Just got an email saying the clinical pathology department is wanting to borrow certain types of qPCRs from the labs/departments that have them (which includes mine) for COVID-19 testing purposes. QuantStudio 3, for those interested in that sort of thing.
Anyhow, I wonder if this is going on at all the other similar places. Never thought about it, but those things are fairly pricey (I want to say something like 50-60k) and I suppose there aren't all THAT many of them. There were only three on the list.
The ABI Fast 7500 DX is a hot commodity right now since for a while that was the only machine specified by the CDC. I heard that Thermo was going to discontinue it but now they can't keep up with production.

It is wrong that I would expect the travis county data to be better basically 3 weeks into social distancing and nearly two weeks into lockdown. We are adding cases at an alarming rate, with most of them between teh ages of 20-50.
I have some colleagues that support testing labs in Texas and they have told me last week that the back log for tests was 4-5 days, so these numbers are also probably that far behind too.

Not seeing a location, but is Nashville a hotspot?
Nashville has a 2-300 cases I think, but they still are having trouble getting tests and convincing people to stay home. It appears that he got it from his wife.

My sister is an ER nurse in the DFw area and she says its getting bad with the 18-30 year olds. Most of which reporting having traveled for spring break.
I wonder if it's possible that they're ending up in the ER because the partying and drinking weakened their immune systems.

For reference, Houston closed down the Rodeo on the 11th/12th.
The Rodeo is closed!? Damn

I'm guessing that after a few weeks of shut down we'll start seeing businesses allowed to reopen but with workers wearing masks, so having masks available will be needed.

During Cuomo's speech, CNN showed NY State with over 7500 cases? Whoa. Worldometer is only reporting 3,086 for NY and a little over 9k for the whole US.
Did this thing start exploding overnight?
We're finally starting to be able to test

The RNA isolation seems to be a holdup, but a more complete answer is:
I've heard from a lot of my coworkers in the field that RNA isolation reagent kits (Qiagen) are becoming hard to get.
There are quite a few test and extraction kits/instruments available, but it's a matter of getting them in the lab and the people trained. From what I've seen the majority of labs use a Qiagen platform, so if Qiagen is having trouble keeping up with demand everyone is screwed.
Could be time for the lab techs to kick it old school with some manual phenol chloroform extractions.

Well, you see the TSA is a union shop and under page 46 of the collective bargaining agreement no agent can be assigned an additional shift without 30 days notice and a 7 day acceptance confirmation period.
This is a CBP issue, not TSA

Why is it so packed ?
O'Hare sucks for international arrivals on a good day but now it's one of only 13 airports designated for international arrivals which include extra screening which is a recipe for a monumental shit show

New to apocalypses here so have newbie question. Why the rush to go buy water? Are people thinking shit will get so bad that tap water will be affected?
This question comes up every few pages.
General consensus is that people are accustomed to buying water for other freakouts, so it's force of habit.
Or, that water is so cheap they can't afford not to but it.

Holy fuck, did anyone else just hear Trump talk about this? We're so so so fucked.
Just watched his press conference. Didn't think my opinion of him could get any lower, but I was wrong. Especially liked how our new tests are "perfect, just like the letter, just like the phone call, and just like the transcript, well maybe not as perfect but close".
Also not wanting to bring the people off of the cruise ship because it will make our numbers go up.
