Between 2010 to 2012, when the US for a time had more than 100,000 soldiers in the country, the cost of the war grew to almost $100bn a year, according to US government figures.

In addition, the US state department - along with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and other government agencies - spent $44bn on reconstruction projects.

That brings the total cost - based on official data - to $822bn between 2001 and 2019, but it doesn't include any spending in Pakistan, which the US uses as a base for Afghan-related operations.

According to a Brown University study in 2019, which has looked at war spending in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, the US had spent around $978bn (their estimate also includes money allocated for the 2020 fiscal year).

  2. Had a few people I knew did this via large corporate. Love the experience only because it was a huge windfall income wise and basically a constant vacation even though they had a local job. You never get integrated into the local community and emphasize the huge pain in the ass it was even with corporate money to set up standard day to day items like banks, utilities, etc.

I think a lot of people under estimate how hard the cultural shock and lack of community will impact them personally.

I have looked into doing this but figured that I could get the same result without the hassle by working remote and living abroad 1 month out of the year. You can stretch it out to 2-3 months if you want longer. I think most people would get their fix only doing 2-3 months a year if their job allows them to be remote.

It’s time to go to work on the 20-40 year old age group. It’s fucking shocking how many of them aren’t getting vaccinated. Good friend of mines daughter is 24 and has a job that requires her to travel all over the country. She’s out at bars pretty much every night. Both her parents are vaxxed but they are hesitant to ask her to do it because of concerns about infertility. Meanwhile her employer is telling her they are going to reassign her if she doesn’t do it. My girlfriend’s daughter is 26 and she is flat refusing to get vaccinated solely because her idiot boyfriend told her not to. He doesn’t have much of a reason other than he thinks he is really smart. He’s 26 and drives Uber for a living. Fortunately her father has told idiot boyfriend that he is not allowed in the house until he’s vaccinated. So far that isn’t working. Maybe they just want to kill all us olds off.

I’ll give her a jab...it is just a little prick.

I end up in Berlin fairly regularly for work. Fantastic city. Do you know what part of town you will be staying in while there?

not yet. im assuming near government offices? friend's wife is in local government so assume we will stay near them unless told to stay elsewhere...

  5. bump. About to spend two weeks in Germany. Just north of Cologne to visit a manufacturing plant so need suggestions for that area for the weekend.

Likely going to spend the second half in Berlin for no other reason than know a few people in the city.

Likely going to rent a car since we are in nowhere land for work (right on the Netherland border).

That would be very bad news for crypto, I think. When I think of crypto, I think of “anonymous” and “decentralized”. That law would cut one of the two pillars off. It seems like running afoul of uncle sam is inevitable for bitcoin.

because of the ledger system, it has actually made it easier for the FEDs to seize vs traditional banking.

  7. We have fully embraced the nomadic lifestyle, and I have convinced my SO that we should live in either Utah or Colorado this Nov/Dec so I can ski / snowboard. I have skied in Colorado multiple times. Wanted to see which state/area is best to live/work/ski in Nov timeframe? What, how or where can we make this cost effective?

We both are fully remote for work so normal day time still need to work, but I am definitely going to take every chance I get to ski / snowboard. Need good restaurants and quality wifi so can't live in remote mountains for a month.

Ideally, in somewhat of a town where SO can roam around with the dogs while I ski/snowboard. We have been doing this now for 2 months and just book long-term airbnbs so will do the same for these month(s).

How early does ski/snowboarding season start? I have skied and snowboard for years but never been close enough to go regularly so likely going to bite the bullet and purchase my own equipment too. Any recommendations?

God damn, that’s actually tempting. I’ve been contemplating a job with extremely little responsibility and that might fit the bill.

wondering the same...wonder if my CFO title will qualify to handle money

  9. AA is terrible. United continues to decline but at least not AA.

BA and Lufthansa in same class. Turkish air 5+ years ago was great but now just ok.

    ANA/ JAL great.

    China Eastern terrible.

I think that is all the airlines that I have flown business or first. Agree with LL that 1st is not worth it but definitely it is for business.

Also I think an underrated aspect of fat people is the understanding that food is a chemical and like with any chemical, there is a chance (and some people or populations of people are more prone than others) to addiction. Especially with sugar.

So you have people who are getting cheap hits of dopamine from eating pleasurable and tasty foods, and over and over and over, they build a tolerance. So now they have to eat like crap all day long to get those highs. Or else the alternative is they feel like crap even when heating "healthy" so they think, why bother eating healthy when it makes me feel sick? So they relapse back to the stuff that is killing them. No different than heroin, at that point, directionally speaking.

As many can attest after a long boys weekend or a vacation of eating like crap-- you feel like crap and have a sort of hangover or detox period complete with headaches or lethargy or migraines-- now put yourself in a 260 lb, 6 foot or shorter person (and beyond) and you start to see the real problem is that once you've become food/sugar addicted, it takes a level of commitment and mental strength that isn't for everyone.

Still, I'll die on the hill that if you are raising fat kids, you should be talked to about it-- whether it from a doctor or a social worker. Don't put your own unhealthiness and poor decisions and choices and food addictions on innocent kids, just like you wouldnt give them booze or cigarettes.

This. I think people under estimate how much fat, sugar, etc the American diet includes if you eat out at fast food, etc places.

I can’t eat most of that food. In my house, we eat almost no sweets then eat lots of fruits and veggies. Once you get off the sugar, etc cycle, it makes most typical fast food places inedible.

  11. I was advising some Chinese investors a few years ago. They were evaluating coal mines for export, and we could not make the economics work. It was cheaper to ship NG than goal given the projected cost of the projects over the lifetime.

I don't buy that environmentalism is killing coal. It is purely economic, and coal is no longer subsidize through the nose to make it economically competitive.
