It was more a comment about Bama being a step down from any reasonable high school education.

I'd imagine most HS football players think they're headed to the NFL, but in their case it's a near certainty that's the case.  Unless either of them is an elite student that NFL degree is likely the complete focus.

We all loved our time as students at Texas. We're all nostalgic about Colt and Vince.

Block that stuff, and put yourself in the shoes of an elite high school player for 2021. Have you worked hard and sacrificed all of your young life so you can go lose to Baylor, TCU and Iowa State?

I'm disappointed just like everyone else, but the logic in choosing Bama right now is solid.  Tommy likely had a committable offer with Bama until signing day.  I'm not convinced it would be the same for James.  Conversely, it would seem both would have committable offers here through signing day and would also appear they'd be welcomed should they elect to transfer down the line.  Bird in hand with an elite program while your safety net almost assuredly remains in tact long enough to figure out if Bama is the right fit.

As for Herman and Co., they need to play this the same way Helton did Bru.  Don't disparage or burn any bridges.  It's poor form and doesn't provide any benefit.  Play the long game and see what happens.  Meanwhile, coach up the guys on campus, start winning consistently at a high level and put more guys in the NFL.  And sure wouldn't hurt if the powers that be took a long look at our membership in the B12...

So what's the story on what happened with Savion Byrd? Obviously our on-the-field product wasn't particularly attractive last year but I thought I remembered us being his leader as of last summer.

Not sure what to think about the Hagen hire, but he might not be a bad recruiter. They've signed 14 DL in the last 3 cycles and he was the primary recruiter for most of them. A lot of mid 3 stars but many had multiple offers from comparable schools.

Malik gave him a thumbs up.  Believe he recruited him while at A&M, so there's that.

I'm sure Perrin didn't handle it well because in the end he was an amateur AD.

It is distressing that we weren't able to land at least a big name coach.  The timing was bad, for one thing.  For another, we actually have to compete for recruits in the state of Texas now.  Our facilities and player-training tech were way behind.  I don't think there were that many coaches anxious to follow Garrido's and Gus' footsteps in a program that had fallen behind in many ways.

Late-stage Dodds-Plonsky syndrome, followed by a couple of years of NBA leadership, really, really fucked us in the ass.

CDC has probably done about as well as could be expected so far, because he really inherited a mess.  Hopefully, he has us in a sort of steady state from which he can be a real AD, not a triage specialist, and get us back to winning.

Agreed.  At least moving forward we have an above average AD who should be able to execute a proper coaching search should the need arise.  No clue if Pierce will turn it around this year or not, but if not and a change needs to be made I don't think it'll be the same debacle as last time.  As for Shaka, that one seems done and will soon be another data point in addition to Floreal and M. White in terms of CDCs coach/hiring acumen.  So far, so good with the first two.

He's a good coordinator so far. Not much of a recruiter, but that's more for the assistants anyway.

I think we're all going to end up very pleased with the Yurcich hire vs. the possibility of Harrell.

I always thought the pierce hire was a weird hire for our baseball program.

Pierce was somewhere around the 10th choice to be the coach.  Perrin got played by pretty much every agent representing a college baseball coach of any significance and the HC from Tulane was the only one truly biting.  The whole thing was ridiculous.

He was talking about me.  I have no idea where he came to the conclusion that I was defending herman.  IIRC, I was the only one that openly opposed his hiring in the first place.  That was not well accepted.  I've never liked the peckerhead, and wanted a coaching search.  But recruiting, who else would you hire, and "he beat ou at Houston" was the song of the day.

Anyway, I just asking as to why our former coaches seemed to have no problems finding new jobs.  We seem to not be all that happy about some of our new coaching hires.  Somebody posted that UT was paying 95% of their salary. OK...that makes sense I guess.  I wonder if we would hire a recently fired coach that failed miserably if we got a 95% discount.  However, I was in no way showing support for herman or any of the former coaches.

    Neg away...…………….

Pretty sure the only coach we let go who had any remaining years on his contract was TO.  The rest were under one year deals.  Also wouldn't characterize it as these coaches having no problems finding jobs.  All of them eventually did, but only TO and Naivar ended up with anything close to the same level.

No idea. They were planning on holding spots for a GT or two all along. That could be as few as 19 guys in the class or as many as 23.

Guess there's still some faint hope Savion Williams might make it in this weekend.  And a possible backup plan in Edric Whitely for Rakestraw if his visit falls through.  Should make for an interesting next 4-5 days.  At this point, as long as Collins signs I'll call it good.  Hoping for more, but he's the critical piece imo.

Looking good on Collins and Dixon heading into the final weekend.

Playing from behind on Umanlymessianicman. Apparently the allure of eventually transferring from Gainesville is quite potent.

Rosco Rickshaw is a toss-up before the visit.

Anyone else in play at this point?

A kid getting cold feet and flipping to a school because of coaching turmoil isn't really something to lay at the feet of Drayton. A kid having a life threatening stroke last year that affected our depth really isn't his fault either. He did his job this year, he just needs to do it again next year. If JWhit can come back healthy it won't make a shit anyway between him, Ingram and Bijan.

    - Fedora was at Baylor in the early/mid '90s (under Teaff and Reedy).  As a team, Baylor was pretty mediocre then.  And that was a quarter of a century ago.

    - The only other stint he had in the Big 12, until he came to Texas as an analyst in 2019, was from '05 - '07, as OC at Ok State.  They went 4-7, 7-6, 7-6.

What skins on the wall does he have in the Big 12?

    Ok St offense rankings:

    05 -- 97

    06 -- 7

    07 -- 22

I'd say that's a fairly impressive turnaround for an offensive coordinator and a large part of the reason he was hired as the HC at Southern Miss in '08.

Stampeder post 11248 which is two posts after the fedora to baylor post

I'm definitely not bitching about Fedora not being hired.  Of all the hires Herman has made during this reset of the coaching staff I'm most enthused about Yurcich.  I'm just asking the question about Fedora and the consensus on whether Herman didn't want him or Fedora didn't want to be on staff.  When it was published LF wasn't going to stick around I assumed he just wanted to enjoy his NC buyout more to fullest and only hung around here for a year to ensure his son got a start in the profession.  But taking the OC position at Baylor begs the question.

In terms of Fedora vs. Yurcich in terms of skins on the wall and a rep as an OC, I'm not sure the masses would consider Yurcich > Fedora.  I'm plenty fine with Yurcich, but it's not as is Fedora doesn't have plenty of skins on the wall and a good bit of it in the B12.

Guy supposed knows his shit but I don’t know enough to feel good or bad about it

The interesting piece is why didn't TH simply elevate him to OC?  THs choice or Fedora just wanted nothing to do with us after this year.

People always talk about extensions helping recruiting, but that’s just bullshit from coaches’ agents. Herman had 3 years left on his deal and had just won the sugar bowl. Those extra 2 years had no effect on his recruiting.

Agreed and I'd argue it looked like a pretty weak extension when it was announced.  Definitely not the type of extension that would lead anyone to believe TH was a made man at Texas.

One thing everyone can agree on is that if an AD has demonstrated an ability to find great hires in any sport, that is a very positive indicator that they might do the same for the Important sports.

It demonstrates they know how to network and run a process to find the best possible candidates - Unlike the Korn Ferry, coaching search committee bullshit that happened a few years ago.

I'll deal with the occasional misstep from CDC, given all the positives he's demonstrated thus far, if we can avoid the colossal mistakes made by Patterson/Perrin.  It's hard to understate how far those two dudes collectively set this AD department back.

Patterson is by far the worst hire I've seen at Texas and there have been some real headscratchers over the years.  But the bleeding didn't stop with Perrin.  The Shaka extension and complete clownshow of a hiring process for a new baseball coach being the two major examples.  The baseball hire was nothing more than him wanting to leave his mark on the AD department while getting played by a couple dozen agents.  Ridiculous.

    And Giles?

Assumption is GIles would do the heavy lifting across the D-line initially and McGuire would assist, but do the heavy lifting on the recruiting front.  Crossing my fingers TH can get this done.

That’s the first indication I’d seen it was official. Thanks for the post, and a solid hire. Along with the SC dude, special teams shouldn’t be so special in the coming years.

Coleman should be able to assist with STs as well.  He made most of his hay in the NFL returning kicks.  Not sure how they'll all divvy up the responsibilities, but one way or the other they should be able to turn STs into a team strength.  Dicker is above average, Buj at least average and Jamison has worlds of potential as a PR.  Just need to find legit options on KOs and coach 'em up.

I think Lewis has a lot of promise, we've heard surprisingly little positive about Woodard and he's entering his third year, and Moore might not even be on the team. Moore coming back would help a lot, as would Lewis coming on.

Omeire is physically ready to play as well.  If he picks up the offense reasonably quickly he has a chance to see the field early.
