the Texas government of the 1850s/1860s was hell-bent on preserving slavery "in all future time":

Indeed. But there is much more. And it will never be taught in Texas schools.

After the Alamo and founding of Texas and even after the Civil War, the State of Texas -- populated with all those Christian settlers from Europe seeking "religious freedom" -- enforced a massive ethnic cleaning program (some would say genocide) to annihilate the Native Americans and seize the remaining lands in West Texas. How did UT get the massive lands in the Permian Basin, after all?

    From the Amazon blurb:

"Portraying 19th-century Texas as a cauldron of racist violence, Gary Clayton Anderson shows that the ethnic warfare dominating the Texas frontier can best be described as ethnic cleansing....

Piercing the very heart of Lone Star mythology, Anderson tells how the Texas government encouraged the Texas Rangers to annihilate Indian villages, including women and children. This policy of terror succeeded: by the 1870s, Indians had been driven from central and western Texas."

The real history is far different than the Christian version or John Wayne's Alamo Hollywood propaganda.

  2. For decades, the obvious goal has been crystal clear, at least since W was running things.

-- To completely undermine the public secular schools to empower Christian-Evangelical-Fundamentalist domination, with all their idiot world creationist anti-science, bogus BS history, faith-based fact-free worldviews.

-- What's eventually left of the public schools will be little more than educational work camps with massively overworked, underpaid teachers, trying to educate poor frustrated students ... with hallways and playground patrolled by armed guards.

-- Meanwhile, the Christian schools will be rolling in $$$, with Bible "education" for the future frat boy fascists to run the state, while the sorority girls raise the kiddos just like Joel Osteen and all the preachers say it should be ... with the poor kids working as wage slaves at the Starbucks drive through serving the sorority moms in their monster SUVs.

I'll say it again: Christianity gets a free pass in America, no matter how much the insanity and hypocrisy. And that unlimited free pass will be the death of democracy, sanity, and secularism in Texas and this country.

Those who voted for W enabled all this stupidity.

it's time for you to support your husband by being a housewife.

And the 1970s film The Stepford Wives saw it coming decades ago: the subservient sexy robot wife … created for wimp-ass men threatened by emerging female equality. Only now the wife is modified with 21st century cosmetic surgery and brainwashed at the megachurch.

That’s the evangelical MAGA-man dream goal. 21st Century Stepford Wives. Looks like Clark’s billions bought his model, a former Miss Kansas. Perfect couple for Highland Park.

Chiefs Kicker comes out as Christian Nationalist

How about we add to that:

Christian Fascist Theocrat … who is 100% itching to violently repress women and LGBTQIA … reject vaccines and general science … and herd millions of immigrants and brown people on trains to the border.

Fuck that guy and his pseudo-macho beard.

And guess what, you gotta know he ain’t the only one in the NFL or Chiefs organization with similar beliefs … or he would not be so open.

  5. History shows no surprise Maggie Haberman was/is spewing Trump propaganda for the New York Times

After all, the Nazis/Hitler had writers, artists, hacks, and propagandists all over the German newspaper, radio, and film industries in the 1930s-1940s.

    Back to the NYT bullshit:

Of course, the New York Times is full of bullshit. #bothsides.

Has been for at least 35 years … at least since I first read the Times on a regular basis in the Perry-Casteneda Library newspaper room. (Anyone else recall that room lined with newspapers, ground floor, on the right just past the security desk.)

The Times has enabled damn near every fucking major political problem in this country with their “bothsides” editorial policy and supposedly “objective" reporting. They have enabled fascism and theocracy for certain. Yet, almost every liberal I know reads it like a sacred text.

“All the News That Fits” …. that’s what should be on the front page.

Owning great is not necessarily a signal of enlightenment. So did a lot of Nazis. They stole art and pillaged museums all across Europe. And, yes, some Nazis even liked some of the more modernist stuff.

Check out the great documentary The Rape of Europa or the fantastic film, The Train (directed by John Frankenheimer). Both are powerful treatments about art stolen by the Nazis.

Harlan Crow is the furthest thing from a Nazi.

I submit that if Harlan Crow has supported or voted for Trump, he is a f*cking fascist …. or 100% fascist enabler, like the German industrialists who stood by and profited as the Nazis seized power in 1930s Germany.

F*ck Trammel Crow and all those rich GQP assholes in Highland Park. They know what they are supporting: fascism and theocracy.

History is clear on all this BS.

fuck the SEC, I’m pissed we are affiliating with those dipshits.

I’m with you Troph! I’ve been 100% against it since Day 1.

It was so obviously an Abbott-MAGA-BOR move to align UT with the fascist South, to get the confederacy back together as much as possible. “Big Boy” football was the smokescreen.

And here we are in MAGA America, going backward into the future—the 19th Century overtaking the 21st Century.

No doubt, a true statement. I’m sure most are all over the football board with the blind SEC love on display there 24/7. Probably McCombs grads and frat boy fascists.

  12. Regarding Longhornlove and 50-60% of America:

Just as Christian fascism is overrunning science, conspiracy theory and social media are overrunning sanity and secular education.

Resulting in millions upon millions of fact-twisting, fallacy-ridden, fake “experts.” The cult of the idiot and amateur, 150 million strong.

It remains to be seen whether America (or the world) survives this toxic mix.

  13. Well, the hipster UT prof that authored that CNN editorial sure knows where his bread is buttered. Just another middle-of-the-road professor.

Citing W as some kind of intellectual role model is laughable, not to mention lauding Civitas (et al). His editorial seems reasonable and well-intentioned, until you read deeper and realize it is grounded in philosophical appeasement.

The "Mack Brown Distinguished Chair” out front was the warning…

    Scares ya to death!

Abbott getting what he wanted …

    Damn straight.

And within the police/military/national guard, you can bet there are tons of Oakley-wearing goateed goons licking their chops at a chance to bash the heads of liberal UT students.

Nothing more symbolic than MAGA goons cracking skulls on the campus of the state’s flagship university.

when people think conservatism veered away from small government, state's rights, individual freedoms,

The Republican "small government-state’s rights” has always been a patriotic propaganda smoke screen to keep White Christians/Capitalists in power … and to resist progress … to resist equal rights … to resist protecting the environment ... to resist the very existence of modernity and the 20th and 21st centuries.

They’ve veered at least since Eisenhower’s military-industrial complex >>> more with Nixon-Kissinger war crimes (etc)  >>> a bit more with Reagan regime >>> then the Bushes, ramping up with W’s neofascist Patriot Act/Homeland Security and theocratic faith-based initiatives >>> full on fascist theocracy with MAGA Trump.

And we see this smokescreen and Republican fascism playing out on UT campus right now.

We should curtail child births, but the DNA won't allow it.

Well, some people have limited child births in their own lives. I know middle-aged couples and people who have no children by choice. I have no children. I made the decision long ago that getting married and raising a family was not in my skill set. No way! And it has not limited my social life at all, as I discovered there are many attractive/educated/intelligent women who are cool with the no marriage/kids scenario. I have always been right up front about it.

Plus, having no kids has massive ecological benefits long-term, adding zero consumers on the planet.

I have made a lot of dumb decisions in my life. But not this one.

    Best decision I ever made.

Except for attending UT, that is.

And, yes, they are brainwashed… so maybe they are not that “super smart" after all.

  18. Friends, I slept so well last night.

As with many of you, this photo from Wednesday bothered me immensely. As did the events at UT. Not anymore!

    Why?

Last night, I read the words of a very wise Surly poster. This poster reads history books for a hobby, minored in Anthropology, sailed the seas with the Navy ... and he has assured us all that Wednesday's police parade on the UT campus is no big deal. Just Hartzell making sure UT does not become Columbia in NYC.

In fact, this dude's knowledge of history is so deep and vast that he knows there are no definitions of fascism that fit what has been emerging in the US for at least 20 years ... accelerating the past 8 years... and bursting on to the UT campus. There are no historical descriptions anywhere of fascism that mirror GQP-MAGA, Trumpers, or Abbott and cronies.

No need to look up "fascism" in Merriam-Webster or Oxford Dictionary or Encyclopedia Brittanica or Wikipedia.

Nope, nothing to worry about.  We can all sleep easy. America is in good hands.

Nothing is changing in our world.

If this group had been protesting on an issue the Governor agreed with.....there wouldn't have been a single DPS trooper on the ground.

Seeing fascist stormtroopers marauding through leftist-liberal UT is a GQP, MAGA, and Aggy wet dream ... full-on come to life.

And we have a President who willfully supported and enabled this. Wow, just wow.

The more I think about it, the more I realize Hartzell has gotta go. And take a risk with the next person.

Time's up for appeasement ... across the board.

  20. Lots of good, thoughtful takes here about Hartzell's role. Hartzell has a tough job, but he fucked up big time and it is clear he is full-on MAGA, MAGA-adjacent, or a lackey holding on to his job.

What happened at UT is clearly fascism in action, with an entire generation living in normalized fascism, a malignancy spreading throughout culture.

Sydney Carton wisely mentioned the "Milgram Studies" and is correct: Almost nothing has been learned from the famed studies. Give people the monopoly power of violence over other people, and they will deploy that violence, ruthlessly. Social media only amplifies the Milgram insights and desire for violence.

As we saw on the UT Campus: the police, DPS, law enforcement, and military are likely filled with Milgram-MAGA fascists -- ready, able, and more than willing to impose the GQP-MAGA regime.
