Since the 1980's when in 80-83 Will Clark, Rapheal Palmero, Jeff Brantley, and Bobby Thigpen all played on the same team for MSU, Mississippi State has always been one of the best venues for college baseball.
Texas battled those teams in Omaha in 1981 and in Austin at a Regional in 1983, when the Horns had to come out of the loser's bracket and beat them twice to win it.
Texas went on to win the title in Omaha in 1983. I was fortunate enough to get to see all those games in Austin and in Omaha. Got to know Will Clark and his dad who were from New Orleans. Their bat girls were smoking hot, got to know them and one girl who was the daughter of one of DKR's main assistant coaches Charlie Shira. When Texas won the national championship in 1963, she was born the week of the OU game. Team dedicated the game to her and when they won, they gave the team ball to Coach Shira for her. She still has it. Her dad Coach Shira died from cancer, and they named some facilities at MSU after him.
When Texas won the SWC title in 1981 in football, she called me and asked if I wanted to go to the Cotton Bowl game against Alabama. We went and her connections got us seats right on the fifty-yard line. Texas beat Alabama 14-12, the most memorable play being the "quarterback draw" by Brewer, after he saw the defense and called a time out. Thirty yards untouched up the middle for the score.
Good times back then
