Quinn's lack of elite complements can be overstated, but it is real. I don't want to speak ill of our RB room, but the dropoff from Bijan -> Brooks -> finally Wisner as starter has been a massive problem. We should always have a guy at RB that everyone else is jealous of and we just don't have that at all. WR room is also a dip and TE is debatable.

Blue and Wisner were always supposed to be change of pace/boutique backs IMHO.

    Still better than Cade Brewer.

We should ditch 12 personnel with the current lineup. We gain zero advantages in passing or running game from that personnel package. Neither TE is a great blocker and only one of them is a receiving threat.

  3. OTF brought up a good point today. Who on the Texas offense is elite? Of course Kelvin Banks but that isn't a position to create explosive plays. It is more about skill position. How many did we have last year? Scatterbitch from ASU is an elite college player. Interesting thought when you think about the struggles on offense. I would say the last half of the season Golden might be in that category. Our running backs don't make people miss. Helm is the best at yards after contact. Who had that on their bingo card?

  4. After rewatching the game and getting a new sense of hatred for ASU, the outcome and the way it happened was glorious. Fuck those arrogant fucks. We stabbed a pitchfork right in their gut when they thought they had us beat.  Having said that, can we please fucking figure out how to run block this week?

  5. Worst game of the year for Jake Majors by far. He spent a lot of time on the ground and or 3 yards in our own backfield on run plays. I would guess his PFF grade for this game was bad. A big percentage of TFLS were because he was getting his shit pushed in.

  6. Below is where the game changed momentum wise IMHO. This is where they got hope. Fake punt. See the guy below the receiver, #23. Yeah he was lined up on the line of scrimmage and he is even with the receiver down field. Officials should never miss a call like that.

  7. Rewatching the game now, found where we ran a counter to the OZ at just before 5:00 in the 2nd QTR. Got blown up with a whiff by Hayden Conner, he makes that block, it is set up pretty well unless someone sheds a block.

Play action passes are fine provided it's against man defense and it's a play designed for really only one WR/TE target.  On the TD pass to Helm, he was going to Helm or nothing.  He didn't need his slow brain, just a set of eyes to see where the defender is in relation to Helm.  Open?  Throw.  Not open?  Don't throw.

If it's zone or NOT a play drawn up for a very specific WR/TE, then Ewers has to process information (what's the coverage and who's going to BE open...which is a future decision, not a "now" decision made with the eyes) and he needs every fucking millisecond for his brain to get rolling.  I think PA and other eye candy plays hurt him and should be replaced with shotgun snap, eyes downfield from the get-go.

His slow processing is why he can't work the pocket when protection isn't great and even a single defender is getting through.  It asks him to mentally multitask and he doesn't have it.  PA, or anything with his eyes not downfield, and a soft pocket results in a panic/surprise response.  He needs to be processing all of the time or none of the time (predetermined target).

Take it to the Ewers thread whiny ass. He just won the game, have some respect.

That’s what I remember and it’s when I think QE is at his best … well that and when our running game is humming.

I really think PA is a complete waste when the run game is stalled like it was. I also think sark needs to play straight up when he’s got the talent advantage and mix in the cute stuff. Spread the field, shot gun, 3 step, 5 step drop backs and sling the fucking thing.

PA only works if the defense fears the run, they certainly didn't fear it.

  10. If you want to continue to run that OZ with the RB offset, you are gonna have to run some counter out of the same formation IMO. The OZ PA pass has been disastrous. I bet we have more sacks on that play than any other.

Now it's second and 18. We are still in 12 personnel. ASU basically has 8 men in the box again. We run a toss to the boundary and we actually block it up pretty well. Our TEs double team the playside DE. Banks washes down the 3-tech DT. We pull Majors and Conner. Majors sees the backside pursuit shoot the gap and peels back to handle him. Conner takes he corner around the end. The problem is they just had too many hats. Wisner makes the 1st guy miss and picks up 6.

One of the best runs of the day sadly, out of the pistol no less.

One thing to consider is that they all stopped blocking, completely and turned around after the fumble.

I'm not defending the play, but the reality exists that Wisner called fumble. In which case, ALL players, including OL have been coached to stop whatever their assignments were and look for the ball.

If you look closely, as soon as the ball springs loose, the stop blocking, turn and start looking at the ground. "loose ball drill"

It would explain why all of them, at the same time stopped their blocking assignment, turned around and started looking down on the ground.

Bad play call, bad execution of a bad play call, great "tip" drill by Ewers to catch the ball in the air, look for running room. Good job of running the "ball" drill by the OL. Good choice by Quinn to manage a bad situation and not make it worse by just going down.

Best result of a cluster fuck we probably could have hoped for in that situation.

Could be true and might be probable but at this point we don't truly know. Kelvin Banks kept blocked and even he got shedded. Best case was 3 guys completely whiffed or bull dozed. That play was doomed. ASU had the perfect call.

They weren’t respecting Quinn at all on the ZR and only keyed on the backs

Exactly how many times do you think we ran ZR? I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was zero. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter the number was so small it was insignificant in the grand scheme of the offensive game plan. It isn't and never will be a staple of the Sark offense with someone like Quinn as the QB.
