...the Ags aren't done riding a wave of momentum from the spring game.

Jimbo Fisher and Co. are sitting in OUTSTANDING shape with several visitors from the weekend, something Howell and Brauny did a great job of conveying during and immediately following the three-day recruiting bonanza.

With Southlake Carroll P Tyler White and La Grange ATH Bravion Rogers joining the 2023 commit list on successive days, don't be at all surprised to see the Aggies' current run continue, possibly as early as today or tomorrow. The guys we're keeping the closest eye on at this time include the South Oak Cliff duo - Malik Muhammad and longtime A&M lean Jayvon Thomas. Other names I feel are leaning VERY heavily the Ags' way include five-star corner Tony Mitchell and 2024 defensive tackle Omar White. Denton Ryan five-star linebacker Anthony Hill isn't making a move anytime soon, nor is Katy Paetow DE and fellow five-star David Hicks, but I continue to believe the Ags are sitting in an enviable position with both. A couple of guys Fisher and the maroon recruiting machine made significant strides with this weekend? El Campo RB Reuben Owens and Arlington Martin cover man Javien Toviano.

Along the o-line - which will be a big-time priority this cycle - new hire Steve Addazio is building a lot of behind the scenes momentum, particularly with guys like Westlake's T.J. Shanahan, Odessa Permian four-star Harris Sewell and new offer Conner Stroh of Frisco Wakeland.

Just a quick Tuesday update for you guys while things seem to popping off like severe storms on a late spring Texas afternoon.

Surprising news today when I learned that fourth-year tight end and former five-star signee Baylor Cupp was entering the portal.

The highly-touted tight end was so impressive when he first stepped foot on campus, including having a big spring game debut, but injuries kept him from having any real impact in Aggieland. First, a broken leg suffered in fall camp cost him his true freshman season, which led to him being passed up by fellow 2019 signee Jalen Wydermyer. He was lost for the year again prior to the 2020 campaign (again in fall camp) and finally saw the field last season in very limited action. This spring ,Cupp was again battling injury while competing for playing time with several tight ends, including rapidly-emerging true freshman Jake Johnson when he decided it was time for a change of scenery.

It'll be interesting to see if Cupp - someone who everyone in the country recruited - aims high or if he looks for a landing spot where he's most likely to see the field from day one. The talent is and always has been there but he's just not been able to stay on the field long enough to progress as a player.

For the Aggies, this is the second five-star transfer this week, something that Longhorn fans will try to exploit (because the lower-rung fans on twitter actually believe they're impacting the process). The reality, however, is that both Cupp and Demond Demas - for entirely different reasons - simply hadn't panned out to this point and were going to have a difficult time nailing down starting positions. It's just the reality of the situation. And if you're wondering about the Ags' five-star track record, look no further than Kenyon Green, DeMarvin Leal, Bryce Foster and Jaylon Jones.

...not to mention how good Evan Stewart, Conner Weigman, Denver Harris, Shemar Turner and Tunmise Adeleye have looked this spring. Or Jake Johnson, for that matter, a high four-star who may or may not have factored into Cupp's ultimate decision.

Keep on eye on Baylor, because if he makes the right choice in program and can stay healthy, he still has a bright future ahead of him.

And this is out of Jimbo's hand as far as the discipline goes if I'm not mistaken (for now). The process has to play out and it's up to the university to conduct (or complete) the investigation/process first. Needless to say, Fisher's decision is a mere formality if I'm correct here and he can't yet levy disciplinary action. He's obviously suspended from the program while suspended from the university and I don't see any way both of those things don't end up becoming permanent.

Still think the university needs to leak less but there's always someone up there willing to talk.

Lines of communication are still open with all three of the remaining targets and I still feel good about where the Ags stand with Florida five-star Shemar Stewart. Lots of confidence on the Bayou today as it pertains to Harold Perkins but, again, there's really no telling where he lands.

The most interesting news of the day seems to center around Jacoby Mathews. Word out of Gainesville is that the national top-100 prospect informed the Gators they were no longer in the running, making this one an A&M-LSU battle. I said yesterday that the Ags had more reason for optimism here than most were giving them credit for. Since that time, Maroon & White momentum has built considerably. Fisher and the Ags still need to reach the finish line here but A&M may well have the inside track as we approach the tape.

  5. Spoiler
Obviously, the Ags have been focused on three and only three targets since the early signing period in December. I mentioned back then that I didn't expect the Aggies to add any names to their January close-out list and that's exactly how things have played out, as Jimbo Fisher and Co. have kept the focus squarely on Shemar Stewart, Jacoby Mathews and one-time commitment Harold Perkins. I suppose we can now officially include current Class of '23 No. 1 Lebbeus Overton, as well. The five-star defensive end out of Georgia intends to reclassify, something the Ags have been aware of for a while, so there's a spot for him in the Ags' No. 1 2022 class, as well.

With about 36 hours until National Signing Day, let's take a quick look at where the Ags stand with each as Fisher and his staff look to put the finishing touches on what still may very well rank as the highest-graded class in the modern era of recruiting.

If I were assessing the Ags' chances tonight, my list would look like this:

    Shemar Stewart
    Jacoby Mathews
    Harold Perkins

Shemar Stewart visited Miami this past weekend and was at Georgia before that. Pretty formidable opposition when you consider the Dawgs are the newly-crowned champions and The U got a desperately-needed shot in the arm when they pulled Mario Christobal away from Oregon. Still, the Aggies have been in a very good spot with the five-star defensive lineman for a long, long time now and I like A&M's chances to add a national top-10 prospect who would not only push the Ags' d-line class into 'best ever assembled' territory but also take the overall class to No. 1, all-time.

Jacoby Mathews' recruitment has become very interesting of late. A&M, LSU and Florida appear to be the last teams standing. Florida has some confidence here, as does LSU. While 25 years of instinct tells me the four-star safety out of Ponchatoula stays in-state and ends up playing for Grindin' Brian in Baton Rouge, the vibe I've gotten from sources close to the recruitment in the past week or so tells me that the Aggies are still in this one more so than people in the industry (and on the various fan message boards) are giving them credit for. Definitely one worth monitoring over the next day or so.

And then there's Harold Perkins. While Jackson State has been mentioned regularly down the stretch, I still see this one as Florida, LSU and A&M. The Ags have obviously been trending south in this one as NSD approaches but the last few days have seen Fisher, Tyler Santucci and the home state team rally a bit. Florida insiders (and staffers in Gainesville) believe they have the Houston-area five-star all but signed, sealed and delivered but all indications are that's still far from being the case. Like A&M, LSU is a wire-to-wire player and Perk had what some described as a good but not great visit to Bayou Country over the weekend. Despite his (very) public decommitment, the Aggies have never backed off in their pursuit and, as result, are still sitting there as the option not only closest to home, the one he originally chose, the one featuring the class he's most connected to and the one with the staff he has the closest relationships with.

Basically, the Ags have done all they can do and Perkins knows exactly how badly they want him. Gainesville seems to be the most likely destination, but Perkins could easily wake up on Wednesday and decide he wants to stay at home. Then again, he could also go the Zach Evans route and decide to take his one more official and drag things out until he steps foot on campus this summer. Who really knows at this point?

One more point worth sharing is that the A&M staff is in regular communication with all three. We're already well inside that three-day window prior to NSD when you'll routinely see longtime targets suddenly go radio silent if they've eliminated a particular program or if they've made their choice.

The bottom line here is that the Ags are still squarely in the mix for all three of their desired close-out targets. While I'm still sticking with my original prediction that A&M inks one of the three, Fisher and Co. pulling two on Wednesday certainly wouldn't qualify as a shock.

As for Overton, he's likely to officially visit Georgia, perhaps another power program or two and then Aggieland later this spring and make a pre-summer choice. As an early enrollee, he'd arrive on a college campus this summer. The Aggies are in a good spot here and are coming off of an excellent weekend visit and it would come as a pretty significant surprise if the two teams standing on decision day weren't the Aggies and Dawgs.

I like the Maroon & White in this one when the dust finally settles.

We'll have all the latest tomorrow as Brauny, Howell and I sit down for an In-Home Visit.

A couple of things to add:

Tyler Santucci spoke with Harold Perkins on Sunday and on Monday. I'm expecting one more phone call with the A&M staff on Tuesday based on the intel I have.

Also, early indications seem to favor Texas A&M getting the last official visit for LT Overton although nothing is set in stone on that front.

    Howdy Ags!

Just moments ago we launched the next phase of our NIL strategy in the form of a subscription product called Stacked. Stacked will allow Aggie fans to subscribe to content we create in partnership with current A&M athletes. Think: what we did this past fall, but instead of finding companies to sponsor athlete content, you - the TexAgs subscriber - will have the opportunity to fund NIL content too.

Contribute $10, $25, or $100 monthly or $100, $250, or $1,000 annually (your choice) and gain access to athlete content behind the Stacked paywall. Subscribe at the $25 or $100 level and receive some cool merch or some cool signed merch (respectively).

Like our recent NIL efforts, current athletes will be compensated for their time and the use of their name, image, and/or likeness through talent agreements that we negotiate and submit to compliance. Our goal with Stacked is to maximize the amount of money athletes share while doing so in a financially and organizationally sustainable way. With that in mind, our initial commitment for 2022 will be to pay out to athletes at least 75% of what we bring in. The amount TexAgs retains will be used to administer the Stacked service and produce awesome, compelling content.

We intend to engage Aggie athletes across all sports and will ramp up to do that as we understand the fan demand. Also know that there will still be some NIL content made available to premium subscribers and free users, but the paywall is important because we are making a service to which we believe Aggies will truly want to subscribe.

For more details about Stacked and how to get started today, check out our Stacked subscribe and about pages in the new Stacked section here on TexAgs. Please note that when you subscribe, your current TexAgs subscription will restart so that both it and your new Stacked subscription are in sync. You will be automatically credited for anytime remaining on your current subscription.

One last thing, why the name Stacked? Because we believe Stacked best captures this new TexAgs effort: to build a solid, sustainable, and successful NIL service, that when combined with all the other strengths of the maroon & white, stacks the deck in our favor. Now let's go!!

This was a reply I had written up to an earlier post discussing Bama fans crying foul as they watch Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies inch closer to securing the highest-rated recruiting class of all-time. It also comes on the heels of the ridiculous '$25-$30MM' NIL rumor that Sooner fans have passed around and pushed to go viral over the past two days. Rather than let it be buried in the thread, I figured most of you would enjoy the discussion and didn't want anyone to miss it.

    Here you go:

Welcome to the world of the haves, ladies and gents.

As I've already said, Bama doesn't fear Texas A&M but - between this year's walk-off win and the way the 2022 recruiting classes shook out - you can bet your ass that the Aggies have the attention of the Crimson Tide.

With that will come all of the accusations of paying players, including ridiculously false numbers like '$25-30 million.' It's amazing coming from fanbases (and even site moderators in some instances) of teams like Bama, Georgia, LSU and OU. LSU??? Does 'Our Lady of the Lake' or Will Wade ring a bell? Bama? We talking about the same program that the rumor for the past few years - pre-NIL, mind you - has been that the Tide are operating with a $2-3 million 'salary cap?' I'm not saying that's true, and frankly I don't believe it is, but my point is that when you're recruiting at this level, those coming up way short (Texas and OU, I'm talking to both of you) are going to accuse you of nefarious tactics. Dabo Swinney and Clemson became famously defensive several years ago and now I'm even seeing some Tiger talking heads in my mentions for the first time, accusing the Ags of cheating. Wonder what kind of 'NIL deals' that entire 2018 defensive line worked out behind the scenes that convinced all four starters to return and, in a couple of cases, pass up top-15 money.

...and don't even get me started on my buddies in Austin. You know, the same group that openly bragged about 'Horns for Heart' or the pancake factory of whatever the hell they were calling it while openly campaigning to buy prospects via social media? Also the same group that celebrated signing Quinn Ewers for 'first round money' and has fully embraced the concept of paying whatever it takes to dig Sark out of the deep hole he and his staff plummeted into this fall.

Oklahoma??? The Sooners, who have been the most vocal lately when it comes to questioning the validity of the Ags' success on the recruiting trail, have a real mess on their hands and are currently lashing out at everyone and everything. The boys of Big Red Auto and Barry Switzer are tweeting through it this past month, trying to convince themselves that they're better off with Brent Venables and Dillon Gabriel than they were with Drifit Riley and Caleb Williams. It's been wild to watch a proud program coming off of an 11-2 season spiral so badly that even the 5-7 Longhorns sense blood in the water. Maybe the Sooner faithful should worry more about cringe-worthy press releases following a player entering the portal and less about Jimbo and A&M kicking the ever-living crap out of them in the recruiting arena.

They're going to do everything they can to keep A&M from ascending to the upper-echelon, folks. This is simply the first step from a few moderators at fan sites and a bunch of loudmouths who will believe whatever they're told on social media. In the meantime, all the Ags can do is continue to recruit at the highest level and start becoming bigger winners on the field. The 2020 season and this year's win over Bama have to serve as the launching off point, as it goes without saying that expectations are about to be at an all-time high in College Station and everyone is (clearly) lining up to see Fisher and the Aggies fail.

The thing everyone tweeting their thumbs to the bone over this either don't see or aren't bothering to acknowledge is that Fisher and the Aggies have been building to this for quite some time (and long before NIL was ever a thing).

In his head coaching career, Jimbo Fisher's complete classes have ranked 4, 11, 4, 3, 3, and 6 at FSU and 4, 6, 8 and now 1 in Aggieland. That's an AVERAGE class ranking of 5 over a ten-year stretch at two different schools. Jimbo has always been an elite recruiter, dating back to his days as Nick Saban's top assistant at LSU...a fact that folks seem to have conveniently forgotten of late.

A full year ago, I was pretty outspoken about the stated goal in Bright. The Aggies believed they had an excellent look at signing the No. 1 class in the nation in 2022 and they were going to go for it. An absolutely loaded crop of talent in Houston was going to be the foundation and Fisher's staff had already proven capable of doing heavy lifting throughout the SEC footprint and even in the Northeast.

Closing out last year by adding several Houston-area standouts, including five-stars LJ Johnson, Bryce Foster and Tunmise Adeleye set the stage in the Bayou City and the Ags then kicked things off by landing Katy blue chips Bobby Taylor and Malick Sylla, the Dickinson duo of Donovan Green and PJ Williams and, not long after that, superstar QB Conner Weigman. The ball was rolling early and, today, the Ags' 12-man haul from the city of Houston alone would rank as the No. 10 class in America, one spot behind Michigan and one spot ahead of Oklahoma.

That momentum started during and following the 2020 season. Rival fans can discount it all they want, but the Aggies spent most of the 2022 cycle recruiting juniors and then seniors-to-be during a 9-1 run to the Orange Bowl, six weeks of playoff contention and a top-5 finish. After that, they were recruiting throughout an off-season of high expectations and top-10, SEC title-contending talk. Things obviously didn't go according to plan in the fall when Haynes King was lost in game two and the Ags dropped back-to-back games to open SEC play but the stunning, walk-off win over Bama came exactly two weeks after A&M fell to Arkansas. With damn near every priority target in the stands at Kyle Field when Seth Small drilled the field goal to beat Nick Saban and the Tide, the Aggies were right back in the center of the conversation. They stayed there for six more weeks, including another big win over Auburn in a battle of top-15 teams in an electric Kyle Field. What am I getting at? Texas A&M had it rolling and was regularly mentioned alongside the likes of Bama, Georgia, Clemson and Ohio State for damn near the entirety of the '22 cycle. They were out of the conversation for only two weeks in September and then again for the final two weeks of the season. By then, however, Maroon momentum was a snowball rolling downhill, as the Aggie commits and longtime priority targets were locked in, had known where they wanted to play for quite some time and had the added incentive of being part of the highest-rated recruiting class of all-time.

It's not that hard to figure out. You have to go out of your way to blow past the obvious en route to your '$30 million conspiracy theory,' in fact.

And remember, there's this thing called 'loser's limp.' You've all heard of it. It's very popular amongst college football coaches/recruiters and has been for decades. I've heard many an A&M coach go that route over the years and I've heard countless coaches from other programs lean on the tried and true "they dropped a bag" line whenever a coveted prospect signs elsewhere. The Ags didn't do a lot of losing this year and, as a result, you're seeing the other side limping around. The result is what you're seeing from these various fanbases and even rival site moderators is "I know someone who knew someone who heard..." Alabama in no way 'lost' in a recruiting cycle that has the Tide currently sitting at No. 2, but they wanted Denver Harris and Anthony Lucas in the worst way down the stretch and also did all they could to sign several other Aggies, including one-time Bama commit Le'Veon Moss. Georgia is sitting at No. 3 but the Dawgs desperately tried to flip Smoke Bouie back, coveted Enai White and lost Marquis Groves-Killebrew to the Ags on NSD. Texas? Where to begin. Name an A&M signee and Steve Sarkisian and the Horns probably wanted him. That's what happens when you sign 20 prospects ranked among the nation's top-102 versus something like three in Austin. OU and LSU? Head coaching changes certainly hurt momentum on the Sooner and Bayou Bengal side but that doesn't change the fact that Ags lapped both of their regional rivals in this year's recruiting race, which has left the folks in Norman and Baton Rouge limping around more so than anyone else.

Bring on the hate. All of it. It's pretty entertaining to watch.

  10. Spoiler

Three weeks ago, Max Johnson completed a fourth-down pass to keep LSU's comeback hopes alive, and a few plays later, he fired a perfect sideline strike to Jaray Jenkins for the game-winning score with just 20 seconds left. As fate would have it, Max Johnson's next pass will be for the team he beat at Death Valley and not against them.

On Friday, two days after signing his younger brother, Jake Johnson‍, Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies welcomed the former Tiger quarterback into the fold. Max had entered the portal following the coaching change in Baton Rouge, and neither he nor Fisher wasted any time in making the in-division transfer official.

I really don't know that Fisher and the Aggies could have found a better fit than the battle-tested former Bayou Bengal. He's going to fit in seamlessly with the offense and the Aggie quarterback room.

The runway for Max to land in Aggieland opened up earlier this week when Zach Calzada announced his intentions to transfer, leaving Fisher and the A&M offense with a pretty gaping roster hole at quarterback.

As things stood, the Ags were at risk of entering the season with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, something that nearly proved disastrous this fall. Haynes King — who won the starting job and has everyone in the program buzzing now that he's returned to practice after missing around three months due to a broken leg suffered in week two — and newly-signed Conner Weigman‍ meant that the Ags were entering the spring with two insanely talented signal-callers, one of whom is beyond ready to show what he can do in Fisher's offense.

However, two simply is not enough, and once Calzada left, it became obvious that the Aggies needed to add an experienced quarterback to the roster to both compete to start and add depth.

I'm not sure the Ags could have done any better than Max Johnson in this instance.

The son of Super Bowl champion quarterback Brad Johnson, Max will prove a quick study in Fisher's pro-style offense. He also has more than a full season of starting experience in the Southeastern Conference, with wins over A&M, Florida (twice) and Mississippi State under his belt.

This fall, as a sophomore, Max threw for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns against just six interceptions. His best outings included a 306-yard, three-touchdown effort in the win over A&M, throwing for 280 and four touchdowns in a win over State and a 372-yard, five-score effort vs. Central Michigan. In his last two games on the Bayou (A&M and ULM), Max passed for 625 yards and five touchdowns without a turnover.

    TexAgs
2022 tight end Jake Johnson signed with Texas A&M on Wednesday and will be an early enrollee.

As a freshman in 2020, Max ended the year with a couple of pretty spectacular efforts for a spiraling LSU team. The first came when he led the Tigers to a stunning upset of then No. 6 Florida in The Swamp, throwing for 239 yards and three touchdowns. A week later, Max and LSU won a shootout against Matt Corrall and Ole Miss, with the 6-5, 220-pounder throwing for 435 yards and three scores. In his only game at Kyle Field, Johnson was impressive off the bench, leading LSU to a last-minute score, preventing a Wrecking Crew shutout.

Again, I really don't know that Fisher and the Aggies could have found a better fit than the battle-tested former Bayou Bengal. He's going to fit in seamlessly with the offense and the Aggie quarterback room.

Wednesday, the Ags sent shockwaves across the recruiting world when they inked Max's younger brother Jake, the nation's top-ranked tight end prospect and a longtime LSU pledge out of Oconee County High School in Bogart, Georgia. To the delight of Fisher and the offensive staff, the Johnsons will now both be wearing Maroon & White and will arrive on campus in January.

They always seemed to give Texas more of a shot than the Aggies in this particular recruitment for whatever reason. It is what it is and the Ags just needed to move on and close out a hell of a defensive back haul, which they had done for months since Brooks originally chose Ohio State. The Brooks camp flirted with an OV last weekend but cancelled it when Elko left for Duke.

Guys, the Aggies are trying to sign the No. 1 class in all of college football. They're recruiting some of the top prospects in America...guys who are being pursued by literally everyone. We're talking about the most competitive recruitments imaginable. You know what's going on behind the scenes as programs around the SEC and down to Austin try to convince some of these guys to change their minds before Wednesday. My advice is to consume all of the info, ride the roller coaster and buckle up. I think the Ags are going to come out of it sitting squarely in the top three if not No. 1 overall. I can also tell you that panicking and running for the cliffs - here or on social media - isn't the best look and it does matter because certain folks will use anything they can as a chance to stoke the fires in the recruiting arena.

Just like in this particular instance. I think it's all going to be good with Walter come Wednesday and these reports will prove to be nothing but a giant distraction.

Really liking where things are trending with guys like Dewberry and Denver. That's significant because Texas had in-house visits with both just prior to the weekend. And the Aggies are in excellent position with Lucas and White as we approach three days until NSD. Shemar Stewart's visit is going incredibly well, but he's still going to wait until February to sign anywhere.

As Brauny and I have both stated more than once, the early returns from the class is that they all would have loved to have seen Elko remain in Aggieland, they're very comfortable with the message from Jimbo Fisher and the Aggie staff. The defenders in the class all sound quite solid.

Told you guys this was something to watch. Pete Thamel just reported it and it comes moments after I had heard that Duke had formally approached A&M for 'permission to speak' (for lack of better phrasing).

Like I said more than once of late, it felt like he had passed up some jobs, didn't see his name come up for some of the bigger ones this time around and was just ready to take the reins of a Power 5 program. I also think the idea of moving back to that part of the country is something that really appealed to the four-year Aggie DC. I suppose something crazy could happen at the finish line but it's doubtful and this sounds done.

I'll obviously have plenty to report on tonight and through the weekend but it's actually not the worst thing that this get out while so many guys are on campus. Gives Jimbo, Elijah and the staff plenty of time with the prospects and their families to assure them that they'll go out and make a home run hire, much like Fisher did with Elko, Jeremy Pruitt and Mark Stoops prior to this search.

Not the news anyone wanted to hear but I'll be very interested to see which direction Fisher goes in swinging to replace one top-10 DC with another. He'll have a blank checkbook and is considered one of the best head coaches to work for in that role because he's about as hands-off as a successful head coach gets when it comes to having anything to do with the defense.

Brauny and Howell will be talking to all of the recruits this weekend and into next week, obviously.
