Montana State's QB getting hurt took all the juice out of this game. Montana State's defense had been awesome this year, but just got fuckin' dump trucked today.

The playoff committee was backed into a no-win corner this year. Sam Houston was at best the fifth best team in the country, but had won 21 straight games, James Madison's conference wasn't as good as it normally is and NDSU's loss to South Dakota State was pretty definitive so Sam Houston kinda had to be the one seed. The committee maybe should've made JMU the four seed just to put them on the other side of the bracket from North Dakota State, but other than that I'm not sure what else you could do to get a competitive title game. South Dakota State was probably one of the three best teams, but fucked themselves in the regular season and had to play back-to-back-to-back road games and it's just possible they ran out of gas in the semis.

North Dakota State is FCS Thanos, they are inevitable, but I just wish it had been a better game.

I was at game.  It was a fun and festive crowd but wow it wasn’t much of a game.  It was devastating that Montana State lost their stud QB to injury on their first possession.  I really thought Montana State’s defense would be better but NDSU ran the ball down their throats ..

Did you do the upper bowl and/or the lone peak tram lift?

Skied the upper bowls but I didn’t drop the $40 to ride the Lone Peak Tram.  No major pow dump when I was there so no need to go up there this time...good conditions overall, bitter cold last few days but snow is very25A8A486-6D13-467C-8F7D-879539455FFC.thumb.jpeg.ecf5b2f7516681326095900af468816c.jpeg soft.

Thank you and everyone for all the input. How does Taos village compare to Keystone or Breckenridge?  We don't need fancy but do what the kids to have a great time.

It has been 10 years or so since I have been to Breck or Keystone so I really can’t give up to date info on them  but I have to believe they both Would be better choices for first timer kids and wife as far as variety of lodging choices,  restaurants, activities  etc.  I can speak for Taos Ski Valley as I spend 20-30 days a year there.  It is fairly quaint with only 4-5 restaurants and 5-10 hotels or condos to choose from  and a few shops but fairly spartan as far as kids go.  The only exception for  the kids in TSV would be the newly built The Blake Hotel which is a 4 star slopeside that has heated hot tubs  and outdoor pool, spa, outdoor ice skating rink and restaurant which would give kids something to do all in one location.  Staying in TSV is also generally more pricey with less options than staying in the town of Taos  The town of Taos is a 20 mile drive down/up the mountain.  The town of Taos is a rustic dusty high desert town and  has more options for shopping, several really good restaurants and some world class art galleries and museums.  Overall I think Breck or Keystone would be more accommodating for first timers than Taos.

For Spring Break skiing, altitude is your friend. Snow is better at the higher elevation resorts. Taos in NM, Telluride and A Basin in CO.

This is the best answer for the Southern Rockies...CO, NM whatever, doesn't matter.  Find a resort with elevation and you are going to always be better off...especially in Spring.  For example, Taos is one of the highest elevation ski resorts in the Lower 48 - the base area starts at 9200' asl and goes up from there -you are skiing at 11,500 at top of Chair 4 and over 12,400  at Kachina Peak and Taos' mostly north facing slopes are legendary for preserving powder for weeks at high elevation after a big dump and late in the season - most other lower elevation resorts (Angel Fire, Red River, etc) cannot preserve it that well...and you have to be an above average skier to ski most of the these resorts and their good stuff the later the season gets. That is why I am always baffled why a beginner or once a year skier that is at intermediate level worries about snow conditions - I mean really, nuancing the groomed bunny slopes and green/blues is kinda funny...My advice for beginners and once a year intermediates is to focus on the the ski area that has everything else you want...budget, fancy, restaurants, extra curricular activities, etc. because trying to pick a resort and what snow conditions will be there in March is a crap shoot and you just might get lucky and have it all...

Internet is telling me it’s not a good hill for little ones though…

Ski Portillo is definitely family friendly- think of a cruise ship on the snow ...I took my fam in August of 2014 ( kids were 11 and 14 at the time).  Flew into Santiago and shuttled 2 hours north to Portillo- The resort is a stunning yellow hotel on the shores of Inca lake surrounded by the Andes. -it doesn’t get anymore scenic than this setting. This resort is a destination resort meaning that they mostly book week long packages - I don’t think they allow any day skiers or very few people drove up there to ski for the day so only week guests are present - no crowds due to set amount of weekly bookings.    They have a very good ski school for kids and some nice blue runs and an abandoned train tunnel you can ski thru in the kiddie slopes.  The hotel reminded me of the 50’s style of European elegance that  was slightly worn but well kept with an historic feel . It has an amazing dining room overlooking Inca Lake.  The packages include all meals- breakfast , lunch, apres afternoon tea and snacks, and dinner.  You are assigned a table for the week and after a few days you get to know everyone around you-the kids easily met other kids to hang out with. The Chef prepared food was excellent and service is excellent -  I think there is one staff member for every guest....  There are guests from all over the world.... Aussies, Brazilians, Argentinians, and Americans seemed to be the majority.  The rooms are euro spartan with no TV’s and we enjoyed that.  It has ski weeks featuring Nightly  Chilean wine tastings (we did this one) and other weekly themes.  The hotel has bars, a full sized gym with climbing wall, pool tables, ping pong, and daily scheduled indoor activities for kids - even baking classes in the kitchen with the chef.   The coolest feature is the outdoor heated pool and hot tubs that overlook Lake Inca - stunning views while having a drink in hot tub.  There is some steep terrain and can satisfy the most advanced skier with probably  less for the beginner but the Overall experience is amazing.  Our family thoroughly enjoyed the trip - I will reveal that we are a passionate ski family with the kids getting many ski days yearly and they grew up skiing at our place in Taos since they were 3 yrs old so our kids are advanced skiers which makes for fun times when traveling to areas that have challenging terrain.  Also , the Poma    lifts at Portillo to the more challenging terrain were  insane!  Think water  skiing on skis going about 20 mph uphill at a 45 degree angle .  Highly recommend Portillo.FD1A77DB-5FDA-41D3-8AC9-6592DFAAEF4E.thumb.jpeg.a327482ca0e94f867371db0bb173d6ab.jpeg0AF1408E-4363-4256-8317-D0B8C5771760.thumb.jpeg.44eb7707dac4cff9ec7da3d05f9114af.jpeg3F5967E3-F2D2-4EBB-8E65-D142FE9F578A.thumb.jpeg.c8e97561af7b84dc094c00df0ea87c07.jpeg

Man, Montana (the state in general) is a place I really want to go watch a game. Every picture I see at UM and MSU is insane.

Yes it’s scenic in all directions but can be chilly!  Great venue for sure.  BB963C34-4F63-41EE-AB24-B27A47E4FB01.thumb.jpeg.0031ef6e0977febc2847037a5bfd9c19.jpeg24F76E4D-7F85-4239-973C-B38BB67A8135.thumb.jpeg.fef189108e69bc2391c909f6e4459ff2.jpeg

  8. Disney Pro Tip - If you have any knee surgeries or other medical issues that will require you to be on crutches, I would suggest you have it done right before you go, just make sure you are on crutches.  Then, upon entry, go to Guest Services and request handicap status.  Its better than a fast pass!   10 years ago my wife had knee surgery about 6 months before we went and she donned her knee brace and crutches to prepare for the arduous trek across the Park with our then 12 and 10 year olds.  Shortly after we entered the Park, a Guest Services employee noticed my wife hobbling around on crutches and told her to follow her to Guest Services, we couldnt believe when they offered the Handicap Pass to us and we initially refused but they would not take NO for an answer so we obliged and rode about 30 rides that day waiting no more than 1-2 minutes at a time - best Disney experience ever!  CSB

Is there not a 2021/2022 ski season thread ?

Trips booked in late January, and March to Breck.

February RV ski safari in Co. route to be determined.

April RV ski safari from Maine back down thru Vermonts corn snow season.

    Mondays in Snowshoe.

The goal is a min of 45 days this season.  Need to get those days in while I can still get after it the way I want to.

    XMAS week - Taos

New Years Week - Bridger Bowl and Big Sky MT

    MLK - Taos

    Pres Day - Taos

Spring and Late Spring - Backcountry Ski/Road Trips planned in NM CO and MT

Goal is 25+ days this year (17 last year).  Ditto on getting days in while you can still get after it...My ski buddy convinced me of going for it in your late 40's and 50's because you are only one injury away from not being able to ski the terrain we currently do...Good advice and this philosophy worked on the wifey (no pics) when I convinced her to let me go heli skiing in Alaska a few year ago 😊

Haha he was a little gun "shy" - That was the only flattering photo I had of this "shy" buck.  He was quartered away from me so my heart/shoulder shot exited thru his chest making a nasty hole, dignifiedly hidden in this photo.

Keep watching snow cams and, man, CO and NM are looking sparse.  They need some snow and temps have not been cooperating at all.  Meanwhile, another season where we won't go skiing in Europe and some places are looking awesome!

Looks bleak at the moment.  Im headed to Taos for a few days before Christmas and Big Sky right after thru New Years....Not expecting much at Taos although it has been really good around Christmas for the last few years but it will need big dumps real quick to get right, hopefully Big Sky delivers...

  12. As mentioned, Santa Fe would be a nice choice.  Jackson Hole would be another one - direct flights, Grand Teton Park close and Yellowstone,  and the town has enough interesting restaurants and bars for 3-4 days worth - but grizzly bears...haha.  My #1 recommendation would be Bozeman, MT - again...grizzlies but easy access airport, this college town is large enough to support many good restaurants and pubs. several outstanding micro brew pubs, and hiking trails in town and within minutes of town.  Many vacation rentals due to proximity to Big Sky Ski Area and YNP.

  13. There are so many predators at our place, buzzards, yotes, hogs, mtn lions this poor deer didn’t have a chance.  I had passed this spot a week earlier and this leg wasn’t there so this happened in one week or less!  My buddy shot a hog last year and ran to the barn to get a rope to drag it off and the hogs eyes were eaten out in the 15 minutes he was gone.  Hell im scared to take a nap out there ....might get eaten by something :)0C51EAB6-E5B8-489B-9688-7CE8051E17B4.thumb.jpeg.98cce8de26569876460d3fc30a051d88.jpeg

  14. I was in CB a few weeks ago for my 2nd annual fly fishing trip there.  Same as you I have always skipped it for skiing for whatever reason but it is on my short list....so, I cant help you with any ski tips but I can suggest some good places to eat.  Pro Tip - make reservations in advance for Elk Ave Prime in town of CB - damn good eats.  Secret Stash pizza is solid too.

My aging father has requested a trip to Taos to relive our younger family days, and see all his grandchildren experience his favorite place on Earth. We always stayed at the Rio Hondo Condos growing up so we will likely do that again for nostalgia purposes, and it's good for our family size of 8 adults and 6 kids. Likely going MLK wkd, which isn't ideal, but hoping not the worst time.

My concern is that my Dad obviously can't see the slopes from those condos. On top of that he has pretty limited mobility. He needs his walker or scooter to get around. I haven't been in 25 years. I'm wondering if there's a restaurant or lounge that is handicap accessible where he could set up shop and see the bottom of the slopes. Any thoughts?

The base area at Taos was recently remodeled when they built the new Blake Hotel.  So now you have heated pavement with adirondike chairs and fire pits where he could setup.  Rhoda’s restaurant is also at the base with some inside views as well as an outside patio seating as well.  Since you haven’t been in 25 years and  I understand your nostalgia for rio Hondos but the better handicap hotels with better locations you have about 4 good options based upon your description and really this applies to anyone wanting to be close to slopes in Taos....The Blake Hotel which is the newest and nicest hotel at the base with good views to slopes  but it is pricey.  Taos renovated the base area with heated pavers so handicap friendlier than 25 years ago for sure. The Edelweiss Condos are also slopeside to beginner area (strawberry hill) also very nice and pricey.  The best location on the mountain is the St. Bernard but it is older with many stairways so not sure it is handicap friendly and I think you have to book a week as they don’t accommodate less days for your stay.  Last  but not least choice would be Snakedance Condos- closest to slopes (30 yards from lift 1) and in my opinion the best value and location in Taos.
