In this era of NIL and transfer portal, there is really no excuse for a top tier coach not making the tournament, even in year 1.

Beard was hired March 13. That gave him the entire transfer portal to build a team - and the entire offseason to coach it up.  And he wasn't coaching in March, so he could immediately get to recruiting those transfers.  This season is ending up as a mild failure IMO.

If Coach K, Bill Self or Roy Williams took over Ole Miss in this era, everyone would expect them to be ultra competitive immediately.  And top-tier players would have been transferring there from day 1.  Beard signed the #12, #78, #106, #108, #132, #137 portal players.  That is good, but not great.

He had a lot of advantages at Texas, but I also think the staff he put together was a great group of recruiters - including Rodney Terry.  We'll see what year two looks like, but I'm not ready to declare that he is going to own us in the SEC.

Not defending Beard to the stake here but are these guys also coming in with nuclear DV headlines with their name in it? Had he left Texas clean to take OM over he would have gotten better assistants, portals, and recruits. Heck Pitino needed a conference tournament run to make the field his first year at Iona before settling in to win the conference the last 2 years.

I do think his stock is forever tainted from his departure here and will hold him back from getting back to Tech/Texas levels. But calling year 1 at Ole Miss a failure is a little much for a program with 5 tournament wins all time.

Bjorke is the classic example of Fup and move up from his earliest examples. Ole Miss, maybe he wasn’t privy to telephone records, but still.

He hasn’t even proven himself at aggy, like even being top 25 in the Directors Cup, since his arrival at B/CS. All the $$$ aggy throws at both men/women’s athletics, and they still suck!

Search committee at OSU was blindfolded/mislead. Good luck going forward.

    Hook’em!!!

What's funny is Bjork has a connection to Jack Harbaugh from time spent at WKU. They needed one last FU to tOSU before they head back to the NFL.

  3. Their pool of candidates will be pretty weak after they see that:

    1. The athletic budget has 7 million of dead money until 2031 greatly limiting what they will be able to do in basketball and any other jobs that come open.

    2. After the Stoops fiasco it is evident that the AD is a powerless position in College Station with the real power lying in the hands of BMD and social media perception.

    3. Getting stuck with Mike Elko at another 7 million/year with no record of success. It would be a gamble for a great AD to take that job knowing they don't have any say in what happens and a 50/50 shot or being stuck with another lame duck coach for 5 years.

I’ll ask here.  I feel like there were moments when cook was vocal about under utilized last season.  With golden and bond in   How does this affect the young guys

Would be worried more about Niblett/Moore than Cook. The issue last season was having 3 freshman behind the core not having enough experience to trust in big moments. We should have more rotation with those 3 and 2 experienced receivers coming in. The question is will Wingo be ready to go and push one of those out.

Casey Thompson is currently 1-4 in the Texas-OU rivalry. He's got a chance to surpass Sam's 1-4 mark in October.

so how long do we have left on RTs contract? and what’s the buyout?

He signed a five year 15 million dollar contract last March.

    Not sure on the buyout.

Beard and Smart both had fully guaranteed deals from what I could find. Wouldn't shock me if they gave that to Terry based on the history.

Wake Forest paid 14+ million to fire their coach and Indiana paid 10+ to fire Archie Miller. RT will have about 9 left at most after next season if this trend continues. Not a record breaking sum and in line with industry standards if we needed to can him.

Also after 2 years the shine and pearl clutching from those who wanted us to hire him no matter what will have worn off.
