Some perspective from a BYU fan on this game and our team’s strange 5-2 start.

Someone recently said that BYU’s offense makes the difficult look easy and the easy look difficult. We have explosive plays, we’ve utilized successfully trick plays, and can take momentum quickly. However, we go 3 and out ALL THE TIME. Our RBs can’t consistently get 4+ yards, our short passing game leaves lots to be desired, and we’re constantly in 3rd and long situations. We right now average 100 less YPG than our opponents.

So how the hell do we win games? Turnovers, and net field position. Our defense is opportunistic. Our corners are ball hawks, we’ve had success forcing fumbles, and our special teams is a huge advantage - mainly our punter. We don’t do any 1 thing particularly well. Run defense struggles at times, pass defense can too - see our game against Hoover and TCU. Thankfully, we’ve tightened up some in the red zone compared to last year.

I don’t think we stand a chance outside of you guys playing an ugly game with us. We need to force turnovers, we need a punting duel that favors ours, we need you to not explode offensively while our offense finds its footing after 2+ consecutive 3 and outs. Can it happen? Sure. But I don’t think it’s likely unless Murphy is telegramming his throws to our defense. My heart says BYU 24-20, but my head says Texas 31-14.

On a seperate note, I fly in today and want some food recommendations. Ideally some good Mexican and good BBQ would be appreciated!

Haven't seen Valentina's mentioned yet. Tex-Mex BBQ. haven't been to the new location in Buda yet (~30 min drive from austin), but i always try to get to them when I'm in town

He also dances too much at the line. He needs to make a cut and get up field. I believe that’s just part of the learning process for a true freshman at this level.

This has been what I've noticed most about him too. A few plays (at least in the Kansas game) where he got very dance-y instead of hitting holes or at least moving forward, leading to minimal gains. I think it was him that got knocked from behind on one of those plays.

That's not to say I don't think he'll be a solid to great RB down the line, or that he won't be able to handle lead back duty if Brooks does head to the draft. Just the biggest thing my very untrained eye sees as something to improve.

Kansas has a very good and experienced offensive line. I didn’t expect our D-line to dominate like they had in previous games. I continue to question our strategy of playing guys like Crawford early in the game but the long game is having a fresh defense late in the game which totally dominated Kansas. I hope we see Williams play those early safety snaps the later we get into the season and Crawford can play the cleanup role.

Auburn suddenly developing the yips is concerning but we do have other options there.

Who are the other options, and can they hit a FG longer than 40 yards? At this point I wouldnt trust bert with any must-have FGs outside of that

Nah he needs to rest. Keep it loose and comfortable.  We can win without him. I hope he doesn’t make it worse

Yea, that's my thinking too. haven't seen him on the first couple plays of this drive. helm should be more than good enough to handle this game

  5. Hey y'all - Two tickets available for the Rice game (and most of the others except for K State and BYU, as of now). Looking to get $75 per

Great seats, underneath the overhang of the upper level, so you won't bake in the sun or be rained on (lol).

Shoot me a note, and let me know if you're interested in rice or any others. Happy to discuss some bulk prices if you want to take other games off my hands.
