LA is likely gonna be a line… this time of year I don’t expect it to be crazy, maybe 30 mins, but bet others could give more accurate numbers
It's consistently been an hour plus during the week over the past several months.

Spent a week in Seoul last year. It was amazing. Between the temples, markets, parks, nightlife, shopping, restaurants, and bars, it flew by. We're talking about returning next year to visit Busan and Jeju. I'm guessing late September means you'll be too late to catch a baseball game, which is too bad... the games are wild.

For anyone interested in contemporary art, the Seattle Art Museum is currently featuring the largest exhibit of Ai Weiwei to be held in the States. It's running through Sep 7th. I plan to get up in August at some point.

Moreno is awesome and absolutely should have been on the list.
I was in Lockhart this morning and after ruling out Black's--recently hit the Guadalupe location--and Terry Black's--taking the FIL this weekend--decided to hit Kreuz for the first time in 10-15 years. Goddamn, Central Texas barbecue has gotten so good in the past ten years, and Kreuz is the worse for it. The meal was above average for Kreuz, but it was not good. I used to buy whole briskets from Kreuz, Smitty's, and Black's and fly them back to NY so I could host brisket parties back when I lived there. Those briskets would blow minds, but they really can't compete with the newer wave.

Staying in upper west side (79th street) and looking for some nice places to eat nearby (not Michelin or 5 star but just some quality older places that are nyc establishments).
Also need a rec for a great jazz club (traditional old school type place, not hip and trendy).Check out Village Vanguard. Other old-school options: Blue Note, Small's, Birdland.
UWS is a bit of a culinary wasteland. But if you're staying on W 79th, you should make the trek to Barney Greengrass for breakfast or lunch. Very worthwhile NY institution.

Went to Intero for our anniversary a couple weeks ago. It was really good, but great. Both of our mains seemed too rich. We like its sister restaurant Poeta better.
Looks like Poeta closed already. Bummer.

Jungsik, Per Se, Masa, Atomix, Le Bernardin, and EMP in one trip is really something.
Atomix is the best of the bunch IMO.
Agreed. Was surprised Atomix didn't get their third star, esp considering Jungsik did.

Not sure if still a good recommendation but I remember some nice reasonable food options underneath Taipei 101.
There's also a Din Tai Fung in Taipei 101, on one of the lower levels. A friend took us to A Joy, which is on the 86th floor. An over-the-top buffet with awesome views. I'm not a buffet guy but it was pretty cool.

I've been over twice in the past year, primarily in Tainan, with a handful of days in Taipei and Kaohsiung thrown in. Can't recommend Tainan enough, esp if you like exploring a city on foot. Let me know if you're looking for anything specific. Also, check out al.dente.life on IG. He does a great job chatting up chefs and industry people on their favorite spots... primarily in Taipei but plenty of recs around the island.

Bumping this because I didn't get an answer about getting an e-visa vs just going through regular customs at the airport. Also, any suggestions on metro tickets. I see there's a 72 hour pass, but it looks like it doesn't work on all lines. What the easiest way to pay for the metro?
I was in Japan a couple weeks ago. Easiest way to pay for metro is to download the Suica app. You can add funds from your phone as necessary and don't need to bother with a card. We did not use the e-visa and blasted through customs, but it's kind of luck of the draw.

Wife and I have a 48 hour layover in CDMX in September on the way to Barcelona. Looking at hotels in Roma and Condesa. I saw the rec for La Valise. Any others that we should check out?
Also looking for good places to eat. We'll do the street food thing but want to do one nice dinner. Has Pujol dropped off in quality? From the reviews we've seen, it sounds like it might have. Where else to go for that meal? Quintonil? Somewhere else?
La Valise is great, but you could also take a look at Brick and Casa Izeba, both in the same area.
I haven't been to Pujol or Quintonil in a few years, but my favorite spot for awhile has been Maximo. Planning to return next month.

Has anyone heard of the Francois Audouze wine dinners? He hosts a number of dinners throughout the year (12 in 2024) and opens up his 40,000 bottle cellar. They are usually in Paris and are not cheap (~$2,300 - $6,800), but would be a bucket list experience for me. Here is a sample of some of the wines he's served.
http://www.wine-dinners.com/en/ (this website could use an upgrade)
Some of the wines in recent and upcoming dinners:
Oct 2024
· Romanee Conti Estate of Romanee Conti 1955
· Romanée Conti Estate of Romanée Conti 1945
· Romanee Conti Estate of Romanee Conti 1929
Dec 2024
· Champagne Taittinger Counts of Champagne 1959
· Champagne Salon Le Mesnil 1988
· Chateau Laville Haut-Brion 1969
· Montrachet Morin Father & Son 1990
· Chateau Grand La Lagune 1934
· Great Wine of Léoville from the Marquis de Las Cases 1918
· Echézeaux Domaine Dujac 1976
· Great Echézeaux Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1976
· Chateau Climens Barsac 1966
· Chateau de Fargues Sauternes 1985
Feb 2025
· Champagne Mumm Cuvée René Lalou magnum 1982
· Champagne Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises 1999
· Riesling Clos Sainte Hune Trimbach 1975
· Château Haut-Brion blanc 1953
· Château Brane-Cantenac 1928
· Château Nénin Pomerol 1961
· Santenay Gravières Jessiaume Père et Fils 1928
· Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1959
· Château Chalon Jean Bourdy 1942
· Château Gilette Crème de Tête Sauternes 1961
March 2025
· Champagne Jacques Selosse Substance dégorgé 07/2013
· Champagne Salon 1997
· Bâtard Montrachet Domaine Leflaive 1990
· Chante Alouette Hermitage blanc M. Chapoutier 1952
· Château Cheval Blanc 1960
· Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe 1955
· Chambertin Clos de Bèze Armand Rousseau 1998
· Vega Sicilia Unico 1941
· Château Chalon Jean Bourdy 1947
· Château d'Yquem 1962
The knock on Audouze has long been that while you might strike gold, plenty of his older bottles are just not in great shape, which isn't surprising considering their age. But it becomes a problem when he refuses to acknowledge bad bottles and you're paying thousands of dollars to drink them. That said, I'd be tempted, depending on the lineup.

We were discussing that this morning and then taking a train from Santiago de Compostela to Bilbao. But we decided to change the itinerary because any of the flights back home I could snag required 2 stops and an overnight layover in either Madrid or London. I probably lucked out and found a nonstop from Porto to BCN, and a one-stop with a short layover from BCN back to Denver. So now we're going from Paris to Porto to BCN, and we'll do a day trip from Porto into Galicia. Neither of us have been to Barcelona either and it didn't cost any more miles so I'm counting this as a win, although I'm disappointed that we won't get into Basque.
Basque country is great, but Galicia is underrated, especially if you like seafood. One of the great seafood destinations.

Drop off fees to take a rental car from Portugal to Spain one way are ridiculous right now.
This is almost always the case. I took a bus from Porto to Vigo and picked up a car there to explore Galicia and Santiago de Compostela.

Stayed at the Hotel Nacional in Havana for a few nights a decade ago. The room was kinda sketch, but the common areas and views were as gorgeous as they're portrayed on TV. I had to head to the lobby anytime I needed to relieve myself. They just couldn't get the toilet in the room to work.

I have a solo dinner night in New Orleans in late October. Looking for recs for upscale/upscale-ish place (preferably with dinner service at a bar/counter seating, tho not a must). Thinking something like Shaya or R'evolution, but those are pretty established now so wondering if Surly has any other recs.
Went to Shaya last week... feels like it's fallen off a bit. I'd recommend MaMou, which was the best meal of the trip. You need a reso, but you can make one for the bar. Great food/service/vibe.

Paris is great in January... less crowded, relatively easy to make resos, cozy and romantic, and usually not too cold for exploring. If you're into food, it's a good time of the year as well... post-game season, but you can still find winter specialties like lievre a la royale or whole truffle in puff pastry. If you're worried about the weather, we spent a week in southern Spain at the beginning of February this year, and it was glorious.

It looks like SWA charges $125 per dog, per trip. Anybody have some experience with this?
We fly with our dog on both SWA and Alaska fairly frequently. My wife handles it, but it's fairly straightforward, the only downside being you have to pay at the ticket counter before your flight, so you can't go straight to the gate.
