  1. I tried to show it to my 7 year old boy and only got through Carentan before my wife caught us and shut it down as too violent.  I conceded mostly because I didn't think he was appreciating the parts of it that come along with the violence-the sacrifice for your comrades in arms, the devotion to the mission, the confusion and fear and how that's normal.  There's a lot to learn and as a parent you almost have to be a commentary track.
I haven't tried to show him The Pacific yet (I was a little underwhelmed, myself), but his great-grandfather survived Bataan so perhaps he'll be more interested.

Your kids gonna love the scene where the blood trickles into the Japs skull, thats been severed in half

One could make the argument that that thing becoming a governor of a state, even as shitty and backwards as Arkansas, is the final nail in the coffin of democracy. Its like why bother with civilization, let alone government. Lets just live in little hamlets.
  3. Imagine being vehemently opposed to pro-Palestinian protesters because of "antisemitism" but being politically aligned with Nazi fucks.

The multidimensional alliances and quagmires of our post 9/11 age is vexing. Its like reading Napoleon’s ascent in Republican France, from a Corsican separatist to French Nationalist/Republican to new royalist.

Im an educated follower of politics and I have no idea whats going on. The grifters are thriving the chaos.

  4. I will never forget when my buddy told me about Rogan's podcast and how good it was.  I listened to his interview with Glenn Greenwald for about 8 minutes and I immediately was like

If you don't immediately understand this is a podcast for abject morons, you are the abject moron.

  6. Yes.  It's wonderful.  Remember, one of the main reasons that we desperately need to elect Trump as POTUS is because "we need a successful businessman as President!"
And nothing says "success" like spending $327 million to make $770k.  It takes a true genius to have costs that are 424X revenues.  If you don't get that, you must be a socialist libtard.

Its the Eskimo Hut model with a dash of the Producers.
  7. Really strange deal at Florida A&M with an Austin connection.  https://www.miamiherald.com/news/state/florida/article288417175.html
Some dude named Greg Gerami announced a $276M donation to FAMU at their commencement ceremony, where he was evidently a speaker.  This would have been the largest single donation to an HBCU in history.
Gerami is the owner of a hemp company "in Austin" called Batterson Farms.  https://www.battersonfarmscorp.com/  But it says San Antonio and Sierra Blanca on the website.
Batterson Farms does not have the website of a company with 276M to donate.  Or even $276.  Gerami is associated with another failed donation to Coastal Carolina.  Also a failed donation to UT.
I suppose any institution can be the victim of a fraudulent or fictitious donation.  But it seems odd that this Gerami dude was the commencement speaker.
I have no idea how this ended up in my Google news but there it is.

Is Gerami pulling a Michael Scott?

  8. Okay that’s insane.
Nintendo said this: As of June 10, 2024, it will no longer be possible to post screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from the Nintendo Switch's Album, or send friend requests to social media users via the Friend Suggestions feature. Find out more: https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/65057
And Twitter said this in response: The gaming community is one of the largest and most vibrant communities on our platform, and we are dedicated to enhancing and supporting gaming-related features. As part of Nintendo's planned discontinuation of sharing content to X from the Nintendo Switch, from June 11th, users will need to download Switch gameplay media directly to their smartphones and share it natively on our platform. We worked together with Nintendo throughout this process to ensure API access for this integration, but ultimately it was a product decision made by Nintendo. Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong, and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users. We will continue collaborating with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.
Community note:  This is in direct response to X changing their API. Specifically, X is charging companies upwards of $40,000 or more per month to access its API. Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox already removed integration with X last year. uk.pcmag.com/sony-playstati… uk.pcmag.com/news/146559/mi… en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/de…

So Twitter has run off the Sony/PlayStation, Microsoft/XBox, and Nintendo platforms from posting directly on Twitter.
All because Twitrer wanted to collect around $1.5 million (or more) a year from Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo, who had made it easy for millions of people to create a shitload of content on Twitter for free.

In 2001, Mack Brown and Greg Davis didnt play one of the greatest Texas running backs Cedric Benson because he was a freshman and maybe didnt know the pass protections. Texas scored 3 points, probably due to a Derrick Johnson forced fumble. This is the equivalent football blunder as Musk running off communities from twitter.

  9. On my recent flight to Phoenix, suffered through a good 1 hour of no a/c on tarmac and then another 45 minutes or so upon descent.

On the way off the plane, a lady passed out. When i finally exited, it felt much cooler in first class. Could this be my imagination that first class was cooled and schlubs got nada?

Gonna need to dust off my copy of Das Kapital. This is an outrage!

  10. The stepmom, in particular, was a fascinating story as was the Joe’s dad descent after losing Joe’s mom. Then the story of Joe taking care of himself on his own land, then working on the Gorge dam. Then the rigors and passion of the sport. Unbelievable and gritty stuff.

Also have the story and pedigree of George Pocock and his influence on the sport was fascinating. You had a perfect set up to tell his story as a break from Joe’s story.

Lot of meat and extraordinary scenes from history. At the end of the day, I suspect finances and wanting to appeal to the broadest audience made this just another sports movie.

  11. Hate to be a bookfag, but thought there was a huge discrepancy between the quality of the book and what was portrayed on screen. It was a solid average movie, decent casting.

The book was an epic story of Joe Rantz and his unlikely rise with others as an Olympic Gold medalist.

The biggest mistake was putting too much in and focusing (superficially) on the love story. The meat of the story was left the floor.

  12. Knights Tale (mentioned already)
Starship Troopers (also mentioned I think)
    The Replacements
    Big Trouble in Little China

Starship Troopers and Big Trouble do not belong on that list because:

    1) They have both aged well
    2) Directed by geniuses
    3) This is Surly and we mostly love those films

now if you admit you love Starship Troopers 2-4, then you’re on to something

  13. You gotta cite all the current/ex's instead of focusing on one that's running for re-election. People get caught up on the now and not the whole picture.
Regardless, I hope this is the last cloak room shit on this thread.

There’s no fighting in the war room!

  14. I don't recall ever crying, but the Denzel scene is masterful.  An extended camera shot focusing on just him, with the sound of the whip on his back, and tears flowing down his face as he's showing tremendous restraint and whatever dignity and defiance he can muster, while keeping his eyes squarely on Col. Shaw.  Denzel is one of the best.
And yeah, it's one of my favorite musical scores of all time, which added to the power of the movie, especially the battle scenes.

One thing I appreciated about Glory is that it didnt have much battle porn, that glorified war. But it showed men, black and white, heroic and scared, killing and dying. It glorified the men who were in the war.
