  1. Elections matter.  I think we much better off keeping the current system in place.  Much more likelihood of an aging dotard getting the message and retiring (or being impeached) from the Supreme Court than from the Presidency.

  2. 5 minutes ago, Dick Tremayne said:

I'm always curious why no one talks about the fact that there is nothing requiring only nine Supreme Court justices. You would think that the easiest way to fix this (from the left's perspective) would be for the democrats to hold the presidency, house, and senate, and pass legislation to increase the number to 11.

  3. I'm leaving open the possibility that there may be one or two Texas Republicans who may not be lazy Trump apologists.  There were many Republicans I agreed with and mostly agreed with before Trump, so I'll leave open the possibility that their own foibles may be unrelated to Trump.

May not matter in terms of the election but matters a bit to me for the purpose of this thread.

  4. Well, lots of Germans intermarried with Mexicans.

It's why Mexican music is polka based, and sucks compared to the rest of Latin American music.

And my wife pissed off the whole family by rooting for Germany after Mexico won, because "she felt sorry for Germany".

Who the fuck feels sorry for German soccer?

  5. The fact that John Sayles Lone Star only has two mentions means some of you need to fucking see Lone Star.

    Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo.

Sayles' movies are small but I'd put this one up there with the best Texas films easily.

Kristofferson, McConahey, Chris Cooper.  Bad ass little movie.

  6. Holy fuck Orca is a poster child for blind, one sided stupidity.

When I was in undergrad, we had a roommate who set his alarm for super early, hit snooze a billion fucking times, and then leave with the fucking alarm still on.  One day the 3rd roommate told him that if he didn't stop doing this shit he was going to throw the alarm clock out the fucking window.

The asshole roommate, who is likely Orca, said that if he did that then he (Orca) would have the right to kill the roommate who threw the clock out the window.

Fuck you Orca.  Everyone always hated you.

  8. The issue is whether 1) she is crazy and 2) if I'm an asshole for being put out by this strange behavior.

And she knows I'll eat most of the chocolate peanut butter before she gets around to it anyway.

  9. Wife says she is going to pick up some ice cream.  Can you get chocolate for me I say?

She comes back with Chocolate with Peanut Butter.   I thought you'd like this, she says.  She admits they had chocolate but she got the chocolate with Peanut butter instead.

Am I wrong to say "wtf"?

  10. The idea behind this is just to identify your voting district and then identify the candidates you think will best send a message to stop the Trumpism is federal and state government.  We all have our own definition of Trumpism.  To me, Trumpism is just a generally ugly anti-intellectual celebration of asshole-ishness and idiocracy.  What I'm fighting isn't what I think are traditional conservative ideals - Trump has no ideals - but rather the gutlessness of his active and passive supporters.

Please feel to add your own districts.  I'm very uneducated on state politics and would be interested in at least finding out who is running in some of the other races.

If you can, list your general location and then the districts if you know them.

    Lake Highlands (NE Dallas)

US Senate - Texas - Beto O'Rourke v. Ted Cruz

Vote Against:  Ted Cruz - Votes in line with Trump’s position Trump 91.9%

Challenger Beto O’Rourke votes in line with Trump's position 29.6%

Gen thought:  Cruz is a recognized asshole, and Trump's bitch.

US Congress - District 32 - Colin Allred v. Representative Pete Sessions

Vote Against - Representative Pete Sessions - Votes in line with Trump 98.8%

    https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/pete-sessions/

Challenger Colin Allred is a former NFL player and Dallas lawyer (Baylor undergrad, UC Berkeley law).

Gen thought: Sessions has been doing this awhile and doesn't seem interested in doing anything more than rubber stamping whatever comes his way.  Allred seems to be a solid guy who is appears to be much more interested in reaching out to all the demographics of the district.

Texas State Senate District 16--Senator Don Huffines v. Nathan Johnson

    Vote Against Don Huffines.

Challenger is Nathan Johnson, Dallas Attorney (UT Law School)

Gen thought:  Huffines is one of the conservative Texas state senate wackos who supported the Bathroom Bill, etc. Don't really like Texas politicians who aren't willing to have an open mind on immigration.  A Texas politician who doesn't appreciate the immigration dilemma in Texas is like a man who doesn't appreciate dogs.

Texas State House District 114 -- John Turner v. Lisa Luby Ryan

    Vote against:  Lisa Luby Ryan

Challenger:  John Turner - Dallas lawyer (Harvard and Yale Law School)

Gen thoughts:  A Lisa Luby Ryan volunteer approached me on my front lawn during the primaries and started bad-mouthing the incumbent - Republican Jason Villalba - for not being conservative enough.  Her campaign targeted Villalba for his support of actually having a somewhat open mind about gun violence. Again, not so much focused on the particular issue but more how she approached the issue during the primary.
