D1 ball is just a different animal compared to many JUCO levels. I still think there is an unknown factor with Cummings at this level compared to Werchan who has 350+ career AB's even if it was the Ivy League. And as I said, I don't think either him or Werchan is a CF for a team like Texas so that puts them behind the eight ball because both our corner OF spots are pretty much locked in.

Werchan is also a big culture guy. Walk-on who flies around with reckless abandon. Just does a lot of the little things.

Gotcha about D1 and JUCO.  Here's hoping our JUCO guys can bring some of the Ivan Melendez JUCO mojo with them.

  2. That is tough luck about Storm.

Regarding the comment above about Cummings being behind Werchan in the pecking order, I thought Cummings had a lot of hype coming in.  I don't think Werchan's stats were particularly good even for the Ivy League.  If Cummings really is behind Werchan, that is pretty far down in the pecking order for playing time.  Having two freshman in the outfield (Gasparino and Farmer) might not help for a good start to the season.  Time will tell.

Hurt in the fall and medically retired.

Thanks.  That is tough luck for Rigney.  I remember looking him up when he committed.  As I recall, he was hurt in high school and at Baylor.

So apparently Santos is out for the season with an injury. He is on the roster though.

So Storm is the only portal guy we will get contributions from this year if you don't include the two JUCO pitchers. Brutal luck with Mercer, Rigney and Santos.

What happened to Rigney?  I don't think I saw any news on him.

  5. Good news about Luke Harrison.  I always thought he had a big upside and it would be good to get him back even better than before.  Not so good news about Witt's speed on his fastball.  I watched some of the Cape Cod League games online and for the most part he did not look any different than when he came back last season.  He needs a bit more speed and to fully regain his control.

  6. The UT Baseball Twitter page posted the new signees from the 2024 high school class.   However, the pitcher from Dripping Springs appears to have been on the Aggies roster for 2023 but didn’t play.  Seems like a transfer portal signee to me.

  7. RIP.  I was a big fan of his, and am still a Cowboys fan.  Once while I was in college at SHSU he pulled up in front of the Student Center while I was walking out.  He was there representing smokeless tobacco that weekend for some SHSU rodeo event.  Of course he had on wranglers, boots, big rodeo buckle, cowboy hat, etc.  He was a very stout guy.

Good for him. The MLB signing tracker at five minutes ago showed he was unsigned.  When I saw this I checked again and it indeed said he was signed.  Glad he got more money, but sorry to see him go.  Good luck in the pros.

I never even look at batting average, and scouts do so less and less, I would think. There are ten (10) guys in the entire MLB with a BA over .300. Ten.  It's not a great way to judge guys these days.

Things have sure changed.  I checked and there are at least 34 guys who have struck out 100 or more times already.

I am not sure what is up with the Dodgers, but according to their full draft/signing tracker they haven't signed a single player.  I just checked and the Astros have signed some players, but Garret is not one of them.  Lucas has agreed to terms with the White Sox, but has not signed the deal yet according to the White Sox's draft/signing tracker.

Don’t think he signed his LOI back in the fall. They were going to wait and see what the numbers looked like.

Interesting.  I did a quick search and couldn't find his recent stats but he did post that he was the team's MVP this year and he made first team all district, or their equivalent.

Alright, now that offseason movement has pretty much wrapped up for the most part we can probably start looking big picture. Here is where we are sitting roster wise:

Catcher (5)- Galvan, Schuessler (returning from injury), Sanders (could end up in OF), Service, Fahrlander (walk on)

Corner infield (7)- Thomas, Powell (both spots), Sweeney (1B only), Storm (1B and OF), Czech (3B), Borba (both spots), Constantine (1B only)

Middle infield (6)- Flores, O'Dowd, Cade O'Hara, Ardoin, Lane Allen, Dondreone Kennedy (could end up in the OF)

OF (7)- Brown, Belyeu, Cummings, Gasparino, Duplantier, Peterson, Werchan

RHP (16)- Witt, Hurley, Boehm, Grubbs, Howard, Tole, LBJ, Duplantier, Rigney, Selvig, Morris, Hamilton, Tumis, Miranda, Zaharias, Zattopek

LHP (6)- Mercer, Lummus, Whitehead, Santos, Shaw (out for season), Harrison (return during season)

Not sure if they are returning/making it to campus: Walbridge, Preston Hoffart, Tommy Farmer (incoming freshman)

What is the issue with Tommy Farmer?

  13. Witt looked good in his previous start, but yesterday looks more like what he did before the start before that and most of his outings during the season.  I don't know if he needs to shut it down or keep working.

Regarding the Schwartz kid that just committed, I don't know much about him but saw a kid named Bolkema, class of 24 from Iowa, welcoming him as another prior commit.  I looked him up and he was a champion last year in some kind of national home run derby contest.  He looks like a high school defensive lineman.  He is about 5 ft. 10 and about 250.

  14. Checked the stats yesterday and Flores and Galvan are not doing well in summer ball.  Belyeu is on the same team and is doing pretty well.  Flores and Galvan have low batting averages and too many strikeouts and don't seem to be improving over what they did during the season this year.  I hope Flores and Galvan pick it up in those categories if they are expected to have significant roles at UT next year.
