Because he quite literally has them by the balls. If it comes out he turned them down, A&M is on their 3rd choice at best. Can they handle the public humiliation?

This right here. You want to keep the guy that probably has texts and emails implicating god knows who in the coaching staff and/or AD happy. Especially if he was directed by said individuals to share information with other teams.

You don't fire that guy until you are certain he's been made the happiest Wolverine fan he can be.

If you don't think football conference championship games matter then that's your shitty opinion to have, but don't act like it should be any sort of popular opinion. The hardware that goes in the trophy room that you get to show to recruits, the giant ring you get to wear into recruits houses right before the early signing period while other coaches are having to game plan along with recruit, the extra week of rest, the time afforded for players to not have to worry about game prep while taking finals, the guarantee of not having to play on the road or get a more difficult draw because you're seeded lower in the playoff, only having to win 3 playoff games instead of 4, the money paid in bonuses to the coaches for the the championship win & likely making it to the quarterfinals, and whatever else I missed that people can think of.

Fans don't typically like watching teams tank on purpose, but when you tank in a conference championship game I couldn't imagine the outrage. And where exactly would it stop? You sit the QB because he's the star but what about the LT, WR, LB, CB? What's the locker room attitude when you work all year only for the coaches to decide that one individual (or 2 or 3) are too important to risk in the fucking conference championship game so everything they preached about being a team, sacrificing for the program, playing every game like it's the most important game ever, & everything else coaches say to motivate & create team chemistry & unity was just a bunch of bullshit?

Edit: You probably wouldn't have a ring to wear into recruits house just the bragging rights, but you get the idea.

I'm simply saying that look at TCU. They won absolutely nothing this year.

But you know why they're doing so well? They won a playoff game.

Years ago we were outraged McCaffrey sat out a bowl game. Why would players, coaches, administrators,  or even fans at a certain point care about an outdated Seeding game?

If you are going to get rid of crowing a conference champion, then what's the point of even having conferences?  TV slots?

College football regular season intensity is already taking a bit of a hit with the expanded playoff (which I'm fine with, don't misread what I'm saying).  But if you take away the conference championship variable, then you take away even more of the appeal and fervor towards the college football season.  At that point, might as well just start the 64 team bracket in September and turn the entire season into one big tournament bracket.

Conferences matter for more than just TV and revenue.  That championship means something.

That's exactly what I'm saying. If you're in the playoff, you're going to make every step to make sure you win. Fans used to love Bowl Games, but they're just an audition for everyone not going pro now.

This idea that conference championships matter is a remnant. Look at TCU this year. How many folk outside hard-core fans care that they won absolute butkis? They got to the game. Conference champion was...Baylor? Maybe?

  5. Dunno. To me it seems that winning the playoff is the #1 priority. While I get winning the conference championship is a big deal right now, I don't know if that'll be the case in a few years. I get seeding and home field advantage, but is the SEC seeded #1 playing against the #12 at large (probably SEC or Big 10) any different than being the SEC #7 playing at a g5 seeded #7 if winning the whole thing is your objective?

  6. 1 minute ago, hook me said:

Only conference champions can get a bye week & there's no guarantee that the loser of the title game would be a 5-8 seed which play the first round game at home. Also, conference championships usually come with a nice bonus for the HC as well as recruiting usefulness and, as always, bragging rights.

Say you're the clear #1 going into the SEC Championship game. Been throttling everyone all year long, NC is all but inevitable. Then in the 4th quarter in a close game, your star QB gets his knee blown out, done for the playoffs.

You're still going to the playoffs, but now with almost no chance to win.

    Is the fanbase happy?

    Money.

Sure, but wouldn't it make more sense to rest your starters for the more meaningful games ahead? I get Seeding and whatnot, but playing as a 1- 4 seed shouldn't be much of a difference, compared to risking injury.

  8. Quick question that I'm sure has been answered somewhere in the past 500 or so pages.

What exactly is the point of an SEC or Big 10 Conference Championship game in a 12 team playoff era? Unless something catastrophic has happened, all four teams in those games should be already qualified to be in the playoff, regardless of the outcome. Is there any incentive (other than pride) in playing your starters in that game?

  9. Apple TV is just such a terrible idea for CFB. As far as I know, streaming services can't legally be shown in bars. So the only people who are going to watch your games are the people at home that actively seek them out and pay for them.

No, I get that. But I know what a university president’s schedule and workload is like. Not sure how spending time on your previous school’s message board fits into his priorities.

The man has to take a shit at some point. And we have smart phones now, no more reading the Lysol bottle.

I am personally hoping that OU draws Arkansas instead of a&m just so they don't get another game in the state of Texas every year.

I mean, it doesn't really matter. We're the same distance from Austin to DFW. Playing in Waco, College Station, or Lubbock hasn't really improved our recruiting presence in Texas to any significant degree since we were in the Big 8, and only occasionally played in Texas other than Dallas.

I'd rather play Arkansas in the first place, because A&M is weird and the less we have to do with them the better. Every other year in College Station doesn't really put Oklahoma in any better spot than playing there every 4 years.

With regard to Bama/LSU going away and competitive balance… I don’t think you can plan it out that way. Tennessee has been shit for forever until this year and Auburn is on their third coach in four years. You just can’t tell who is going to be good year to year. And if you check Alabama’s schedule even this year, they have auburn, tn, lsu and… Texas.  I think you’re more likely to see less ambitious ooc scheduling going forward, especially when the sec bullshit late season cream puff disappears.

Also, as much as we look at history and rivalries and tradition, we shouldn’t overlook the real driver in all of this and that’s the tv networks. I imagine espn is pushing the agenda to get as many great matchups as possible each year. Bama v Mississippi State just isn’t going to move the needle like Bama v LSU. Why wouldn’t they want that game every year instead? And this applies conference wide. Auburn should play Georgia, Bama and Florida. Florida should play auburn, Georgia and Tennessee. A&M should should play lsu, ou and Texas. Who isn’t going to tune in to those games every week?

As long as it’s not impacting playoff berths, the conference should be good with this too. There’s going to be a pretty good argument that three loss sec teams are going to get in over some one loss teams around the country.

Hell look at the Big 12 when it was created. The North was the toughest division in football. Nebraska was at their peak, Colorado was 6 years removed from a national title, and K State was a legit contender. The South was a mess, OU was at their lowest point in history, Texas was floundering, Tech was pre Leach, OSU was somehow still worse than OU, Baylor was Baylor. A&M was the only competitive team in the bunch.

    Things change.

a lot of people give a shit. if you give them a random Miss St or UK, thats an easy win. They need to get Florida to make it even. The 3+6 is fun and keep most rivalries but some teams are going to get a much harder draw than others. Someone will get screwed

I don't care who we get. We've got "history" with Missouri in the same way we have history with Kansas, Iowa State, et al. Nobody cares.

I'd love to have Arkansas, simply because proximity and all of the bullshit the hogs have flung at OU in the past. But suddenly, they're too busy?

Worse case for everyone is we get the dregs and end up with two guaranteed wins every year.

  15. Another thing is how many bars are going to be showing PAC games on Amazon. Lord knows most waitresses and bartenders have a hard enough time figuring out which channel a network is on as is. And that's just with cable.

Throw in trying to figure out how to switch inputs is going to cause serious problems in the food and beverage industry.

Yes. And I wouldn't be sitting here bitching that they wouldn't play us. ou chose texas over us, and that's 100% fine. But don't come back acting like it's our fault. You want to guarantee that bedlam takes place? Don't leave the league. It's that simple.

Nobody is doing that. We left, asked if y'all wanted to keep playing, y'all said you were fine with the Murray State Racers instead, we said OK and that's pretty much that.

I don't see where the animosity is coming from.

Or, you know, he's lying. JFC, after all the back and forth you went through with aggy about that game, you think you'd know by know everything being said is bs. There's certainly truth to the logistical issues, but what a dumbass concept to believe it's all on us and we just don't want to play the game. Give me a fucking break. Also, they're the ones fucking leaving, that is why the game is dying. Either way, like I said, I guarantee it will start up again within a decade.

Like I said, I don't really care about the blame. There's rumblings of us and Nebraska getting an annual game during SEC Rivalry Week (whatever that is), a game that last week drew 3.5 million viewers (2nd most watched game) as a blowout. I think the Network Overlords at ESPN and Fox would like to both have a piece of that.

Am I sad that it's ending? Sure. The game was typically a lot of fun and the week of and the Monday after are a blast. And I imagine that whatever the CFB landscape looks like after the ACC GOR is over, we'll be playing annually again as well.

So Gundy might win one more game each year now. Smart move.  Straight up pussy shit from both schools. OU wants a cheap buy a win now. Both schools can keep playing. They just prefer the cash they'll get from some shitty opponent ensuring a home game each year over trading off hosting a rivalry game.

OSU is just being pissy about it. Which is fine, except I have no idea how they are going to sell season tickets now that they aren't the only way to get an OU ticket.

I think if they and/or the Big 12 find a partner to come with them, they'll be the first shoe to drop.  They're the most in danger of being left out altogether if they are complacent AND their fans would embrace the move more enthusiastically than any other potential addition from the PAC due to the massive basketball upgrade.

If Yormark can't find a PAC partner for Arizona, he should go get SDSU to come with them.  Together, those two give the Big 12 two more late window schools for football, two more good basketball and football fits, a flag in a new Big TV market, a flag in a good recruiting footprint, and it would simultaneously force the PAC to add one while taking their preferred G5 addition off the board.

Yeah, get San Diego State in with Baylor. Rapetastic conference, right there.

We are already seeing the national footprint expand in recruiting for both schools. Yes, Riley kind of fucked OUs west coast pipeline, but OU should be able to open new territories pretty effectively to the east and the north. Texas has expanded into the SEC territories with surprising speed, picking up some top tier players out of LA, MS, GA, and FL in the last two cycles. We match up very well on the recruiting front with those in state schools.

Riley's Big California Haul of three 5 star receivers turned out to be a wash out, an armed robber, and a guy that can't stay healthy. I much prefer going after defensive talent in SEC land over the California kids.

The okies I know have been bitching about their home schedule for years. Not surprising 0u has been pushing to make a move for over a decade. Pac, B1G, or SEC...it didn't make a shit to them.

Believe it or not, we weren't exactly thrilled to replace Nebraska, A&M, and Colorado with TCU and West Virginia. Aside from OSU, the only marquis conference game we had left was Texas, which obviously is not a home game. Playing home and homes against Ohio State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, etc. left a gaping hole in the away side of those seasons.

Added to the fact that being in a conference considered "lesser" was appalling. Losing recruits that simply preferred to be in the SEC year in and year out was getting old. I'm honestly surprised that it took as long as it did to make the move.

  22. The major factor of the Big 12 falling apart was the abject failure of the Big 12 North after 2002. Winners get eyeballs, wins out almost as much as pussy.

Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas State nosedived from Must Watch National games every week to just their core fan bases. You cant tell me that a Big 12 with Nebraska, KSU, and CU at the same level that OU, UT, A&M, Tech, and OSU were pulling wouldn't be the by far premiere conference in the country.

Every team has it's floor. Texas, A&M, Ohio State, and maybe Michigan have the highest. Everyone else has to win to get eyeballs to stay off the floor. Nobody was watching Alabama in the early 2000s.
