  1. TL/DR up front - is it an absolute mistake to go to WDW with a 15 month old?
We are considering booking something the week of the 12/2 or 12/9 for my daughter's 5th birthday for 3-4 park days.
We did a 1 BR villa at AK resort last year, and it was perfect... except for having to shuttle absolutely everywhere.  Daughter was 3 at the time, so it was manageable, but now will have a 15  month old in tow, so the shuttles will be no bueno with a double stroller.
When we went last time, we got there at rope drop and generally made it to around 4 each day before heading back, cleaning up, having dinner, then crashing early.  Worked great.  This time around, we'll have to come back midday to nap, etc., then head back out (or not) depending how kids are doing.  Because of that, we want to be on monorail so we can get to and fro in fairly short order (we'll be at MK or Epcot every day).
I have Contemporary Bay Tower 1 BR villa in my cart on the website, but waffling...

I think the contemporary is ideal for your situation. You can walk to MK about as fast as taking the monorail.

Also, think about getting two single strollers in case you have to divide and conquer. It’s also easier to maneuver in crowds, on and off busses and you double your storage area to

We always used a third party and were happy. I thought the strollers were considerably better then the ones from Disney.

That’s a great time to go. We have been twice that week and the crowds are small. See if food and wine is still going on at Epcot.

I’ll take my grey goose martini, glass cooled w Ice and half a cap of vermouth, 3 x 1.5 shots of goose, 1/2 cap of vermouth, and a pinch of salt. Shaken to beyond cold. Drop in twist or blue cheese stuffed olives

    2X Not quite enough
    3x way too many

I’ll Never drink a gin martini, I like life too much and hate pine trees equally

    Cheers

  5. Definitely doable. We generally take the first flight from Dallas and land in Orlando around 11:30/12:00 eastern time. We are having lunch at Casey corner by 1:15 - 1:30. It’s 45 minutes if you catch the Disney resort bus to your hotel. Worst case 90 minutes of your bus is pulling out when you hit the line.

Not sure times on baggage claim and Uber to hotel times but it can’t be much worse

You should be drunk some where between Germany and france by 5:00

Actually very jealous. Epcot for adults is very under rated.

Disney springs has some seriously good restaurants too.

Almost forgot to add. Had a really good super Tuscan wine at the restaurant in Italy (Tutto itialia). Great food too.

Fish and chips in England for a quick meal was solid

One of the best seats in the whole place is the deck at the Mexican place for fireworks. Food/ drinks are ok, but nowhere near as good as the Mexican place inside There is also a great tequila bar down stairs too.

  6. Trying to figure out if this is worth it. Work conference next week. My flight arrives in Orlando at 1pm on Friday. I’ll have checked bags. (Golf clubs) I’m staying at the Dolphin, so easy walk or boat ride to Epcot. Is it realistic to expect to be in the park by 3? I’ll uber to hotel. I think they close at 9. Just want to explore the countries in more detail. Every other time I’ve been, it’s with kids, so we did it too fast.
I won’t buy a ticket until I get there in case of delays. Think it would be fun to drink around the world by myself and just check out everything. Won’t do any rides or anything most likely. Might get princess pics.
I don’t have anything to do until Saturday at 5pm, so hangover not an issue.

  7. Wife (no pics) taking me to Chicago for my 40th. Neither one has ever been.

Love a mix of great restaurants, cool bars, local hole in the walls. Hate the whole 18 course tasting menus thing. Not paying $800 to leave hungry and looking for late night pizza

Going mid July during all star break so no cubs games.

    Staying at Thompson Chicago.

So hit me with your can’t miss, old faithful go to’s

Already have drinks at signature room booked and Spiaggia booked

    Looking for

    deep dish pizza

Old school Chicago steak house (anyone recommend Gibson’s?)

Great bars with views, history or general fantastic day drinking potential.

    Go...

  8. Returned to Town Hearth Friday evening. Ended up with late reservation due to the have we decided to ditch del frisco last minute. But gave us a chance to pregame at the bar at Nobu before for cocktails and sushi.

Got to Town Hearth an hour before our reservations and had a glass of wine, chill and people watch. I’ve decided this is how Nick and Sam’s was 10 years ago. Fun, energetic and loud. Finished my wine and the bar tender who has been there since they opened, poured me another on the house. I tried to give him a $20 tip as a thanks and he refused, thanked us for dining with them.

Dinner started with the meatballs. Can’t pass them up. Like the neighborhood services better because of the voodoo sauce but still awesome. Wife (no pics) ordered red snapper with the brown butter sauce. One of the biggest filets I have seen at a restaurant. Seriously good.

I ordered the nightly special wagyu ribeye cap medium rare. Honestly was one of the best steaks I’ve had at a restaurant in years. Brussel sprouts we great.

After a two hour lunch/ drinks earlier, more drinks by the pool, drinks and sushi at Nobu, plus wine and meal at TH, we were done.

Overall, fun atmosphere, great service and excellent food.

Been twice and both were great experiences. Would recommend if you want great steakhouse food without the stuffy traditional setting.

  9. LVRJ:

Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria luxury brand expects to plant its flag on the Strip when it takes over operation of the 392-room Mandarin Oriental at CityCenter in August.

CityCenter Holdings, a subsidiary of MGM Resorts International, announced in April that it was selling the 47-story property and adjacent retail properties to an undisclosed buyer for $214 million. That sale resulted in the cancellation of Mandarin Oriental’s management agreement.

The rebranding announced Wednesday is a part of Waldorf Astoria’s western U.S. expansion following its 2017 opening in Beverly Hills, California, and a planned development in San Francisco within three years. The company currently has 20 properties in its development pipeline.

The Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas, as it will be known, is one of two non-gaming properties at CityCenter, but is adjacent to Aria and its casino.

Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas will participate in Hilton Honors, the company’s guest-loyalty program for Hilton’s 14 brands.

Well sh@$!!! Was planing on a quick run to hang at the MO this summer. Was real impressed last time I was there in February

  10. If you can get tickets, do the blue bird cafe. Have to buy tickets Monday 8am the week of. Awesome experience. You probably will not know the name of the person playing, doesn’t matter. It’s usually the song writers and they tell the stories behind the songs while they play. Occasionally super stars who live in Nash will show up unannounced and play too.
It’s small (like 40 people) and will be on the top of my list when I go back again.

Second on Hattie B’s hot chicken.

Marsh house at the Thompson hotel is really good.

So is the roof top bar at the Thompson. (Called LA Jackson)

Biscuit love is good, usually a wait.

Loved Bar Taco. Really good margaritas. Good tacos. Cool patio and area (called south 12th I think). Cool bars, restaurants etc. went back twice

Tootsies is a three story honky Tonk with stages going on all three levels. Lots of fun.

Did not go much further down broadway beyond tootsies.

Xm radio has a live broadcast Friday’s at margaritaville. It’s fun to watch drunk people get on radio

3rd and Linsley is a cool bar not too far off the normal areas that has cheap drinks and usually good bands.

Skip the grand ole opry. Unless you like 1950’s country show acts and sitting with old people. We got up and left.

    Check out Vandy and Belmont

Has anyone had this one? Spent some time at Total Wine in Dallas for the first time. Their wine expert was pushing this one hard after I was showing him what we had in stock and what we like. I was just not up to a $129.99 miss.

It ranks high on line and on the Vivino app, but I have never heard of it.

    Cheers

  12. What’s the scoop. Wife wants to bring the kids this summer (8&11).    One of the few islands we have not been too.

What are the “tourist traps” to avoid?

Any can’t miss local restaurants and activities.

Prices look in line with other islands. Fairly easy to get there using southwest points. I’ll let someone else sit next to window

  13. Jesus!

    Nassau and Jamaica?
    Heres what I’d look at
St. John, BVI, Providenciales, Isla Mujeres, Anguilla, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, St. Barth’s, Exuma, Eleuthera, St. Kitts & Nevis.   Start with those.  I probably missed a couple.

Eleuthera is incredible. Went last summer. Very small. I’ve been to 90% of the islands and this is by far my favorite. Especially if you are wanting to unplug and relax. You will most likely be the only people on the beach for miles.

Look up French leave resort and the cove.

  14. Where did you stay in Yountville?  We went out a couple months ago and stayed at the Bardessono.  Didn't make it to any of the wineries you mentioned with the exception of Caymus.  My favorite winery was Reverie.  They are relatively small, but have great wines.  I usually can't stand most white wines but they have a Roussane/Marsanne that is fantastic.

In addition to the Caymus cab, I was really impressed with the Conundrum sparkling rose.  That is a great everyday drinker, along with Abstract.  It's hard to justify opening an $80-100 bottle of wine on Tuesday night.  Meomi Pinot Noir is a good one in the $20 range.

Stayed at the Vintage House is Yountville. Perfect location. Everything newly remodeled. Very happy with it and will return.

I got a list of vineyards from a friend that travels there extensively and has an insane collection. I researched them and picked them ones that fit my budget and what I wanted to accomplish.

Most of the vineyards we visited I had not heard of and were small, had great tours and fun employees that really knew how to enhance the experience. We walked out of Hall tour. It was a shit show. Hundreds of people waiting and walking around. On all others it was just us or no more then 8-10 people.

Also helped to literally map it out and try to reserve tours close to each other so you are not wasting hours driving between.

By far the top three were

    1. Odette. (Includes Cade, Plumpjack, and adaptation)
    2. Schramsburg. Sparkling
    3. Barnette food wine, great views
With frank family a close fourth. (Do the private reserve tasting, worth the extra $) solid wines

Let me know if you need any more suggestions.

  15. Focused thread of California wines. Wine, trips, tips or recommendations go here. Show off your good stuff or recommend a daily drinker here.

Just went for the first time in February. Great time. Stayed in Yountville. Drank and ate for four glorious days and learned a ton. It can be a little intimidating planning, but once you get through the first day and see how it works you can relax and enjoy.

    30d7346d250590bee787500a104f963e.jpg

What’s left of what we brought back and our first shipment

By far, the 2014 Odette cab is the best wine I have ever had. It’s outstanding. Great tour, and all their wines are top notch. They also do appellation, Cade and plumpjack. Just went to their 2015 release event in Dallas last week and the 2015 Odette and Cade are very very good. Still prefer the Odette.

Barnett Rattlesnake Hill is another really good one. Best view in Napa valley.

Anderson’s conn valley is good, has some cool history and a small cult following.

Schramsberg is a must stop. Good sparking and decent cab

Far Niete and Frank family are good and can find them at H-E-B. Frank family reserve Chardonnay was a standout for me and I don’t like many white wines.

Shafer was actually disappointing. Great vineyard, but thought their wines were way over hyped and equally over priced.

Since our trip my new everyday is Conundrum by Wagner/caymus. I always have a bottle or two of caymus in the wine fridge along with Jordan.

Still a fan of Orwin Swift, even after he sold out to one of the big boys. Abstract is a nice weekend wine as well as prisoner. Keeping one of his original papillon for the right night too.

Favorite $20 red is Boogle Phantom along with Edge from Silverado trail in Napa.

Always looking for more to add more to the arsenal.

  16. Ok, I need to give Bob’s on Lemmon a try. Currently burnt out on options. Nick and Sam’s is way past it’s glory days. Past three visits have been under whelming, bad, and laughable. 7 or 8 years ago it was killer.

Love Papa’s. Hate location. The Houston one is one of my all time favorites.

Town hearth is great. Food fantastic. Service and drinks awesome. It is what Nick and Sam’s used to be. But sometimes you want to be able to not have to scream to be heard across the table.

  17. Tei-an is my go too, number one, can’t miss. Not as fun as Uchi or Nobu, but you just can’t find better consistent knock it out of the park sushi. Nobu is my second choice and uchi is a distant third.

Actually like the sushi at R+D kitchen. Don’t sleep on it. One of my favorite meals in Dallas, two rolls, their killer Hamburger, and a super cold grey goose martini.

  18. Went to Nick’s new place Perfect Union Pizza last night in HP village. It was fun watching him work the line while catching the end of the masters. Food was fantastic. Love the pizzas.  Thin, but crispy crust with really good toppings. Pasta was spot on too. Like most of his restaurants, it’s loud and vibrant. This place will do very very well.   I’d put it above Cane Russo, which is saying something

His vodoo sauce is still one of my favorite things ever created.
