  1. Well, my weakness is disgusting and I went in for one. I’d love to live in a world where WFP was plentiful at MSRP, but I don’t see that happening. I haven’t popped the cork yet but will report back once I do.

  2. Sipping on some Little Book 4 tonight. Just my 2nd pour so far, but I am picking up what it’s putting down. Getting caramel, creme brûlée, and some nuttiness out of it. I haven’t had any of the previous chapters, but this one is great.

  3. I know that some view the use of MGP as something of a crutch, and I get that up to a point. MGP can be delicious, and they play a really important role in both meeting consumer demand and enabling new entrants to the category to get on their feet sooner. I don’t have a hang up on MGP in principle, and for me, my interest is often a function of how unique the finishing process is and how transparent the label is about where the juice comes from.

Magnus Cigar has been high on my personal list of things I want to try for awhile. It’s a blend of 11 and 18 year old bourbons, which is a totally different animal than using 4-6 year old MGP like several others are doing. Everything I read about it says it will be right up my alley, so I was stoked to find it.

  4. Anyone have a good tip on a liquor store to beg for Birthday Bourbon (in Austin)?  I just don't buy enough to be a VIP anywhere, sadly.
I already called the place to not be named on 183 and he's going to decide whether to sell it or give it away (in store tasting as he did last year) based on how many bottles he gets shipped.

My advice? Prepare your anus and get ready to pay secondary or go without. You’re not exactly alone in wanting that bottle and I don’t see anyone offering up a magical honey hole where they just sell unicorn bottles willy nilly. My guess is that every bottle heading for Austin already has a name attached to it by whatever shops are lucky enough to get an allocation.

Sucks, but that’s just how it works now.
  5. For those in Austin,
Deb's just got their Woodinville Cask Strength store pick in.
    Go get it.
The couple of DFW picks I have are incredible, this one isn't too far off on barrel number.

Good looking out. Swung by and went in for one.

  6. I picked up the Smoke X4 from Thermoworks and it’s awesome. The range on the remote unit is damn good. I was doing a smoke in a cul de sac in the neighborhood and was able to get nearly a half mile away on my golf cart before it lost the connection to the base unit.

It’s super easy to use, and I prefer that experience to having to mess around with WiFi and an app. I picked up a few of the 2.5” straight probes that are ideal for briskets during the 15% off site wide sale recently.

  7. Local store has 2 bottles of Weller FP for $399 each. Smdh

A buddy saw a bottle at a shop in Pflugerville that was priced at $700 yesterday.

Weller mania is in full effect.
  8. Struck out on my goals for today so said fuck it and took a flyer on this guy:

If it’s good, I may put down the whole bottle... been that kinda week!

I sure think it’s good, but it’s pretty unique. Feel free to send me your bottle if it doesn’t work for you.
  9. Well, I'll be drinking the "best bourbon in the world" tonight. EHT Single Barrel.
I had a couple of pours of Bowman Single Barrel to wash the taste of Old Tub out of my mouth. Bowman wasn't as good as I remember it being.

I had a similar experience with Bowman single barrel awhile back. Hadn’t touched it in awhile and I tasted a lot more of the barrel than I remembered tasting in the past. Not sure if my palate has changed that much or if the extra oxidation changed the flavor that much. Possibly some combination of the two.
  10. EHT Single Barrel was a somewhat easy find in 2017 and 2018. The rug got pulled in 2019.

I still think the EHT Rye is harder to find. The Barton rye heads gobble it up. I regret not buying it every time I’ve seen it.

I got one bottle of Rye in May, and passed one up that was bundled with a bottle of champagne two weeks ago. I’ll likely regret passing on that one given this development, but it made sense at the time.
  11. Which distillery does Bardstown does source from?

Several. Most believe the Discovery is a blend of Beam or Wild Turkey 10 year, Barton 12 year, and Heaven Hill 14 year.

The Prisoner is believed to be from Dickel.

I haven’t seen any guesses on the older bourbon in Fusion, but 60% of that bottle has their own juice in it.

  12. I saw the Bardstown Chateau de Laubade at a Spec’s in Houston in Friday. A lot of people like Fusion, reviews are all over the place on Bardtown’s other products. I’ll probably break down and buy a bottle of Fusion at some point.

I’ve had Discovery, Prisoner, and Fusion all within the same week. I rank them in that order. Fusion has a great nose on it, but the juice itself doesn’t deliver on the promise of the smell. It by no means bad, but it’s thin with a short finish and just not remarkable or complex in any way.

Discovery is damn good. It’s a big brawny bourbon that hits all the classic notes. It’s not breaking new ground, but it’s blended very well and hits all of the notes that I love in a bourbon.

The Prisoner is something unique given the time it spent in the wine barrel. I’m a big fan of the Prisoner wine, so this one really works for me even though there are some notes there that you typically wouldn’t expect to find.
  13. I don't want to switch, but I want a system I can tell to arm the house or stream the camera to the TV and it works.
I have one Google Home, a couple of Chromecasts to start.  I have one Honeywell smart thermostat too.  Not much o start but I don't want to go down an incompatibility road if I can avoid it.

Amazon + Ring will get you there. I have all Amazon gear, and it works great. Setting up routines is a real nice feature. I can say Alexa good goodnight and all my bedroom lights turn off, TV turns off, and Ring alarm is armed to home mode. That’s all with one utterance.

If you add Fire TV, every TV in your house can view any cam you want to see. It’s pretty simple to set up and works well.

Alexa isn’t a good as GH when it comes to native search queries, but I don’t find myself needing that nearly as often as I need to control something with my voice.
  14. I absolutely agree. The won't increase price because they're scared of alienating their base or something.

That may be part of it, but it’s also likely influenced by the role that product scarcity has played in the bourbon boom. I’m sure there are concerns that product being readily available on shelves would decrease the cachet that has driven the craze and increase in demand in the first place. If bro’s out there can’t get a high from scoring a bottle that their buddies can’t, that could have a material impact on purchasing behavior.

I know I’ve been guilty in the past of going into a liquor store to see if they had any “whales”, while completely ignoring quality bottles because I knew that I could get them any time.
