe, awesome food.  Would be on the top of my list to go back too.

Also, cant go wrong with The Charles. Always a lively atmosphere.  Great chargrilled oysters and a new champagne bar which could be much appreciated by the wife if she is into bubbles.

This topic can be on many levels. Beers available to you. Beers you have drank out of country. Beers in regions you arent in.

To me there are two and only two. Alaskan Amber. What a great beer. It's got some hop and very malty. Somewhat fruity as well. Before texas got it, I had my rep from Oregon ship me a 6er that I paid for once a year.

My 2nd choice is local. Revolver. Got dang blood and honey is great. This to me is a heavy beer that I can only drink 2 of them. Great burger beer. Not at all a beer you can sit and drink 4 of them at a bar because the alco content is a bit on the high side.

    Let's hear more suggestions.

Tried Revolver Blood and Honey last night for the first time.  Great recommendation  You are right, this beer makes you want a damn good burger to go with it.  Will keep in the rotation.  Cheers.

Yeah I’m sure none of them are what they used to be.  I can definitely confirm that is the case with Wolf / Sub Zero.  We’re on house number 3 with them since 2013.  And just in the last 7 years it’s all slipped considerably.

Say more about the slip in quality, specifically on Sub-Zero as this is relevant to my interests.

I cannot speak from direct experience of owning a sub zero.  However, I was in the industry for a long time and over the past few years I heard repeatedly from appliance companies and kitchen dealers that Sub Zero quality was tanking.  They would always joke you needed to buy two, so you would always have one working.  Appliance guys hate to work on them too.  Lots of potential issues pulling them out of the built in cabinetry to work on them.  If they offer an extended warranty, it would probably be a good idea to consider it.

Huge improvement and looks great.  But good luck with the whole kids thing.  They seem to quit giving a shit about swimming about the time they hit their teens.  At least to that point that it doesn't factor into where they want to hang out.

You are probably right, its already trending that way.  I was hoping it was just due to everyone on lockdown.  I guess the silver lining will be the wife and I get some alone time in the hot tub.  I'll stock the outside fridge with champagne, bourbon, and vodka since I will not have to worry about teenagers syphoning it off.

I've heard a bunch of stories like this, which has weighed heavily on my decision making process. I've got it down to two builders, and I'm strongly leaning towards the smaller one where I've dealt with the owner throughout the process instead of a sales guy. The smaller company is also the only one who was willing to negotiate payment terms (I asked all of them that I wanted at least 10% of the deal contingent on final final signoff).

Appreciate the thoughts in your other post as well.

Smart move to get them to agree to 10% if you can.  I think mine was only $1500, Less then 2%.  They were so busy, final punch out, which was very minor, and our argument with city final inspector, not minor, drug out for over a month.  If it would have been 10%, they probably would have moved faster.

We are in the market for a new main refrigerator. Our good friend contractor is strongly recommending KitchenAid. Any other brands to consider? We want the standard French door, over/under style (current is a side-by-side, which kind of sucks). Anybody have experience with LG fridges?

My french door KitchenAid lasted about 12 years, with little issues until the last month or two.  Good mid priced fridge.  No major complaints and I would recommend.  I replaced with a Bosch counter depth for few reasons.  First, I like that the water dispenser is on the inside.  Just makes for a sleeker look.   I also like that It makes smaller ice cubes, not quite sonic ice, but about half of the standard size ice. From the research I did, it has two compressors, one for the fridge and one for the freezer, where most in the market have one compressor to share.  Having a separate refrigerated drawer has been more useful then I thought it would be. It is on the upper price scale in the mid range category, but nowhere near subzero and viking.  If Bosch is in your budget, take a hard look, I definitely would recommend over KitchenAid

I'm leaning toward quartz when I do my kitchen.  What kind do you have?

I was in the countertop business for 18 years.  All counters have pros and cons.  Quartz is good as long as its a name brand (Cambria, Silestone, etc).  The marked is flooded with cheap Chinese quartz that I have seen have all kind of issues.  Personally, I was a fan of fabricating it because to was easy too work with for the most part, but I would not put it in my house because I don't like the way it looks compared to natural stone.

Pros:  Never have to seal it, scratch resistant, color consistency is pretty good.  Cons:  You can not put heat directly on top (including crock pots, electric skillets, hot pans -- it will crack--seen it many times) and you can not do sharp inside corners (it will crack).

PM if you need more info, have any questions you want honest answers or a recommendation for a fabricator, I still have a ton of contracts,

    Good Luck

  12. Decided to recreate one of my all time greatest Italian restaurant dishes tonight. RPM Italian Chicago spicy squid ink crab pasta. Tried recreating on my own a few times with moderate success. Finally found recipe thank god. Personally, This is a top 5 dish for a number of reason. Had to sub on jalapeño for Fresno chili peppers and added a small lobster tail on top, but still was a crazy good dinner. Pasta easily available on Amazon.

  13. Done. In the market for a Tundra now.

Loved my tundra. Easily my favorite truck I ever owned. Thought the interior was superior to ford and Gm (in 2016 at least). The bed is a little shorter in a crew max, but I loved the added interior space.

Only problem is the gas mileage is garbage. I averaged 12.5 mpg. Maybe 14 highway. At 24k miles a year, it added up. I will admit I have a heavy foot, but never had a vehicle that just sucked gas like the tundra did.

If I ever went back to a truck, tundra would no doubt be the choice.

  14. Raw ready-to-cook corn tortillas. These are fantastic. Found somewhere in a refrigerated section.

These are freaking awesome. Been buying them for years. Once you start cooking with these, you will not go back.

Don’t take your eye off the pan, these tend to burn fast if you are heavy on the heat.

  16. Pool building time lines depend on a lot of factors.  A pool can easily be completed in a 60-90 days if all your selections and decisions are made on the front end and your pool builder has his ducks in a row, gets all his subs scheduled properly and you don't have any city inspection issues.  Most pool builders are familiar with the city codes, but always double check set backs and requirements yourself to save the hassle on the back end.  Even with a ton of change orders, coordinating with our outdoor kitchen construction and delaying my pool builder a few weeks due to planned trips, he was able to dig out our old pool, fill in the back yard, and dig a new pool and complete in about 90 days,   Also, weather can be an issue, so cross fingers for a dry spell.

As far as TV's go, you can get a cheap large- internet ready Samsung 4k from Target for around $500-$600.  Buy a good TV cover that wraps around all sides from Amazon.  I have two TVs outside that I keep covered, one is completely open to the elements for 6 years and I have no problems so far.  I looked at outdoor TV's but figured I can by a new one every other year 5 times and still be better off.

  17. We have been invited to a wine tasting hangout at a friend's house in a couple weeks. One of those things where everyone brings two bottles, one is opened for the sake of blind taste testing, the second bottle is part of the prize. Whoever brings the favorite wine gets to take home all of the duplicate bottles.
Anyways, they didn't really give specifications on varietal, just basically needs to be red wine and $25-50 price range. Any suggestions for a good crowd pleaser?

If you are looking to go with a red check out Caravan, Cuttings and Quilt. These should do well and fit are all around $50. Cuttings would be the “biggest” wine out of the three. Caravan the smoothest, with Quilt being the most well rounded. Good luck.
