How do we square these sanctions with asking Ukraine not to target Russian refineries? Is our hope that they stop exporting and their economy stops or not?! this half measure bullshit where western countries dont increase production of equipment but we allow Russia’s economy to carry on and transition to war time production is probably not going to end well.

I agree.  I think the fear is that if Ukraine started blowing up all oil production then Putin would use a nuclear weapon.  But now that the war has dragged on and Putin is just waiting out our election and American public sentiment, I think we need to let Ukraine go all in.  Otherwise what was the point.

Alex Jones used to talk about this all the time back when I was at UT over a decade ago.

I miss when Charlie Hodge would make fun of Alex Jones.

A guy in my neighborhood owns a garage that specializes in Swedish cars. This was in his driveway today.

I also find it annoying esp the onslaught of advertisements. Apparently -- in states where it's legal or legal-adjacent the gambling companies are using the popularity of sports betting as a hook to other, more profitable, games such as urging those with the apps to play a couple quick hands of blackjack or rolls of the dice.

A lot of people say this is the longterm play.  A casino on your phone.  At some point they have to in order to keep growing.

“The truth is, measles is not a super severe serious illness when you’re a child,” Mary Holland, president of the country’s best-funded anti-vaccine organization, Children’s Health Defense, said last week on the group’s online morning show. Children’s Health Defense was founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who took a leave from the organization in April to run for president.

Holland, a lawyer, called government responses to recent outbreaks “fearmongering” and “crying wolf.”

“It’s a couple days of spots and then you move on,” she said.

Mother and wellness influencers with tens of thousands of followers on Instagram have reacted to the recent outbreaks with posts warning their audience not to buy into the hype. “As the news tries to fear-monger about the measles ‘outbreak,’” one home birth advocate posted, “remember that the vaccine is more dangerous than the actual illness.” (This is false.)

Other mom influencers posted memes tapping into nostalgia for a time when some parents intentionally exposed their young children to measles, mumps and rubella with “parties,” as the diseases were considered serious, but less harmful for young children. These planned contaminations largely ended with the availability of vaccines, which offered the preferable opportunity to avoid the diseases in childhood and beyond.

I mean I always go back to a conversation I had with an ID attending in residency. We were talking about how I was the last generation or so to have “chicken pox” parties as there was no vaccine and so everyone took their turn getting it.

He had plenty of examples of kids over the years with rare neurologic complications that are lifelong. While yes the total number in a population or large city I was in is small, it does highlight the morbidity (that is lifelong) you risk with that practice. A practice that was normal and even encouraged. I think the anti vax crowd doesn’t get that. Again as with COVID I just wish people could see the pain this causes and be more empathetic or open minded or smart.

  7. So I guess the caves connect to research center and it culminates in them finding the final scientist back at the research center and/or monster of underworld?  I'm guessing final scene is sun coming back up?

Thus the end of night country and whatever is killing people (ie. UV light kills it).

  8. I went in 2020.  Museum in the stadium is cool before tip off so get there when gates open.  The players have to walk across the bottom concourse to get from locker room to court so you can get close up to the players.  We stayed in Kansas City and it's an easy drive.  Main drag of Lawrence has some cool bars. People were chill since they expect to win.
