I've got no real skin in the game or ability to affect the outcome, so I might as well have fun with it. It's not like Texas football defines me in any way beyond having a weird solidarity with Cleveland fans on Sunday about knowing overhyped disappointment.

    Messingham, though. Yikes.

I just want you to be as angry and sad as all of us Tex. Where’s the alignment man?

    247 / Chip Brown / Coaching search

      Reveal hidden contents

Monday, 8 pm - Sources told horns247.com even before Herman reassigned Beck to quarterbacks coach through UT’s bowl game that Herman would be interested in talking to Graham Harrell and LSU receivers coach and passing game coordinator Joe Brady as candidates to run Texas’ offense.

With Harrell staying at USC, and reports that LSU has put together a new deal for Brady, another name to keep an eye on might be Kansas State offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham, who served as tight ends coach and then receivers coach at Iowa State under Paul Rhoads when Herman was offensive coordinator for the Cyclones from 2009-11.

Former Rutgers coach Chris Ash, whom Horns247 was first to report Sunday would be Texas' new defensive coordinator, was also at Iowa State as defensive backs coach with Herman and Messingham in 2009.

Messingham has spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator for Chris Klieman - on national championship teams at North Dakota State in 2017 and 2018 and at K-State in 2019. (Chip Brown)

It's amazing how much more seriously people take 9.95ers when they confirm what they want to believe.

Yeah you were saying this same stuff regarding Burton being almost 100% sure Ash was the DC. Look how that turned out

I checked in with my sources on Sunday afternoon, and was able to gather several Longhorn coordinator coaching nuggets to pass along to you:

--- From what I was told, Chris Ash agreed to become Texas’ defensive coordinator nearly a week ago. Ash considered taking the job at Ohio State, but wanted to challenge of improving Texas’ defense.

--- It appears Ash will have a two-year deal. His contract details will not be revealed for a few weeks. I will need a little more time to flush that out.

--- My sources believe Ash will arrive in Austin within the next two weeks for Alamo Bowl preparation. He is not expected to coach the team this month. However, he will have the ability to contact recruits once his contract is approved by the board of regents. At worst, Ash should hit the ground running in January.

--- Ash is the defensive coordinator. He is not the co-defensive coordinator.

--- Every defensive coach will have an opportunity to interview with Ash after the season, according to my sources inside the building.

--- In addition, my sources said LSU’s Joe Brady and USC’s Graham Harrell are still the top offensive coordinator candidates. However, neither candidate is a slam dunk. There are three to four other candidates on the secretive list if Brady or Harrell are not hired at Texas.

--- Once again, I was told by a person close to Herman that Herman does not believe the offense played so poorly this season that it needs an overhaul. Instead, I was told Herman’s main goal is to find a play-caller who matches his offensive philosophies. My interpretation of that information is once the smoke clears, there is a chance Herman’s hire may not have a lot of hype, but will have the attributes he desires.

--- It is hard to pinpoint a timeline on the offensive coordinator position. However, I sense the position will be filled before the bowl game.

    I will keep you posted.

Get Herman the fuck out of here. He has a chance for Harrell but doesn’t think the offense was bad enough??? He is such a dipshit. Please CDC, fire his stupid ass

    Such as?

Bill Belichick for one. That Steelers team has a pretty good defense wonder what their head coach would say to Tom? Seriously though idk to be honest, but that’s not my job. I just can’t believe that there is not another coach in college or the NFL (think Joe Brady but defense!!) that would be far superior then Chris Ash. I very seriously doubt Tom would have him as a candidate if Tom didn’t already know him. I don’t want someone hired just cause “well I’ve already coached with him before and he’s not the worst soooo fuck it you’re hired!!”

Just one not all, much less a circle jerk as you claim.

Nah I’m good. But I know you remember all those people saying “Shut up, he’s a QB whisperer, look what he did with Teddy!”. or “Shut up, look how Strong made Louisville elite, he knows what he’s doing!!”. Everyone here remembers that. And I never said it was a “circle jerk”. I’m sure most people did not approve of the hire just as most people on here would probably rather have someone better then Ash.

Link please. I don't remember the defense of Watson by anyone but the idiot on BON.

Yeah man let me go on Shaggy and find all those for you. Definitely gonna do that

So if Ash never won a championship as the DC at OSU when Herman was there for 1 fucking year, it wouldn't be a comfort hire? You are saying things that fucking retards say.

No it’s the fact Herman and Ash are both seemingly very fond of that fucking dickweed WR coach we just fired, the fact Ash hired one of the worst staffs in college football history including that dickweed as his offensive coordinator, and the fact that Ash was apparently helping out since the OU game and our defense still sucked shit through a straw. Why are there no other colleges trying to hire this guy if he’s so fucking great other then OSU who would hire him as a Co-DC with no play calling responsibilities? OSU fans seem to think their defense got a lot better once Ash left. Plus the fact Ash is apparently a massive douche coaches the same way as Herman and obviously doesn’t know how to surround himself with other good position coaches (ex: Rutgers) when that is what we need most right now. Like I said, rationalize all you want. Still would be a bad hire. No other reason for Herman to hire him unless it’s for the comfort aspect and the fact that they HAVE worked together. Herman would not even be considering him if that wasn’t the case dumbass

  9. “Most of the board want Herman fired”

I sure as fuck don’t. I want to win the Big 12 next year. I want Herman to never lose a game at Texas ever again. That’s why if he hired Chris fucking Ash then my confidence in that happening would go from 20% to 0% instantly. It’s a comfort hire.

  10. 8 minutes ago, Dbeasy said:

Jeez the Ash bashing is so stupid. None of you dipshits really know whether he’s good or not so quit acting like you do.

lmao y’all were the same ones defending the Shawn Watson hire and the Beck hire. You’ll rationalize and defend anything. We could hire a dead goat and you’d be defending it

And many of them will now post about how pissed they are that OSU hired him and we didn't. Because when OSU hires him it will be because they know something and her really is a great coordinator and Tom was to stupid to know that and hire him first.

    TL:DR Surly gonna Surly

Who is saying that? If seen multiple post like this, please tell me who is saying that they’d be upset with Tom if Ash is hired by OSU?? You guys are ridiculous. It’s a shitty hire no matter if OSU wants him or not. Tim Beck was once employed by OSU and called plays. He’s still a shitty play caller.

From Burton via @satyanash (I don't care if it's already been posted, p100 needs something real on it)

Where am I at on the coordinator hires? I began with 50-50 odds on Graham Harrell verses the field. Perhaps I’m moving more to the less than 50-percent range, say 40-60. At the same time, I feel like it’s becoming more and more likely that Chris Ash will be the Horns’ next DC. I’d move those odds up to 90-10.

Herman has got to go. This is getting ridiculous. Chris Ash is just as shitty a hire for DC as Time Beck was for OC when Herman first got here. Tom’s digging his grave

been thinking more about Herman's 10-80-10 philosophy (which he took from Urban). it seems like a really bad idea to tell a group of 18-22 year old kids that are putting their long-term health on the line that 90% of them are either just ok or malcontents. put yourself in the crowd that's receiving that message...are you looking to go to bat for the guy relaying that message?

Everyone wants to believe they are the 10%. Or that they will eventually be the 10%

Amazing part is Herman recognizes it was a problem. And continued to allow him to do it. At some point shouldn’t he have stepped in and said no more DB blitzing from 15 yards beyond the LOS

I mean it seems like he did. We did it much less after the first half of the season

We're 9 days from NSD1.  Most of the players in the class have been pretty vocal about the fact that they're all UT even after the coaching change.

I’m going but what CTJ has said and he is more locked into this than any 9.95. I guess we will see. I’m willing to bet money that if our recruits don’t have a good idea of who is going to be the OC/DC by NSD1 you will see multiple flips of our high ranking recruits.

  16. 1 minute ago, RGBIII said:

Honestly don’t think anyone knows anything. My guess nothing is resolved before NSD1. If GH was for sure staying at USC they would be shouting it from the rooftops

Our recruiting class is going to be absolutely wrecked if this is the case. We will lose a ton of our best recruits if we do not fill these positions before NSD1. This would be one of the worst calculations of the Tom Herman era and would seal his fate if he doesn’t get this resolved before then. I’m confident he knows this

Kinda crazy and a little sad we are desperately fighting over the former offensive coordinator from the University of North Texas. Herman was supposed to be the offensive genius but has delivered nothing but shit and concussions.

Remind me again where Lincoln Riley was before OU?

I'll take Harrell, with the clause in his contract that if he mentions Michael Crabtree or the 2008 game he forfeits all salary.

Or just one quick kick in the nuts from Gideon so we can all move on
