Nice. How many conference titles and national title shots did that get us?

I love Sam. I want him to succeed. That doesn't mean we need to be revisionist about his career at Texas. He was dealt a relatively shitty hand and he handled it fine. If he finds more success at the pro level I'll be ecstatic - I was going nuts for every one of his big plays down the stretch today.

I think some of you underestimate how deeply I bleed for Texas football simply because I didn't go to UT. You will never offend me by taking shots at my Alma mater. I don't regret where I went. I also don't have anything other than undying, emotionally unhealthy support for the football program at the University of Texas.

This is what I'm wearing today and it was just what I grabbed in my closet that was clean.

Insult SMU all you want and question my allegiance all you want - I know who I am and where my heart lies at the end of the day. I had reasons for not attending UT and I'll be honest some days I think about what if. But most of the time I don't because I got away from my home town and had the best 3.5 years of my life.

    cross posting from gun thread:

Going to get my soon to be 8 yr old a shotgun for his birthday.  I'd rather get him a 20 ga just thinking long term but he's a little guy and is really really wanting a .410 so we'll probably go with that (and I do think a .410 can be a fun gun to hold on to).  He's also really wanting a side by side and I see that there's a .410 side by side Yildiz at Academy.  Any thoughts on this brand?  The reviews seem pretty good but there aren't a ton of them out there.  Any thoughts on / experience with Yildiz?

I've got nice guns, shit guns, and everything in between.  Seriously, my 12 ga. Yildiz over under may be my favorite.  Affordable, reliable, fairly attractive.

  3. Just got back, and heading down again next week.  The restaurant closures sucked, but apparently that changes Friday.  Was pretty damn crowded over the weekend around Bob Hall Pier.  Someone tell me how/where to fish down there...I'm a fresh water guy and have no clue.  I throw shrimp out and get sunburned while my girl gets a tan.

  4. Headed to Denver with the girlfriend early Friday morning and returning Tuesday.  1 or 2 days of hiking will definitely be on the agenda, but looking for any other "must do/see" recommendations.  Staying in Golden with a rental car.  Any advice appreciated.

  5. I feel you brother.  I hadn't gone on a sales call or attended a meeting without having some amount of alcohol in my system for years.  Thought I was highly functional, but I just finalized my divorce yesterday, am closing on the sell of my beloved home next week, etc.  That shit will overtake you mentally, emotionally, and physically.  It's almost funny, but the first step I took was posting about my situation on Surly.  I obviously have a long way to go, but I have lost 10 freaking pounds already.  I haven't been worried about getting pulled over in a few weeks.  Shit I feel awesome right now.  Just hope it's permanent.  I also talked to some friends who have cleaned up and "confessed" to them which seemed to help.

TBH, I'm glad my wife said something before it got to that point.  I like to drink.  Most of my friends and family like to drink - it's always around.  I love craft beer.  I brew with friends, and have two world class breweries within 20 minutes of my home.  I don't want to never drink again.  But if I didn't slow down and change what I was doing, I might have done something stupid that hurt someone.  I like to drink, but I don't like drinking more than I like being able to sleep at night not carrying that weight and guilt.

I also don't know that I would have been able to do it without therapy.  I needed honest, objective, third party insight about what I was doing, and more importantly WHY I was doing it.  @ztejas if your alcohol use is increasing (like mine was at that point in time - I was drinking less than college, but more than any previous point in my "adult" life), there's probably something driving it, and I'd wager it's better to figure that out sooner than later.

The best example of how it became reflexive was my nightly stop at the gas station on my way home from the farm to pick up a tall boy.  A lot of weeknights that was my only drink.  But for at least a year, I stopped every single day after I left the farm and nursed that baby on the way home.  It was my routine.  I can't remember the last time I stopped at the gas station and grabbed one for the road.  That's just not part of my mental lexicon these days.

I have slowed WAY down since I posted on this thread earlier.  I walked into the convenience store this morning to buy a can of Copenhagen (something else I need to stop) and instinctively walked straight to the beer cooler.  I don't really have any cravings thankfully which I am shocked about, but it made me feel kind of pathetic that I had trained myself to head to the beer without even thinking about it.  Glad I turned around.

  7. Interesting thread.  I had a six pack (abs) at 40 with a hot wife, successful company, and beautiful kids.  At 50 I have gained 70 lbs, am divorcing because my wife doesn't want to hang around any more, and am selling my house due to the divorce.  I drink every damn day and look and feel like shit.  I would double my pay if I didn't drink.  I'm going to try to do something tomorrow because I'm already several drinks in...but actually motivated not to have any more tonight.

I'll tell you about A&M Commerce. Let's get the bad out of the way. The one bad thing is that we're in the A&M system. Also, it seems like John Sharp and all those other cock suckers are trying to receive aid for Jimbo’s contract because I keep receiving “donate now” emails from the alumni association.

Now the good: We are formally known as East Texas State University and most of our alumni still refer to the school as ETSU. Even for Homecoming and Senior day we wear our old ETSU uniforms. We definitely are NOT anything like aggy. True fact, most of our alumni, especially the ones that graduated when it was ETSU will fight you for calling them aggies. We are Lions. True story, a few of the older alumni I spoke with told me about receiving emails asking if they wanted to change their diplomas from ETSU to A&M Commerce. Their response, "I didn't go to A&M Commerce, I went to ETSU."

The university first opened its doors as East Texas Normal College in Cooper, Texas, but when the site was destroyed by fire in 1894, the university moved to its present day location. When the state of Texas purchased the campus in 1917, the name changed to East Texas State Normal College. Then in 1923, the school was renamed East Texas State Teachers College. Graduate education entered the curriculum in 1935, so in 1957 the state legislature, recognizing that the university had broadened from teacher education alone, changed the name again to East Texas State College. Following the inauguration of the first doctoral program in 1962, the name changed once more to East Texas State University in 1965. The name changed to Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1996, when the university joined the Texas A&M system. My guess is that we joined to receive better funding, publicity, etc. However, we are the second largest school in the A&M system with about 12-13,000 students.

Most of our alumni are teachers and educators and our student body is mainly made up of kids from East Texas (especially from the towns of Greenville, Commerce, Royse City, Sulphur Springs and Paris), DFW, and northeastern Louisiana. After they graduate, most of them (I've noticed) move back to DFW, or somewhere out in East Texas.

For sports wise, unlike aggy, we actually have recognized national championships for football (they only have 1, we have 2). Winning in 2017 was our first NCAA title. Our 1972 title was when we were a member of the NAIA, but it IS RECOGNIZED by the NCAA. We used to be terrible at football until Colby Carthel took over as head coach in 2013 and took our program who finished 1-9 the previous season to 7-5, then won the conference 3 straight years before finally winning the natty in 2017 with a 4th consecutive 10 win season. When it comes to football, Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, and Texas A&M Kingsville consider us rivals because we're in the A&M system, but our biggest rival over the decade has been Midwestern State. Over the last 5 seasons, it always comes down to our game against them for deciding the conference champion.

Our rodeo, volleyball and basketball teams are usually forces to be reckoned with and we have the number 1 start up softball program in Division 2 history. Our athletics department is committed to providing the Best in Class student-athlete experience and we take that seriously.

Since Carthel took over in 2013, we always  sing “Turn Out the Lights” by Willie Nelson

We are Lions, We are Champions. Who are we? The ones that fight for old ET!

After wins we sing "When the Roll is Called up Yonder", not Turn Out the Lights...one of the best traditions in college football.  Carthel did not start that.  It has been going on since Ernest Hawkins.

Lol fair enough. When we joined The A&M system we had a chance to name our school East Texas A&M. The reason why our school is named A&M Commerce is because the president at that time wanted the school to be more associated with the town and also so that people would know where it was located.

Jerry Morris was a friend of mine.  East Texas A&M was the overwhelming favorite.  The jackasses in CS made the decision to name it TAMU-C.  Always ETSU to me.

  10. Played at ET (Commerce).  Played against Bailey, Sherman, Randle, etc.  Beat their asses 3 out 4 years.  If ET had a little more offense they would go back to back.  Defense is legit.  If they can get by Tarleton they may do it again, but TSU is tough.

At deer lease (wife off somewhere between AZ & Utah)

Dry-aged ribeye (greeled), sauteed green beans with onion and bacon, boiled , mashed & baked white potatoes with green onions, Falfurrias butter, minced garlic, bacon, S&P and a topping of cheddar cheese.

and my 3rd share of a handle of Dewar's.

That's how you do it right there.  Had a great lasagna and caprese, but would have traded that for a steak at the lease in a heartbeat.

That is insane!!! I was in HS in San Antonio when that happened and that was HUGE news.

I was there that night too.  Started the day off jumping on a bus and delivered to some party/makeshift bar in someone's backyard.  Was in the same club as he was later that night.

Where did you go to school?

Yes, our football (foster, ray crockett, keeton smiley, etc.)and baseball teams 84-87'ish should have produced at least 1 champ (i guess the 90 baseball team counted).  Nied was a childhood buddy of mine, I grew up in duncanville as a kid...we had some badass little league teams.  Greg Ostertag was my neighbor growing up.

Irving High.  You guys beat us 52-21 I think.  Also, I think you had another really good pitcher...Moskrey maybe?

With:  Barry Foster (arkie, steelers).  However, i did play "against" him a lot when we went O vs D.  He trucked my ass a few times and i still feel the pain.  He was as big in high school as he was in the pros.  Our team had a handful of future pro's (Duncanville).

Against: Joe Bowden (LB, N. Mesquite, played 9 yrs in the pros).  I played against a lot of future pro's but that dude was the one i remember most.

If we did a baseball one, i would have a page to myself.  I played in the hayday of DFW baseball (late 80's, early 90's).

We must have played against each other in football and baseball.  I can't believe Duncanville didn't win state in 86.  We played Plano too, and Dville easily had the better athletes.  Foster was a beast.  David Neid was great and almost untouchable in baseball.  In college played against Johnny Bailey, Heath Sherman, John Randle (NFL HOF), Pierce Holt, Eric Lynch, and with about 10-12 guys who at least had a cup of coffee in the league...including Curtis Buckley one of the biggest hitters in the NFL through the 90's.
