  1. Been working my way through Bret Easton Ellis' oeuvre. His latest, The Shards, is definitely one his best, imo. Might even be his best overall, though I still think The Rules of Attraction is better. I'm kind of perplexed as to why he's so often regarded as a hack, provocateur, etc. Whatever, you know? This country clearly doesn't appreciate greatness, or even distinct perspectives, as much as it used to; and I don't say this as an older person reminiscing on the past, either. Also, I heavily recommend Peter Watson's The French Mind: 400 Years of Romance, Revolution, and Revolt. It's nominally nonfiction, but reads much more like a great novel. Almost reminds of me of Caro's works, but it's probably a bit better than those, which are ofc great.
  2. I'm still surprised that so many think Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are good movies. The former is too wordy for its own good -- Nolan cannot write -- and the latter failed to be immersive; it's the work of an old director and an even older editor, unfortunately. Wouldn't call either one of them bad though. Nor even mediocre; they're both solid. I agree that Barbie was a good, quality, fun/light movie, though. This one was okay imo. Lanthimos is hit or miss -- not sure which one this is atm, maybe just somewhere in between. Not that anyone's asking, but I think May December is the best of the year (worldwide even, though it takes so long to judge that because of the sheer amount of productions now readily available to us). John Wick 4 is up there too.
  3. Bret Easton Ellis' podcast is typically pretty good. Interviews people all throughout the entertainment/arts world, typically. Definitely not something to listen to if you want to feel warm and fuzzy about the current state of Hollywood/movies altogether though.
