  1. True, and with it gone, the work has become more dangerous

  2. Autopilot is looking more and more like a bad idea. Or at least an ok idea that the public overestimates the capabilities of.

There's 6 levels of autonomy in vehicles.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_car#Levels_of_driving_automation

Level 0 and 1 are where most cars are now. Tesla is at 2 trying to get to 3. Levels 4 and 5 are the goal and what companies like Google are working on. The problem is that levels 2 and 3 are probably the most dangerous levels because the car can do some driving by itself but can't handle an emergency and so needs a human to be ready to take over. This is problematic for a variety of reasons. Human attention naturally wonders when you have nothing to do or are doing something boring like just watching a car drive. They will also tend to overestimate the capabilities and think a level 2 is really closer to a level 4, like the guy who was killed because he let autopilot drive while he was watching Harry Potter on a portable dvd player.

Looks like we have the first victim of the bipartisan FOSTA law.

Breaking: Feds Seize Control of Backpage.com

Site had long been a target for sex work and sex trafficking advertisements.

    Scott Shackford|Apr. 6, 2018 4:19 pm

Backpage.com, a site that has long been fighting with federal and state governments over online sex trafficking advertisements, was seized this afternoon by the Department of Justice.

Details are not available as yet. The Department of Justice is planning a press conference at 6 p.m. Eastern. Visitors to the site are greeted with this image:

    BackpageBackpage.com

Elizabeth Nolan Brown has been warning that the newly passed so-called "Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act" (FOSTA) that turned online sex trafficking adds a federal crime would destroy some of the legal liability protections sites had over the content posted by third parties.

It's not clear yet that there's any relationship between the passage of FOSTA and Backpage's seizure. But it's hard to ignore the timing. Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, more on Backpage in Reason's archives here.

  5. It may be a bit different now that they are in win mode, vs the tank mode they were in when Springer was called up. Of course they'll also have a more valid excuse to keep him down now by saying they don't have room for him with such a great team and would rather him continue to get steady at bats in triple A. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News provided an updated Top 30 visitor list yesterday that included Notre Dame OT Mike McGlinchey, LSU DE Arden Key, Virginia Tech safety Terrell Edmunds, and Ole Miss DE Breeland Speaks as the newest additions.

At the same time, Machota took Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk and Texas OT Connor Williamsoff the list, though that doesn't mean the Cowboys are not interested in the two players

It’s also important to remember that players like SMU wide receiver Courtland Suttondon’t usually get a 30 visit because they can participate in the Cowboys’ annual Dallas Day event for local prospects, which is Friday at The Star.

There are also prospects including Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk and Texas offensive tackle Connor Williams who are not on the 30 list but confirmed at their Pro Days that they had visits or private workouts scheduled with the Cowboys.

To date, these are the players we know the Cowboys have invited for an official Top 30 visit (ranking taken from Dane Brugler's latest top 100 big board):

Unit Player Position School Proj. Round Brugler Rank

Why all the Wiggy hate?  I have a great appreciation for that dude.  Hell, the way he has supported the team for years he should get a ring today.  Or at least get to ride on one of the fire trucks in the parade this year.

Prob because there are hundreds of other fans who would deserve that as well yet they don't dress up like Flavor Flav so no one knows who they are.

Arizona Cardinals Ink Brice Butler To Two-Year Deal - Tyler Nickel, Revenge of the Birds

    Quote

Butler had his best season as a pro in 2017, hauling in 15 receptions for 317 yards and 3 touchdowns. Now in his sixth season, Butler figures to come in and compete for one of the top receiver positions, perhaps filling a hole that Jaron Brown once filled before he left this offseason.

At 6’3” and 220 pounds, Butler is another big receiver for the Cardinals to try and mold into a breakout player. Keep an eye out for the team to possibly pick up more wide receiver help in free agency and/or the NFL Draft at the end of the month.

    Pre-draft visits

Pre-draft visit list is hint to top pick - Clarence E. Hill, Jr., Fort Worth Star-Telegram

If you want to know the Dallas Cowboys’ intentions in the 2018 NFL Draft, peruse their list of pre-draft visits.

It has always been a telling sign for the Cowboys, who will host 30 pre-draft national visitors Monday through Thursday and then hold Dallas Day on Friday.

All but one of the team’s first-round picks since 2007 have been brought in for a pre-draft visit.

Here's BTBs full list of all 19 visitors known so far:

  9. What's your favorite asoiaf theory? Which do you think will be true and which are just fun to speculate about? The biggest one that is obviously accepted by almost everyone is R+L=J, but I also like the fAegon = Blackfyre theory.

The Southron Ambitions theory seems to make a lot of stuff fit, but I'm not sure it will ever be confirmed. I don't put much stock in the theories of Tyrion or Cersei and Jamie being secret Targaryens. It seems almost certain that the Hound is the gravedigger but I doubt we get it confirmed or hear from him again.

Do you think Jojen Paste will be confirmed? I didn't even pick up on that when I read but it makes some sense afterwards.

What do you think happened at Summerhall?

  10. Two Jaylon Smith-type prospects who will fall in NFL draft that Cowboys could eye in later rounds - Dane Brugler, SportsDay

After having the Cowboys take Vander-Esch in round one, Brugler gives two more linebackers to watch.

Question: [Are] there any Jaylon Smith-type guys who are going to fall because of injury that Dallas might have an eye on in later rounds?

Brugler: Wisconsin LB Jack Cichy is the first to come to mind. Early round talent, but he can’t stay on the field. And West Georgia offensive tackle Dez Harrison is an interesting name that the Cowboys have done extra homework on. He has a laundry list of issues that will drop him in the draft, but the raw talent is special. Harrison is an interesting project in the later rounds.

Harrison in the 5th or later sounds like a good project.

  11. These videos are already kind of creepy, so the perfect venue for Aubrey Plaza.

Today, in “Maybe the weirdest thing we’ve ever had to watch for work” news: W Magazine recently recruited Parks And Recreation and Legion star Aubrey Plaza for its ongoing, aurally uncomfortable video series, “Celebrity ASMR,” which is exactly what it sounds like. But where folks like Jake Gyllenhaal, Margot Robbie, and Gal Gadot only paid loudly-smacking lip service when they sat down way too close to W’s mics—posting videos a mere two or three minutes in length—Plaza approached the task with the same intensity with which she appears to tackle pretty much everything in her life, laying down a 36-minute sonic odyssey in search of “the tingles.” Also, a lot of it was about how much she still hates Jerry.
