Early in games defenses are seemingly able to guess where Quinn wants to go and jump routes. It seems like an inordinate number of our opening drives end up with picks. Even arch got picked first drive from MSU right? Hell QE’s first throw against Georgia had a LB roll into the passing lane and QE was very lucky because he didn’t see him.

Same with Vandy. It’s def a weird pattern. I’m not smart enough to know why, though I do believe the RPO and screen emphasis make any QB in this system susceptible to more tipped balls by DL and to LBs getting into lanes.

Has anyone seen good film breakdown of why Jaxson Dart was able to put up 515 yards and 6 TDs on Arkansas a week prior to our game but we couldn't? What were they doing differently than us to put up 63 points? Figure some 9.95er has done a breakdown

Main difference: Ark played a ton of 3-high, Iowa-state style D against us. They played much more mixed against Ole Miss: some of the 3-high, but also some man free (1 safety high, man everywhere else) and a lot more 2-high. The 3-high is Sark’s kryptonite and his main way to beat it is running out of 12 personnel (or in 2022 against ISU, even 3 TEs). Ole Miss punished the 2-high and man coverage.

The other thing relevant to Quinn is that Dart will take chances—early in the game against Ark, he threw into tight windows or against some decent man coverage on go routes and just made good throws. Sark’s offense is designed to produce wide open shots. Watch for contested throws/catches some time—we get the occasional like Golden’s TD catch on the sprint out, but Quinn does not test windows very often, and Sark has appeared to coach him not to. Dart may throw some more INTs than Quinn, but he also gets the payoff when he fits into some tight windows.

Also, Ark had at least one major coverage bust against Ole Miss but none against us (or none we made them pay for).

Can't help but think that's nothing more than wishcasting.

    Most likely.

At any rate, what have we seen from Venables that suggests he can make a good hire? I mean, he could get lucky but he doesn’t seem to know how to hire an offensive staff at all.

Definitely not.  Most schools have a certain amount of credit with the supplier per year, and they are paying for anything over that number.  A reminder that Texas is unique, and not the norm.  The vast majority of universities aren't getting cash for wearing a brand.

This is New Mexico's contract w/ Nike - just the easiest one I could find.

    **********************************************************************************

    NIKE’S PRODUCT AND OTHER CONSIDERATION.

    (a) In partial consideration for the rights granted under this Agreement, each Contract
Year, UNIVERSITY shall have the right to pre-purchase up to a maximum of $3,000,000
(retail value) of NIKE Products (the “Annual Product Allotment”) at
preferential pricing, each annual amount to be mutually agreed no later than June 1
prior to the applicable Contract Year. UNIVERSITY agrees to pay NIKE 1/3 of the
retail value of the agreed Annual Product Allotment (e.g., $666,667 for an Annual
Product Allotment of $2,000,000 (retail value)) (the “Cash Purchase Price”) each
Contract Year in exchange for the Annual Product Allotment. The Cash Purchase
Price shall be due in two installments: (i) the first in the amount of 60% of the total
Cash Purchase Price for the applicable Contract Year on or before September 1 of
such Contract Year and (ii) the second in the amount of 40% of the total Cash
Purchase Price for the applicable Contract Year on or before March 1 of such
Contract Year. Upon payment of the first installment of the Cash Purchase Price
each Contract Year, UNIVERSITY shall be entitled to order directly from NIKE, and
receive, the Annual Product Allotment for use by (or in connection with) the Covered
Programs, clinics, camps (in no event shall any camp or clinic in this Agreement
include any juvenile or youth camps or clinics that are run separately by the
Coaches), Coaches, Staff and such other purposes as the Director of Athletics may
deem appropriate to support the relationship between the parties. If the full Cash
Purchase Price is not received by March 1 in any Contract Year, NIKE shall invoice
UNIVERSITY for all NIKE Products ordered for the applicable Contract Year at
    NIKE’s published wholesale prices.

    (b) UNIVERSITY shall be permitted to carry-over an Annual Product Allotment credit up
to $200,000 (retail value) in Contract Year 1 and Contract Year 2, in each case for
any unordered annual allotment of NIKE Products from such Contract Year to the
subsequent Contract Year. UNIVERSITY will notify NIKE as soon as practicable if
UNIVERSITY anticipates it will carry-over a credit to the subsequent Contract Year.

    (c) Each Contract Year, in addition to the Annual Product Allotment, UNIVERSITY shall
be entitled to order up to $100,000 (retail value) through “NIKE Elite” Client Services
(and subject to procedures established by NIKE for such purposes), for the use of
UNIVERSITY Coaches and Staff (with such allocation among Coaches and Staff to
be determined at the discretion of the Director of Athletics). No carry-over of
unordered annual allotments through NIKE Elite from one Contract Year to another
    shall be allowed.

Not arguing—I’m constitutionally incapable of conflict—just wanted to say thanks for providing a helpful qualification to my “yes.”

Wait - what do you mean by that (RE shoulder pads)?

I think my point when I asked was that they don’t really wear lower body pads any more even in games (or just thigh pads), so in fall camp when it’s shoulder pads and helmets only, how’s that different than the games? Anyway, somebody explained that the players call those days “Winnie the Pooh” because they truly just wear shorts with shoulder pads/helmets.

Folks are probably going to say that this is a stupid question but, I have to ask.

All of these uniforms that teams roll out are they paid for by the uniform/shoe companies?

    Yes.

Also, don’t sweat asking this. Back in the summer I asked if shoulder pads only actually meant shoulder pads only. Someone humored me.

  7. What I love about the guy is he will have the opp defense dialed in about 2-3 series. So even if their D has a good game plan, this mofo will adapt quickly, and he has the personnel to do it. (Contrast with game against TCU in 2022 where QB and o-line limited him.)

Such a contrast with Mack, Herman and their OCs (Strong didn’t even have game plans)…dude is out there like a savant just diagnosing the other D in about 10-12 plays.

  8. Scipio Tex has said a big difference between this year’s D and last year’s is that a lot of last year’s was driven by individual dudes making plays, whereas this year’s is coherent, cohesive, connected at all three levels, whatever co- word you prefer.

As successful as the outcome and results were, and things still did largely seem cohesive, today was the first game where some individual efforts really made the difference vs a systematic effort. Simmons stands out, the VB strip sack,  Jahdae on a couple pass break ups.

There was also some poor technique that got taken advantage of. Everybody’s favorite badass Anthony Hill parted the sea for the TD on his blitz; Simmons got upfield a time or tea and then didn’t play the puller correctly a time or two. Anyway, lots to correct there.

Overall feels great to win a game by 3 TDs at about 60% capacity of the team.

Lapham was so awful he was awesome. Like a poor man’s John Madden

but yeah something about those two together was great.

or maybe it’s just because we were great when we all remember them calling our games.

if it were the strong/herman years, I bet we don’t view them as fondly

That’s a great point. (No sarcasm) I wonder how I’d feel if Brando/Tillman were switched with Meyers/Lapham for those old games.

    guess we’ll never know
