Not 2024 related but Dee Kennedy, Hudson Hamilton, Easton Tumis and Nik Sanders are all headed to play in Santa Barbara this summer. That summer team/league has been good to us in the past for helping develop young guys. Dylan Campbell, Max Belyeu, Jalin Flores and Rylan Galvan all played on that team in recent years.

How do you (or does one) find out where all of the different players will be in the summer?  I don't recall that kind of information being published anywhere.  I usually have to hunt with the google machine under each players name I am interested in and that takes a while.

  2. 1.  Does Tanner Witt have any eligibility remaining?  His draft prospects seem pretty bleak right now.  He has played in 4 seasons but I don't know if he got a medical reprieve from last year or got any of the COVID extra eligibility.

    2.  Any information or updates on the new commit, Kyrin LeBlanc?  The fastball sounds great, but he does not seem to have much control yet and is definitely a project. In those 19.1 innings this year (15 appearances) he gave up 15 hits and 19 walks, as well as 10 hit batters and 2 wild pitches. He only pitched 2.2 innings for Cisco Junior College last year. It would be nice to get some pitchers that already throw strikes and throw hard. He is old for the class and may have had grade issues because it appears that he was offered by Xavier of Louisiana while in high school, but somehow wound up at Cisco.

Levi Sterling is the other guy I’m thinking of. SS/RHP out of California but he is probably going to get drafted (maybe as a pitcher, is up to 94-95). I’m not holding my breath on Rainer either. Not sure about Luna but his profile doesn’t strike me as someone who would get drafted super high.

Interesting thoughts on Gillen. I know he has looked much better so far this year after being hampered by injuries. He was really, really good his sophomore year.

I saw another high school prospect ranking recently that also had Gillen pretty high and said that if he did well this season he could possibly move up to a first day draft choice.  Rainer was way up there and Luna was in there too.

  4. I watched Friday on tv.  I was there yesterday and it was not what I had hoped for.  Several players haven't begun to hit yet.  Hurley was not great yesterday, but was serviceable.  Four walks in 3.2 innings is not good.  Most of the relievers looked okay, with a few shaky moments.  It was good to see Luke Harrision back.  Play was okay except for a couple of instances.  The steal of home by SD was a cluster f.  SD had several stolen bases (6 of 7).  I may be wrong, think that the catchers have thrown one runner in a stolen base attempt.   Last year I think Galvan threw out one in over 20 attempts.  Schuessler threw out 0 in 9 attempts the year before he was hurt.  That really needs to pick up.  Jared and Payton have looked really good.  Jack and Porter are off to a slow start.  Max looks like he is more comfortable at the plate this year, but doesn't have a hit yet.  The 2 homeruns have produced the majority of the runs so far.

Powell can play short? Not sure I want to see that

Hopefully this is not a duplicate-my internet glitched when I tried to post the first time.

Powell would not be my first choice either if they shuffle players around.  O'Dowd was an allstate caliber shortstop in high school.  This if from his bio-  "Attended Lipscomb Academy (Nashville, Tenn.)…nation’s 21st-ranked shortstop by Perfect Game…Tennessee’s top-ranked shortstop and fourth-rated overall prospect…"

Powell is a good utility player and could probably play SS in a pinch, as could O'Dowd.

Blake added that Luke Harrison is full go to start the season so that's huge. I thought he would still be at least a few weeks behind.

It was only a couple of weeks ago or so that Coach Pierce said that Luke had just thrown his first pitch to a live batter.  So he might be ready to pitch, but he also might have to ease into it as far as innings are concerned.

So apparently it is not a lock that Witt will open the year as a starter. Seem to be toying around with the idea of potentially using him out of the bullpen.

I did think it was interesting that he didn't throw/start in the alumni game in what you would think is his typical throwing day (Saturday) if he was a starter.

Did you hear that about Witt somewhere?  It might not be a bad idea to use him some in the bullpen to see how his innings go, but in the last interview Pierce did say he was hitting 93 some.  Not far from where he was as a freshman, but he is also a pretty good control pitcher when he is on.  LBJ didn't pitch in the alumni game either and we only use a total of 7 pitchers in the game and Shaw pitched an inning for both sides.

We need to be below 3.00 or shut the program down.

The last two seasons we were over 4.00.  It has been a couple of years since we had a team ERA of under 3, but we did have it in '20 and '21.

Texas Sports Unfiltered. It is a continuous livestream, so you might have to back up the video quite a bit. It was with Brad Kellner & Bucky Godbolt at around 9:30 this morning.

    Thanks.

Pierce was just on another one of those YouTube shows previewing the season

-Said the pitch Witt added was a slider. Again mentioned his velo being a tick down, with him typically sitting 90-92. He was up to 94 as a freshman.

-Also talked about the new fan area in LF, 'Yeti Yard'. I wondered what they were doing with that space where they had opened the fencing for viewing. Sounds like there will be concessions and a bar out there. He said in general they are looking to expand capacity as we head to the SEC

-When going around the diamond previewing the position players, he had Gasparino and Farmer grouped in with the starting 9. Still sounds like catcher is up in the air.

What YouTube video was it?  Do you have a link?

  11. I am not a Corso fan and hope he doesn't come back.  Pat M. doesn't add much for me, he is just another loud blowhard.  I am interested to see what Saban is like.

I grew up in the sticks in east TX and never head that phrase until I was an adult.

I grew up in Houston and my parents and grandparents were from east TX and I never heard that phrase either.

D1 ball is just a different animal compared to many JUCO levels. I still think there is an unknown factor with Cummings at this level compared to Werchan who has 350+ career AB's even if it was the Ivy League. And as I said, I don't think either him or Werchan is a CF for a team like Texas so that puts them behind the eight ball because both our corner OF spots are pretty much locked in.

Werchan is also a big culture guy. Walk-on who flies around with reckless abandon. Just does a lot of the little things.

Gotcha about D1 and JUCO.  Here's hoping our JUCO guys can bring some of the Ivan Melendez JUCO mojo with them.

  14. That is tough luck about Storm.

Regarding the comment above about Cummings being behind Werchan in the pecking order, I thought Cummings had a lot of hype coming in.  I don't think Werchan's stats were particularly good even for the Ivy League.  If Cummings really is behind Werchan, that is pretty far down in the pecking order for playing time.  Having two freshman in the outfield (Gasparino and Farmer) might not help for a good start to the season.  Time will tell.

Hurt in the fall and medically retired.

Thanks.  That is tough luck for Rigney.  I remember looking him up when he committed.  As I recall, he was hurt in high school and at Baylor.

So apparently Santos is out for the season with an injury. He is on the roster though.

So Storm is the only portal guy we will get contributions from this year if you don't include the two JUCO pitchers. Brutal luck with Mercer, Rigney and Santos.

What happened to Rigney?  I don't think I saw any news on him.

  17. Good news about Luke Harrison.  I always thought he had a big upside and it would be good to get him back even better than before.  Not so good news about Witt's speed on his fastball.  I watched some of the Cape Cod League games online and for the most part he did not look any different than when he came back last season.  He needs a bit more speed and to fully regain his control.

  18. The UT Baseball Twitter page posted the new signees from the 2024 high school class.   However, the pitcher from Dripping Springs appears to have been on the Aggies roster for 2023 but didn’t play.  Seems like a transfer portal signee to me.

  19. RIP.  I was a big fan of his, and am still a Cowboys fan.  Once while I was in college at SHSU he pulled up in front of the Student Center while I was walking out.  He was there representing smokeless tobacco that weekend for some SHSU rodeo event.  Of course he had on wranglers, boots, big rodeo buckle, cowboy hat, etc.  He was a very stout guy.
