I think in years past the right and left have been very good at appointing justices from the Supreme Court down to lower-level courts that have the same philosophies as them (Pro Life, Pro Choice, tough on crime, etc...).  What Trump seems to have from judges is straight loyalty to him.  I can't imagine when Reagan appointed Sandra Day O'Connor that she was like, "hey, if this Iran contra deal gets you in trouble, don't worry.  I will make sure you are safe".  It shows the true flaw in our justice system and of course it took 200 years for us to get someone like Trump who really knew how to take advantage of it.

And the perfect storm of getting THREE fucking SCOTUS appointments. Because of course

Sorry to derail this thread so this will be my last post here and any further ones will be on the Surly kids who didn’t go to UT one…

Yea, never had been to Fayettenam until last year but the old town by campus is great and reminded me of Austin the the 80’s when I attended UT and will probably buy a house there for the kid to live in next year.

@irishtexan - yea, kid does manual labor as a job now and benches 300# at18 (no ‘roids)  But won’t need to swing a shovel as he can use his trust fund to hire someone to dig a ditch for him if needed…

    Pics?

Kind of blown away here, I'm through three episodes and couldn't agree more. This show is really fucking freaky. Then I realized you were talking about season one, which is awesome because it means I have another season of freaky shit to watch.

I started in season two, because they seemed unrelated and the 90s were more interesting. And agreed, the guy who plays Edmund is on another level. Great shit all around

Stop what you are doing and watch season 1.

Just finished season 2 and I highly recommend season 1 first. The ending of season 2 will have a much bigger impact

    Just finished it up.

An incredible cast. The dude playing Edmund deserves an Emmy.

The story kept me guessing and the reveals came at perfect timing.

    10/10

You just reminded me that season 2 came out like last week. Will be watching this weekend

Just watched. Amazing in some really subtle ways.

I cannot fathom being a Trans Jew in Nazi Germany. The first 3 Trans operations in 19 fucking 30 something blows my mind. Not that it happened, but that Trans people were so desperate to reconcile who they were that they would undergo what I have to assume was the most experimental, ham-fisted, life altering surgeries blows my mind. 100 fucking years ago. Jesus.

It gave me a real moment of understanding for Trans issues. Or my lack of understanding of Trans issues. I paused the documentary to process why I was more appalled by that part than some of the other appalling shit being depicted. My conclusion is I'm mentally comfortable with Gay, but have been subliminally skeptical of Trans. Seeing that level of desperation tells me I just don't understand.

    Any other recommendations?

I’m glad you took the time to watch and have the open mind to realize you have a lot to learn. So do I. I know that I love being a man. No doubts in my mind. I don’t understand being trans. But you know what? It’s not for me to understand. Just accept and mind my own business.

    Excellent doc. Highly recommend.

Can't remember if they bring it up or not, but it's worth noting that like with all fascists, the top ranks of the early Nazi party had a notable number of hypocritical closeted sadists, much like the modern Republican party

Oh they definitely mention it. They discus Ernst Rohm and how he frequented those clubs. It’s really good and has some very chilling parallels to what’s happening today.

I love the drive-by “but I could never vote for Biden.” Why exactly? You disagree with his economic policies? That he kills babies in the 4th trimester? His age? It’s okay to disagree with him but considering the opposition, and the fact that the matchup is already set, and that we’re guaranteed an octogenarian either way, what on earth could possibly justify “both are bad so it doesn’t matter.” The other guy is flat out telling you he’s going to scrap all constitutional norms, and oh by the way is a rapist and criminal. I just don’t get it, at all, the assumption has to be a closet trumpkin.

They are brainwashed. They don’t know any specific policies. They’re lost forever

Devil's advocate as I love me a good march, but some kids just want to learn, looking at you Asian/Nigerian/Brazilian student walking through the west mall.  Is it ok to chant intimidating shit at black or hispanic students?

Is it ok to shout in their face and harass them? No. If theyre just chanting and paying them no mind as they walk by? It’s ugly, but I don’t see why that should be shut down with the force of the state

staggering lack of self awareness is staggering.

    Protests are fine.

Intimidation of groups of people is dead fucking wrong.  fuck you and anyone who allows situations like Cooper Union, the literal harassing intimidation of others.

And NO there is not evidence I have seen that harassing intimidation happened at UT yesterday.

Do you see a difference between intimidating chants and literal harassment?

should the neo nazis in Charlottesville been shut down with brute force from the state because of their chant of “Jews will not replace us”? That’s a pretty intimidating chant, is it harassment?

What is the debate? Their right as Jews to exist? The right of Israel to exist? Their association with Israel? Are we going back to BC, 1948, the most recent Hamas attack, Israel's response? The treatment of the average Palestinian in Gaza? Is there a moderator? Can the audience shout down the speakers?

I have got to tell you that debating a mob that is or isn't violent is a terrible idea. What you call debating at a demonstration is a simple yelling at each other and in those kind of debates, majority rules. Meanwhile many kids just want to go to school without incident and get prepared for finals. And just because one is Jewish, doesn't mean he supports Israel, it doesn't mean he must denounce Israel, and it could mean any thing in-between. Jews aren't some monolithic block. There are many differing views. So when Jerry Seinfeld or Michael Dell, or Scarlett Johansson get confronted by demonstrators because of their religion, it raises a lot of red flags for Jews in the US. And then when the demonstrations are being started on campus and begin to spread, it raises more red flags.

As for everything being peaceful, I can only go by hearsay because I'm a little old for campus. What I can gather is that it is peaceful if you are thick skinned. Intimidation, chants like from the river to the sea, the Holocaust didn't exist, Jews kill Palestinian babies, are present. And such things wouldn't affect all Jews equally. Some may call that peaceful as long as there isn't spitting and pushing. Some may be scared. Some would rather celebrate Pesach than deal with a bunch of protests.

And as you said people who engage in violence, threats, and intimidation, should be held accountable. This hasn't been happening, though. And things are getting out of hand in many places around the country and around the world. When mobs storm the airport terminal in Daghestani, shouting antisemitic slogans, chanting "Allahu Akbar" and running around asking staff where the "Jews" are, Jews around the world take notice. It has been seen before and it has rarely ended peacefully.

    Oh no! Not intimidation chants!
