Not sure why so many people think shooting percentage is a foolproof way to decide what game is better. Shitass defense can also lead to high shooting percentages.

Most games discussed here were awesome and it's all just going to be eye of the beholder opinion in the end anyway.

It’s not foolproof...but when u see ...example nova shooting 79% against one of the best defenses of all time, in the championship game, that proves it was the greatest final four game ever, in many people’s minds.

Now look at last night.  There was plenty of great d.  Look at that block on the dunk attempt.  Sure there were plenty of open looks, but there was much d happening.  Also, give credit to the offenses last night...ball movement what a concept! Finally, look at the compared shooting %. 59 to 58.  Both teams were on fire...look at the low turnovers.  Both teams had their A+ game on display, at the same time, in a final 4 game, which I think  is so rare that it deserves consideration as one of the all-time great games.

  2. Just looked at boxes...duke had better shooting %, but Kentucky’s was much worse than duke, about 65 to 57....tonight we had 59 to 58, much closer, both great numbers...duke Kentucky had 31 turnovers, tonight there were 19...much cleaner game tonight.  Only thing I cannot find is number of lead changes, tonight I read almost 20...hard to imagine more than that.

Both games had one OT and last second shot.  Imo a half court shot has a much lower chance of going in than Laetners shot.

Imo the only area the duke game comes out ahead is Duke FG %. Most items are push, but this game tonight was more even, thus a closer game.  take TOV...10 to 9....Duke game 19 to 12.   Does it get any better than 59 to 58 fg %?

So we have a tougher game winning shot after a closer better played game in a final 4 game as opposed to a regional final...

    This game was better.

    Recency bias much?

I backed off that already, when I thought of the famous Villanova-Georgetown game.  Imo this is number 2, ahead of Duke Kentucky.  How many lead changes in tonight’s game?  How many in duke Kentucky?

Also, this one had OT and a last second shot. Duke Kentucky..? Don’t remember, did it have both? Go look at shooting %, which better, tonight’s or duke- Kentucky?  I think objective data proves this was better game.

It was a long time ago, and I was a kid, but I recall that game being a little on the ugly side.  Great upset? Absolutely.   Work of art?  Not really.

Yes, it was a work of art, because Gtown had the most intimidating defense in b-ball, that year, probably in the decade. To shoot 79 % against them was a miracle. No exaggeration.

Duke Kentucky was pretty decent, doesn't look like you were old enough though.

I watched Laetner receive the baseball pass, as he was lightly guarded by 2 cats players.  Laetner took his sweet time as he pivoted and then launched the ball from beyond the top of the key.

Your extension theory was always absurd even though you just kept spewing it ad nauseum. You’re also wrong about the extension. Perrin extended Shaka, not CDC.

Ok, I got it backwards, CDC extended Herman.

  7. I am very happy to be here to take the L.  True, I am the guy who thought there was a real chance Shaka would be extended, in large part because he was already extended with mediocre results before, by who? CDC.  CDC has officially turned the dept. around with the two big hires.  He is not done, imo, until two things happen:

    1. ALL coaches employed by Texas  know and buy in 100% that there is accountability....he’s almost there already.

    2. Plonsky is no longer associated with the University of Texas.  This is a very low priority item in my view.  fearless forecast from faraway is she retires before Moody opens.

A huge bonus item would be doing something to fix the LHN.  I haven’t seen it in years, but all I read here is that the programming sucks.

It is still kind of hard to believe that CDC may have fixed both football and basketball fo4 the next 10 years.

  8. I can't get over the contrast.  Shaka just gave us six years with 0 tourney wins, and got extended.  Beard has never LOST a first-round tourney game!????  There can be no doubt, this is incredibly good.  Assuming he keeps up his streak of never losing a first round tourney game, he will be here until he wants to leave, probably 15-20 years.

We owe Abilene Christian far more than a fruit basket, for sure.

I have no issue with the 1 year extension per tournament make. It’s just money and we have plenty of it

If he’s the guy and he does what he’s expected to do, it’ll work out. If not, then COME ON - if Chris Beard can’t succeed at Texas, we may as well not field a fucking program bc it’s cursed to fail.

Are we saying every year he makes the tourney he gets extra year?  I would change that slightly.  Every year u win a tourney game u get extra year.  Some people would say make him get to sweet 16 to earn extra year.

I think you make a move on Musselman, even if its just to spite Arkansas which will please redass BMDs. But also leverage Beard.

Musselman makes 2.5 per. Float an interview and ballpark figure with him and see Beard’s agent soften.

Yes! Yes!! This dude is available at 3. something I bet.  Who would be unhappy with this guy?  He should be in the top 3 I would think.

  11. Derka, will you please talk about Paul Westhead and his philosophy? I think he called it the system.  He worked his plan so well, he took some recruits that were mostly underachieving or underrated and took them to an incredibly high level.  Then he duplicated the system in the WNBA, winning a title.  To me, the strange part is that nobody copied his plan. Why?

How well would the system work in today’s college game? 3 pointers? All u can eat.  Get in shape for the next leve? Check.  Work on your rebounding and outlet passing game? Plenty to go around.

    thanks man.

  12. Speaking of teams from Texas, yesterday I rewatched the dunkathon game, uh vs Louisville.  Remember, this was in high altitude Albuquerque.   I bet the NCAA never schedules a final four in high altitude again.  Bobby Knight was interviewed at halftime, and he claimed none of the athletes  were suffering from the altitude...so billy packer heard this and made a huge point of showing Knight he was wrong in the 2nd half.

Packer had no dog in this fight on the floor, because he was a biased cheerleader for the Acc.  LU was in MCAC, according to internet. I think all those years CBS had the wrong guy as color.  Remember, packer and Al McGuire were part of a 3 man team for a time at NBC alongside Dick Enberg.  Al was the man with unbridled enthusiasm, fun sayings, etc.  Al should have been the #1.

Anyway, they showed players receiving oxygen on the bench, so obviously there was an issue.  Made me think of poor guy Lewis on the following Monday night.  He’s 61 years old, has worked his whole career to get to this point, and his much more athletic team has the lead in the 2nd half.  His strongest most athletic player, Akeem, is suffering from the altitude and needs oxygen.

He has to decide whether to keep the gas pedal on the floor while Akeem sits and risk losing more players to lack of oxygen, or back off, slow it down, buy time so Akeem can get back in the game.  Meanwhile, Nc state loves the game slower.  Played right into their hands.

To me, bottom line is had that game been played in normal altitude, Uh wins.  I definitely want uh winning this year over Baylor.

Armybrat might. That was in 1933, before there was an NCAA tournament, and was awarded retroactively. Nowadays we know who the national champion is as soon as the game is over. Kentucky was also awarded a national championship that year. Which is fine. I never really had a problem with multiple national champions in college football, either. (Except after the creation of the BCS the AP had no business awarding a championship to USC that one year. That was indefensible.)

Dude, you don’t even Texas western?  Late 1960s...,Would change it’s name to become UTEP.

  14. Here to say thank you Shaka for making the correct decision.  I posted the other day that I thought Shaka could make his life much easier by going ahead and looking for a job.  I didn't quite expect such a quick move, but this was the correct decision.  CDC looks like gold at this point.  Now get somebody really good, who can develop players! The recruiting will mostly take care of itself.
