  1. It’s funny about French lunches. A colleague and I were in a smaller French city some years ago where we were negotiating a large technical equipment sale for several days.  We generally worked through technical details in the morning, had the French 2.5 hour lunch beginning with an aperitif, a different bottle of wine with each course, ending with dessert wine.  Then we went back and worked on the commercial portions of the contract in the afternoon.  The combination of the lunch coupled with jet lag and we would agree to almost anything we were so fried.

  2. I’ve seen recommendations for Elote several times and from independent sources.  I look at their menu and don’t particularly see anything I can’t get in Houston or Austin.  And they don’t have any specific vegan options.  I get that the location is different and unique but Southwestern/Mexican is pretty well represented across Texas and New Mexico.  What am I missing?

For mixed palates, there's a Himalayan Grill in Flagstaff.  Non-descript, FANTASTIC grub.  Plenty of vegan options, and great non-vegan stuff as well.

We did GCNP in January one year, and it was great -- snow still on the ground, not hot outside.  It is going to be warm for y'all, so plan accordingly.  But yeah, there are plenty of trails, parking spots, etc. all along the S. Rim where you can see everything you want to see.  And you'll be there after peak tourist season, so that will help.

Also, if you can, staying a night in the park, at the lodge on the S. Rim, and getting a dinner reservation at El Tovar, is a cool thing to do.  Bring binoculars and such -- stargazing out there is great as well.

So far, we booked a guided sunset tour and the IMAX which are later in the day (obvs).  If it was just me, I would start with the 12 hour raft trip down the Colorado, followed by the hike up, and camp out on the ledge, but it's not.  We can't go anywhere that's more than 30 minutes from a bathroom.  So I'm working within those constraints.  My brother just came back from GCNP, and said if he had it to do over again, he would go to the bottom.

Binoculars is a great tip that I might not have considered, I'll add them to my list.  Also looking at a wide angle lens for my camera to see if I can better capture the vista.  We'll have a rental car, so will be mobile.  Himalayan Grill is a good idea.  We like Indian.

  4. I’m sure there’s a GCNP thread somewhere but the search is borked up and I didn’t find it in the first seven pages.

Wife and I are heading to Flagstaff in late September as a jumping off point to the Grand Canyon as well as Sedona and other stuff. My wife is not particularly a hiker nor a rafter nor an aviator. So what’s the best way to fully experience and see the Grand Canyon given those limitations?  Any food recs in the area particularly Sedona (especially vegan)?  We have an AirBnB in Flagstaff for four nights so can do some home cooking as well.  Bring me your Surly knowledge.

  5. I think they released the video and noted that the detective didn’t follow procedure so that they have a plausible excuse to walk away from the charges.  Should be done quickly.  No way Scottie has to show up for an arraignment hearing.
