  1. The worst aspect of the Liberty Mutual ads is that they have someone complaining about only getting 3/4 of the cost of a new car when they crash theirs. Then the fine print admits that they offer full replacement coverage-but only if you opt for it (with a few more bucks up front).  I'm pretty sure most car insurer offer full replacement coverage if you pay for it.

  2. My favorite take on agy insanity is the burial of their dead collie mascots.  They put them in the ground standing up, facing the football stadium.  Then they fill in the dirt.  They hung a plugged-in scoreboard on the side of the stadium, facing where the dogs are buried--specifically so the dogs can keep track of the scores during games.

This is wrong on so many levels: 1. The dog is dead, so it cannot see the scoreboard.  2. The dog is underground, another reason it cannot see. 3. Even if the dog were alive, it cannot read or comprehend numbers; and it would have to be above ground even if it gave a damn and looked at the scoreboard.

    Can anyone explain this?

  3. I've eaten 3 or 4 times at Arthur Bryant's in KC and it wasn't actually bad, but the seasoning was kinda bland-- maybe overboard on the paprika, just no whang.  I might choose it over a Rudy's, but it would be nice to have the choice.

  4. Didn't want to drag it out too long.  Walked back to my hotel; everyone was walking in the street not the sidewalks.  I saw Gene Hackman coming toward me from about 30' so I had a chance to think.  As we passed each other I said "Poseidon Adventure" ( a 70's Hackman movie about a tidal wave-induced by an earthquake turning an ocean liner upside down). He laughed pretty hard but kept moving.  Got a bus to the airport (we didn't go on any overpasses) and tried to sleep a few hours on a bench somewhere in the lobby.  Flew out about 2 PM the next day.

There is a Henry's Hunan at 924 Sansome and another at the intersection of Grant and Green.  If someone were paying for my meal and I had a choice between Henry's and the French Laundry, I'd take Henry's.

  5. Was in SFO, in a Chinese Restaurant when the Loma Prieto earthquake hit in 1989.  I sat there feeling queasy, when I realized I was in SFO and my plate started rattling on the table.  The restaurant never reopened, but there are several other locations for Henry's Hunan in the city.  The street outside,  Kearny, was pitching like the deck on a ship. Looming back down Kearny toward downtown, there was a huge dust cloud that came up suddenly; I was pretty sure the facade had fallen off some building.  When it calmed down, I went back in to pay for the meal, but the Chinese guy would not let me give them the money.

  6. Bought a paperback The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (1953) by David Embury when I was in Law School.  The classic work on mixing stuff and it is cited by many drink books I've gotten since then.  I spent the weeks studying for the Bar Exam trying to perfect an Old Fashioned (usually at the end of the day).  One or two tsp. simple sugar, one to three dashes Angostura Bitters.  Stir this until bitters are dissolved.  Add 1 oz. Bourbon (it is always Bonded with Embury) and stir again.  Add cracked iced and fill glass to within 3/8" of the top of the glass. Add a maraschino cherry and then a twist of lemon peel (using a vegetable peeler, take off a strip of the peel of the lemon without any pith and squeeze this so the lemon oil in the peel spritzes the top of the drink).  He doesn't mention the size of the glass, but we have some crystal glasses that are specifically for Old Fashioned drinks.

Just out of curiosity we've ordered OF's at bars and restaurants over the last 40 years, but never had one as good.
