Even though we need to make the coaching change ASAP, part of me thinks Shaka deserves to have to coach next year’s team.

I think this is the most underrated comment on this board.  Picture this, Shakas team comes out pretty hot, with six games won by January 5, and then proceeds to go 3 and about 15 in conference play.  Some of the remaining fans have sacks over their heads, as attendance peaks at just over 2000.  At that point even the most ardent Shaka supporter would have to admit this was true Shaka all along.

Is it worth this? I’m not wishing for this scenario to happen,

but if Shaka doesn’t pull his head out of his ass and start looking for a different job, this total humiliation has about a 90% chance of happening, imo.   If Shakas agent were reading this board and thinking clearly, I think he could be persuaded to encourage Shaka to look elsewhere, and don’t be too picky.  Take the first decent offer that comes with a five year deal, and try to prove you have some coaching ability.  You are still young enough to spend 5 years learning how to coach, and then get another shot at the big time!

If we can see the future, why can’t shaka or his agent?

    do it, do it now.

Wojo?  Shaka?  Poor Al must be rolling over in his grave.

Good reference.  One of my earliest college basketball memories was watching the final game, and Al crying on the bench.  I had never seen a man cry tears of joy before.   That, and then when he was incredibly over the top as the analyst next to Dick Enberg.  My favorite Al saying was “French pastry”....

  3. I listened to the podcast.  Interesting to me:

    1. I had no idea Shaka was so bad at VCU.  They rattled off the numbers to make a strong case VCU should not have even been in the tourney.

    2.  Big mistake saying this isn’t football.  Sounds appealing to me, to think cdc doesn’t need to approach this like football, the idea being in basketball you don’t have to have your new coach lined up before you fire Shaka.  That idea would require cdc to have a certain flexibility, to have multiple approaches in hiring coaches depending upon the sport.

i think cdc is not willing to do that.  I think he wants to employ one consistent method for hiring coaches.  It has evidently worked?

    3.  Will Baker.  Totally forgot about that guy.

    4.  Didn’t quote him, but came close, from Parcells, “You are what you are”   Shaka has shown his ceiling, so many times, imo

there is literally no reason for any Texas fans to attend any basketball game next year, other than family members of players.

i can’t exactly remember, but I think this is how people must have felt at end of year 2 of Weltlichs time, when he was busy tearing down the program, going about 7-21.

I am not optimistic CDC will do the right thing.  I think he lets Shaka more or less control the situation.

  4. Re: Jimmy Sexton and Shaka betting on himself.....whoa, JS is the agent? Adds another layer to this. CDC has his hands full.  JS is gonna call the shots, and imo he will not let Shaka bet on himself.  Too much ego, reputation, whatever u want to call it.

so this is now very simple...CDC says no extension, JS says walk, so Shaka walks.

How quickly can this get done?  I guess we have to wait until the carousel opens a job JS can negotiate.  A five year deal is out there for the “great dude” who can’t coach.  I don’t think Cdc has to do anything other than say the magic words, “no extension under any circumstances at this time.”   JS will take it from there.

Has Shaka had the balls to even mention an extension all season?

It’s earlier in this thread I think.  There is a tweet from a reporter who has info. From a source that said Shaka expects an extension after the year ends.

  6. My fearless forecast, once Shaka knows for sure there is no extension coming, and just for fun CDC tells Shaka the only way to ensure an extension after next year is to have winning season and finish 4th or better in the conference......Shaka will take a long look at next years team and have to decide, is it better to leave now or wait a year?

I remember dickie v....stock up, stock down.  Stock up, leave now while u have a current conf. Tourney champ. On your resume.

stock down, waiting until after a miserable 9-21 season next year.

If Shakas that great guy a bunch of people say he is, he will be smart enough to figure out that his chances of having a winning season and finishing 4th or better next year are about 7 in 100.  He’s not dumb.  He and the agent might try like crazy to work something out, but I don’t think he’s gonna bet on himself.

hopefully it’s a matter of time.

  7. Here from the basketball situation.  When is somebody with a microphone gonna get in CDC's grill to ask him for a "vote of confidence" for Shaka for next year?  And when he says yes, please ask him why!

  8. Ok, it’s been well over 12 hours.  Time for a reality check.  My biggest fear going in was that the team would beat two inferior teams and get hammered in the 3rd game.  Shaka already expected an extension at the end of the season.  Any extension would have prolonged the agony.  Bottom line, ACU did us a HUGE favor not by beating us, but playing so horribly WHILE beating us.

Did they really shoot 30% and beat us?  Yes.  I think that is a record low % for a winning team in the tournament.  If not a record, certainly in the bottom ten.

So even CDC can see the need for change.  The question for me is simple.

Does Shaka have any understanding of his situation?  His reputation can only get worse if he digs in his heels and tries to come back.  He is looking at a 10-20ish record at Texas.  Will have the worst attendance since kaiser bob.

Right now, he might be in the consideration for a job at some places, but his value will dive big-time if he comes back.

Bottom line.  If he has any balls at all, he should start looking for a job somewhere else, maybe an assistant job, whatever, and make this transition easier on himself and his family.   He has the power. If he gets terminated, it’s only because he was too hardheaded, foolish, and unaware of his surroundings to do the right thing.  Btw, if that happens, he proves he’s not a “good dude” like many people here are saying. It would prove the opposite.

    Coach, do the right thing!!

  9. Can we all agree that just about any decent coach could be considered a good recruiter at Texas?  Who was the last coach at Texas who had trouble recruiting.. Kaiser Bob?  Seriously.  The university, the city of Austin, they do a good job by themselves, imo.

  10. It’s so painfully obvious to fans, the firing is needed, but I’m thinking cdc is just relieved he does not have to give an extension.

what are we looking at next year, 10 wins with Shaka?  Could we possibly find anybody worse?

  11. To me, there are two subjects:  a. Shakas coaching process as exhibited on the court,....b. Performance of the team

a....Shakas refusal/inability to have our players drive right at the star player with 3 fouls early in 2nd half of yesterday’s game tells me all I need to know.  He had the entire half to make one adjustment.  The game would have been essentially over, because if we drive on him and he backs off, we score a layup every time.  If he plays hard D, he gets his 4th foul after about 3 or 4 drives maximum..he sits....16 minutes or so left in game and we have an 8 point lead, lead blows up to 12+ While he sits.    Osu would have inserted him back in the game.  Smart coach repeats process and he fouls out or gives up many layups and we lead by 20 with 5 minutes left to play.  Game over, early.

    b. Performance of the team....not counting G. Brown..and Ramey.......A+

    shaka gets the credit.

btw, extension talk not going away.  I maintain my position.  When we win the 3rd game, there is going to be a line forming from the left full of ADs with extremely lucrative 5 year deals.

You are cdc.  What do you do? Btw, will the line be just as long if the reasons we lose game 4 have a lot to do with coaching?
