I know exactly what is on his resume and see it as the guy has forgotten more about basketball than most people know. I did visit with him a couple of times and also spoke with the parents of some players who held him in high regard.  My opinion is just reflective of those conversations and observing the staff in game.
Wasn’t suggesting that we were going to suck because he wasn’t there. Just that he was not some scrub who could easily be replaced.  I heard from several people close to the program that his international experience was a positive.
Haith may be just great. Don’t know anything about him other than it seems he used to be the bagman at a couple of stops. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Time will tell.
I’m fairly optimistic about next year if this team can develop the on and off court chemistry displayed last year. The team is living together again in the same place so I’m hopeful.

Frank Haith won the Henry Iba coach of the year, AP coach of the year, Big 12 coach of the year, and the AAC coach of the year as a head coach in addition to being a bagman at a couple of stops.

2005- sigh. would definitely have been in green, possibly a 1 or 2 seed if not for losing PJ and LA midway through the season. that run through the aughts was magical.

Yeah but losing LA guaranteed that he would come back for his sophomore season on our elite 8 team. Not sure he comes back if he doesn't get injured.

Clearly you are not familiar with that amazing 2010-2011 Shanghai Sharks team.  Sure, they only went 8-17, but their ceiling was 4 games at best.  Donewald single handedly willed them to 4 wins above expectation.

Seriously, I think seeing Texas actually have an offense that worked last season elevated Donewald to "guru" status in the eyes of a lot of fans.  I have no idea whether he deserves the credit he has been given, more, or less, but he was in charge of the offense, and it appeared to be the most capable that most of us can remember.  That does not mean that we we can't be as successful, or more so, with Haith in charge, but not everyone shares that opinion.

I agree the offense was the best looking in terms of player and ball movement Ive seen at UT in awhile or maybe ever, but it looked like absolute crap only a year prior with the same guy running it. So I dont know whether it was the system or the players who were the major ingredient . As fans of the Longhorns we tend to focus on our team and don't really have a realistic sense of how truly atrocious offense can be for most of college basketball across the board and we tend to attribute poor offensive play to systems and coaching. When in reality a lot of it should all be chalked up to how disciplined your personnel is with their shot selection. In our case, last year, shot selection was our major core competency relative to other teams. We just didn't take a lot of bad shots. That tells me that our ridiculous level of experience and overall player discipline was doing the heavy lifting in how well we executed on the offensive end last year.

I get that we won't know the chemistry till we see it on the floor.  Last year we actually only returned 49% of the minutes and 52% of the scoring from 2021.  We had lost full-time starters Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey.  Tre Mitchell, Devin Askew and Jase Febres had also all started games.  Sir'Jabari Rice and Tyrese Hunter had barely arrived on campus at this point and Dylan Disu hadn't started a single game for Texas and was still recovering from injury.

This year we return 43% of the minutes (not a ton less than last year)... but only 36% of the scoring.  Just like last year we are returning three starters and breaking in a couple of new, but experienced guards.  So I guess subtracting a couple of in-season wins is reasonable, but I wouldn't go beyond that.

As txhorns mentions, EVERYONE is going to have a lot of turnover.  KU is also only returning 39% of their scoring and they may be the #1 team in the country.

As far as coaching goes, I agree it is a downgrade losing Chris Beard from the off-season.  We retained almost all of the staff though, so there is good continuity.  I personally think Frank Haith is a SLIGHT upgrade over Donewald, but others may disagree.  I also think Cory Schlesinger is a SLIGHT upgrade over John Reilly, but both are great.  Losing Beard does hurt though.  I would say that is good for a couple of losses as well.

I think "on paper" the team is a little better, and the pieces seem to fit better. But with the above intangibles there is more risk.  So for me personally, I will call it a wash.  I would be pretty disappointed if we don't make the 2nd weekend with this group.

I'm actually curious as to why some would consider Bob Donewald Jr to be the superior assistant to Frank Haith. I wonder what specific thing they would be basing this opinion on.

  5. The last 12 months were huge for Holland and it basically upped his profile tremendously. He dominated EYBL & FIBA last summer and then followed it up this past spring and confirmed this view with glowing reports about his play during the McDonald's All-American practices where he was thought to easily be the best player there. This caused the GLeague to up it's offer as well as Arkansas. Say what you want, but if the NCAA wants to keep pretending that this isn't a professional endeavor, and continues to refuse to bring some sort of order to their business with actual contracts instead of genuflecting at the altar of amateurism this will continue to happen.  Simple economics; Holland's value went up and he sought payment reflecting this fact.

Can someone explain to me why the American right suddenly became full throated supporters of Putin and Russia. Did it all just begin as a misguided attempt to cover for Trump and his obviously affiliation that went too far, or is there something more at play going on here?  I remember back during the 2012 election Romney warning of the rising Russian threat and the Dems downplaying it or not taking his comments very seriously. Now the tables have turned a complete 180 on this view.

  7. Honestly, last night was the best example of draft maneuvering Ive ever seen as a Mavs fan. We literally manufactured nearly $30 million of cap space and 2 needed 1st round defensive prospects out of Bertaans and the #10 pick. Richaun Holmes will take up most of the $17 million trade exception slot and leave us still with our MLE. Im not sure how the remaining $5million works on the trade exception, but we might have that available as well.

Tanked the very end of the season to desperately hold on to their lottery pick. Succeeded but got fined.

Traded back from 10 and still got their guy plus gained the MLE by dumping Bertans.

Used that MLE so that Sacremento could dump player/position of our need in order to gain their first round pick to target Prosper.

Most everyone seems to be gushing. When should I start following the Mavs again?

I thought we moved the trade exception for Holmes. I believe we still have the MLE.

The Iraqi Dinar scam, which I knew several people, I presume that graduated to Magaists, got ensnared in.  That was very cultish in its own right, even when I presented solid facts it didn't deter them, they'd buy more into it.  Circle the wagons so to speak.

There's a sucker born every minute, and there were a shitload of minutes between 1945 and 1965.

Man i forgot about that Iraqi Dinar scam. Pretty much every person I know in the oilfield born before 1960 got ensnared in that shit.  There's something about conservatives and their penchant for paranoia that makes them perfect marks for scammers. Even as a kid back in the late 80s & early 90s I picked up on the fact that the radio ads that came on during Rush Limbaugh's time slot were much more likely to have a scammish quality to it.  And the same goes for ads on Foxnews or any conservative show on xm radio. The scammers know where their bread is buttered. Now that I think about it, the current state of the conservative movement was highly predictable given just this little bit of insight.

Correct, but the kid was in Beard's backyard. He took Anamewke late in the recruiting cycle, but still had nothing for Weaver, who had just led his team to a state championship.

Anamewke along with the Jakobe Walter surprised everyone with their run to the state championship game their senior year.  They spoiled what was probably the most highly anticipated state championship match-up in the last 25 years between Richardson and Duncanville. And it's supremely ridiculous to suggest we should've taken Weaver over Morris. Morris' situation was just unfortunate.  Had he arrived in Austin with a less experienced roster in place and gotten more playing time and more diverse role he would've been much happier with his time here and would still be on the roster.

Among the biggest reasons they left the Big 12 was the opportunity to stick it to the Longhorns, ancient rivals but difficult league partners, and to grow into something that would overshadow the monolithic program in Austin. Then the SEC brought Texas aboard without so much as a serious consultation with A&M.

This is one area where the burnt orange media behemoth failed us mightily. Everything about our time in the BIg 12 and the original sin of unequal revenue sharing gets told as if we were the sole beneficiary and other schools that had the same favorite son status such as A&M and Nebraska played no part in things being the way they were.

I find this one very attractive and awful as a sports presenter.

I have looked up her background and know that she swam at UT and the. USC but she comes across as someone who has never followed sports, but acts like a sports fan for her job.

Fit body, bleached hair, spray tan, authentic as a Seven Dollar Bill.

Her brother was a UT QB for a couple of years as well.

I've got nothing against either of these guys but how much "magic" could there have been? I know who each of them are, individually. No idea they did SC together.

They were actually really good and funny doing sportscenter together.  They typically worked the 1am/ west coast sportscenter together and were really funny and had great chemistry. Had they been a team during ESPN's peak in the 90s they would've had a shit load more fanfare.

  14. According to the article below ESPN tried to Kenny Mayne him and keep him at a lower salary, but he said sayonara.

    https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/stan-verrett-says-goodbye-to-long-time-sportscenter-co-anchor-neil-everett-we-are-brothers-for-life.html

ESPN was dealt another blow with Thursday’s news that longtime SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett is leaving the network, departing after 23 glorious years. ESPN tried to retain him at a lower salary, which Everett rejected (you might remember Kenny Mayne left Bristol under similar circumstances in 2021), opting for a fresh start elsewhere. Like Chris Chelios, who suffered the same fate when his contract wasn’t renewed earlier this week, Everett finds himself a casualty of ESPN’s ongoing budget cuts with Disney looking to shed a mammoth $5.5 billion in costs company-wide.

Everett already has a couple irons in the fire—he hopes to expand his studio role with the Portland Trail Blazers next season and is also said to be working on several “side projects.” Still, even with Everett making fewer appearances in recent years, it’s sad he’ll no longer share a desk with Stan Verrett, his co-host of 14 years on the 1 AM ET edition of SportsCenter broadcast from ESPN’s Los Angeles studios.

Obviously, this won’t happen, but they really should just do 11 conference games and 1 OOC.  Nobody plays more than 1 real team in OOC, anyway.  We want to be able to have our yearly game against Michigan, Ohio State, etc., but who gives a fuck about the other Rice and Louisiana Monroe type games?

It would also make conference scheduling easy.  Two eight team divisions.  Play all 7 of the other teams in your division ever year, plus 4 of the 8 in the other division.

The only reasons this wouldn’t happen are schools hating giving up cupcake wins and giving up an extra home game or two against directional patsies.  Neither of those is a really great reason, especially if you can get a better tv deal from having more real games instead of 25% of the season being trash directional schools.

If we’re going to have an era of superconferences and an expanded playoff, then take advantage of it.  Play an NFL type schedule instead of beating up on sisters of the poor until October.

LOL at claiming the only reason something that has never happened wouldn't happen is due to a totally sensible reason for it not happening.

If you are qualifying Barkley as a PF it gets more tricky.

Clearly Duncan is #1. Then I would put Dirk, Barkley and then KG. No crime in being #4 on that list.

Duncan is a center in every recognizable understanding of the position. From the position he maintained while on the court to the role he played for the team. Just because Duncan didn't want to be called a center doesn't remove that fact that is the position he provided for his team.

“Isn’t even close” is a bit of a stretch lol

Dirk was the more polished skilled player. KGs defense and passing was superior and rare for a 6’11 big. But dirks skill with the ball separated the 2. Both are easily in that 3-8 top PF of all time list so…

Bomani Jones has made the argument that in 2005, 2006, & 2007. Dirk was arguably the best player in the NBA and is criminally underrated as a result. His Win shares/48 during this period reflects this claim.

KG's inability to get Minnesota out of the first round sans a single time in 2004 tells me that there's no debate between Dirk and KG. KG played with Terrell Brandon, Tom Gugliotta, Malik Sealy, Sam Cassell, Stephon Marbury, Latrell Sprewell, Chauncey Billups, Isaiah Rider, Wally Szczerbiak, Joe Smith, and a number of quality NBA players yet did absolutely nothing with his teams when he was the lead dog. Go look at the rosters Dirk carried to the Finals in his 2 appearances there. From 2007 until Luka arrive Dirk only played with 2 other allstars, Josh Howard & Jason Kidd. Mark Cuban deserves a roster malpractice suit brought against him for how inept he's been at building rosters around star players.

    image.png.7400418ac659616f005f7a7e43853ae9.png

In their sole playoff series against each other Dirk wiped the floor with Garnett averaging 33 and 16 rebs against him in route to a 3-0 sweep.

They decided to not decide on 3-6-6 or 1-7-7.

This is a one year bridge schedule with 8 games. It sounds like they will have at least 2 rivalries protected.

I doubt it will be a 1 year bridge schedule. They're going to do 2 years to allow for home and homes with the other 7 teams. At the earliest, I bet the 3-6, 9 game schedule begins in '26.
