I’d be ok with LBJ running back his start from last year’s regional

Grubbs goes 6, Gage finishes it off. LBJ goes the distance against aggy. Ace goes 5 against aggy then Gage gets us the next 4. Off to the supers. Let’s go.

Fuck Schloss.  If you’ll associate with those idiots, that’s your death sentence. I don’t want that cocksucker anywhere near Texas baseball.

That too. Plus he just seems like a major cocksucker.

Anyways, who’s getting the ball Friday?

One of my biggest frustrations with the game threads is that things like the head coaching position and regional prospects become big topics of conversation instead of, you know, what we are actually doing at that moment. Like yes I get that winning this early season tournament, midweek game, weekend series, or (shudder) conference tournament are not nearly as important as who is head coach or what might happen in June but it is what Texas is playing for right now and so can we talk about that in the game thread please?

Remember when you said this in the fuck Pierce thread?

Win this Regional Pierce and I will forgive all the bullshit your team has done this year.

And then you do this…..you sneaky fuck

Cool cool. So he's probably as bad or in the same conversation as Rodney Terry who everyone also wants fired.

But he’s not as bad or even in the same conversation as Terry. And yes, unless we pull a ‘22 ole miss, I’m out on Pierce. God damn. This whole acting like Pierce is some baseball combo of Charlie, Mackovich and Weltlich is fucking nuts.

I mean why even compare pierce to the past or anything outside the walls of Bellmont.

He's easily the worst active coach, including Rodney Terry. That's grounds enough to be fired this isn't complicated. David Pierce is not up to the standard for UT athletics, fuck everyone else and fuck the past.

So, what has Rodney Terry done to be considered better than Pierce? This outta be fun.

As I’ve thought more about it, DP has the opportunity to make the ballsiest move of all time.  And piss many of you off.

This regional could go anywhere from 3 to 5 games for the winning team.

The Aggies are better.  They aren’t going to blow a top arm in game 1.  Grambling lost by a combined 47-3 versus the Pigs and LSU.  Both games ended after 7.

We are likely better off losing game 1 than game 2.  Lose game 1, and you get Grambling.  They gave up 10 or more runs 21 times against the number 274th schedule.  20 runs 5 times.  If we hit, and we should, then any arm we throw should be sufficient.

ULaLa will have used their top 2 guys.  The Aggies will have used their top guy.  We need to win 4.  We will likely need to beat them twice whether it’s winners bracket or losers bracket.

Go Cody Howard.  If he somehow comes thru, you’ve still got your top 3 starters plus Hurley.  If we lose, we have a winnable game and should be able to piece together and preserve our staff.  So our choice versus ULala #3 or Aggies #2.

Our least likely win is versus Aggies #1.

It will never happen, but if Pierce is going down, it might as well be in flames.

Had a similar conversation with @B00M last night about this. The agent of chaos in me wants us to win this regional after losing the first game just to see how the fuck we would pull that off.

But 3-0 would be a lot cooler.

We went 700+ days without a conference series win under the previous coach. Y'all are out of your damn minds.

Yeah 2012-2016 was dark with the exception of 2014. Of course that team was frustrating as hell too, but they got hot at the right time. And of course gave us hope for 2015 but nope. They couldn’t hit a beach ball. 2016 was hopeless all around. We pretty much knew we were fucked then Cal came to town and fucked our shit up in 4 games. Fun times.

You all keep mentioning Pierce's resume and including his accomplishments at Texas.....Most of the replacement coaches mentioned in this thread have 100% better resumes than Pierce did at the time of his hiring.

    image.png.abc4aad377a0bafa741a400abbe6685e.png

But we’re not talking about the time of his hiring. We’re talking right now. And most of the guy we would target have had similar years as Pierce has the last 6 real seasons.

Every game 1 starter in Omaha has punked Pierce lineups. Nothing special about 2021. And if hypothetically MSU didn’t have Bednar, we were going to walk past Leiter and Rocker?

I would’ve liked the chance. Our pitching staff were letting their nuts hang all postseason while Ivan finally figured out elite pitching. The top of the order at the time was coming out hot, often getting us 2-3 runs in the first 2 or 3 frames putting the pressure on the opponent.Pretty sure Hansen would’ve started game one with Witt ready to go then Madden game 2. Who knows.

Now what’s really pissed me off is that should’ve been the start of an 02-09 type run. But here we are 3 years later with a frustrating but fun, scrappy team. Injury luck has of course sucked but god damn

The announcers kept mentioning that we’re playing for a Top 8 national seed if we win the tournament. While that would be awesome, I don’t see it happening. I think even if we win it we finish just outside the Top 8 seeds. Have to win the tournament before we worry about that.

Fuck the announcers and fuck ou. And fuck you for good measure

Meaningless probably isn't the best word to use and I know I've used it before. There is a lot of middle ground between meaningless and meaningful and the conference tournament falls somewhere in there. Winning is always better than losing and I don't think anyone here is saying to purposely throw games. But in a sport like baseball with so many moving parts/players, there is a fine line you have to walk at this point in the season.

Conference tournaments are unpredictable, with varying motivation factors among teams. Some need to win it, some are indifferent, some are ready to go home. Some pitchers need to throw, some need rest, some need film for the portal opening next week. Some teams have guys who could use a few days of extra rest while some need to reps for players who may have recently entered the starting lineup. We had Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell fighting through pretty significant back injuries last year at this time, and the full week of rest did wonders for their regional/super-regional performance.

Similar to the conference tournament in basketball, there is very little evidence that winning or losing foreshadows what is to come, assuming you already have a postseason bid locked up. If we can accept that while still hoping for wins, it makes this week less stressful as the buildup for the real tournament starts.

A lotta ins, lotta of outs, lotta what have you’s

Not even a Chris Carmichael reference yet? Because if anyone is capable of a three run dong in the national title game, it’s Jack O’Dowd.

    How about Dooley Prince?

    24 minutes ago, Cajun said:

Look at O'Dowd's swing closely.  He's a long, smooth, but very slow-twitch type hitter.  He sweeps through the hitting zone with the bat.

Kody was a fast-twitch, trip hammer type hitter.  Exploded on the ball.

O'Dowd is not going full Kody.

Jesus, Cajun. Kody’s swing was way out of whack. He was only any good cause of his dads steroids. O’Dowd has raw power, a smooth swing and situational awareness up there with the likes of Derek Jeter. I don’t know what you’ve been watching, but O’Dowd is the truth.

I agree. They always seem to discard what happens in the conference tournament if you're already qualified for the regionals.

Which is why I’ve never given a shit about the conference tournament. I mean, it’s cool when we win but I’d rather go 1-2 and get our guys a couple days rest.

Well there’s always someone random that steps up big time in our tournament runs. We just gotta, you know, make a big run.

Gage threw 36 innings in conference play this year without making a single start. 16 more innings than the next closest guy out of the pen which was Dre who had 20. Gage only threw 5.2 less innings than Lebarron who started 10 conference games.

The amount of stressful pitches Gage threw is pretty incredible. The offense did their thing most of the year, Ace, Max and Andre were obviously vital parts to this team being able to grind out series wins but without Gage consistently getting this team the final 6-9 outs pretty much every win, we would have been a .500 baseball team. Gage finished with 4 wins and 7 saves in conference play.

I read this in the LHN “he’s a longhorn legend” voice and it was pretty epic.

The cover of the game was literally shot in the real Cotton Bowl. No way in hell they paid for that and didn’t get the rights to put it in the game.

Hopefully they get Texas OU right in this game. Used to piss me off so much seeing our fans around the tunnel. Get it right, EA

We were one play with a shitty lighting system married with coastal fog and a fluke mis-played flyball by our stud righfielder away from Omaha.

    Away from extra innings*

Obviously no guarantee we win that game but I get where you’re coming from. It’s still been a frustrating few years since our ‘21 run.
