ORLANDO, Florida --

A man who police say shot an officer before barricading himself in a Florida apartment killed the four children he had been holding hostage before killing himself, police said Monday.

Orlando police Chief John Mina said at a press conference just before midnight that the suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr., was found dead in a closet when officers entered the apartment nearly 24 hours after the standoff began.

Mina said officers tried to offer one of their phones to Lindsey, whose phone had spotty service, and saw that one of the children had been killed. Authorities entered the apartment around 9 p.m. hoping to rescue the others but all were found dead.

The children with Lindsey ranged in age from 1 to 11, Mina said. The Orlando Sentinel reports two of them were Lindsey's children and two belonged to his girlfriend, who called police Sunday.

Officers responding to a domestic violence report were fired upon, police said. Officer Kevin Valencia was shot and was in critical condition but is expected to survive, Mina said Monday. One officer was able to return fire, the police chief said.

Valencia is in his late 20s and has been with the police department since 2016, Mina said.

Court records show Lindsey, 35, had an extensive criminal history involving arson, battery and theft. He was on probation for several charges including arson.

Judy Pepper, who lives in the apartment complex, told the Sentinel that she had fallen asleep on the couch after watching a Sunday night baseball game on television when she heard four loud gunshots.

"It just went, 'Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop,'" Pepper said.

She looked out the window and saw three people carrying a police officer onto the grass. She said other officers arrived, cut open his shirt and appeared to be putting bandages on his neck. Then, they put him in a patrol car and sped away.

"Hell, yes, I was absolutely terrified," she said.

Officers evacuated other residents of the complex in the middle of the night. Some were milling around nearby restaurant parking lots Monday morning, still wearing pajamas. They were later taken to a hotel.

The standoff also disrupted the routines of residents who lived in neighboring apartment communities. About five blocks from the apartment, two police squad cars blocked the entrance to the street. Residents of the neighboring apartment complexes had to show identification and be escorted by the police. Several firetrucks lined the road.

My husband and I were talking last night, about how everyone that is a real criminal seems to go by 3 names, and that many murderers have the middle name of Wayne.

Is it coincidence? Probably. Statistically speaking, it is likely expected. Is it real? Certainly. Is it weird? Definitely!

Today, I did some research into it. Who are the killers, whose middle name is Wayne? A list is available, published by News of the Weird. It does not includes some really notable serial killers, such as John Wayne Gacy, pictured at right, who managed to confirm my lifelong fear of clowns. It also includes plenty of plain murderers, who aren't, perhaps, as well known.

Take a look! There are a lot of killers with the middle name Wayne! They are listed in the order in which they were convicted... Wish there was a list of dates, with this! I have highlighted those with the combination of John Wayne _____.

So, where is John Wayne Gacy on this list? Can't find him-- so I assume he is on some other kind of list...

Anyway, do you think that having the middle name of Wayne actually turns people into murderers, or that something about families that name their sons "Wayne" promotes an environment the produces killers? I mean, too, that I know a whole slew of "Waynes" and none of them are killers...

Just a bit weird.

Please be nice to one another on this article! If any of our members have the middle name of Wayne, this is not a slam article to you!

Thanks for coming by!

Death-row inmate says cryptic last words before fight breaks out at execution

A Texas death-row inmate who was executed Thursday for killing his estranged wife's family nearly 30 years ago, uttered cryptic final words before he died.

"That'll be five dollars," Billie Wayne Coble, 70, of Waco, reportedly said. He told the five witnesses in attendance to "take care," according to reports.

Although what Coble meant by the cyptic remark was unclear, it was likely a reference to his nickname, "$5 Bill," according to the Dallas Morning News.

As Coble was finishing his statement, his son, a friend and a daughter-in-law became emotional and violent. They were yelling obscenities, throwing fists and kicking at others in the death chamber witness area.

His son, Gordon Coble, pounded on the execution chamber windows and shouted "no" as his father was executed, the Houston Chronicle reported. Another son Dalton joined his brother, the report said. Officers stepped in and say the witnesses continued to resist. They were eventually moved to a courtyard and the two men were handcuffed.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jeremy Desel said the two men were arrested on a charge of resisting arrest and taken to the Walker County Jail.

A single dose of pentobarbital was administered to Coble and he was pronounced dead 11 minutes later at 6:24 p.m. He gasped several times before he began to snore.

Coble received the lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the August 1989 shooting deaths of Robert and Zelda Vicha, the parents of his estranged wife, their son, and a police officer at separate homes in Axtell, northeast of Waco.

Coble also tied up four children and kidnapped his estranged wife, threatening to rape and kill her, the Morning News reported. He was arrested at the end of a chase.

Coble, once described by a prosecutor as having "a heart full of scorpions," and was the oldest inmate executed by Texas since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.

The Vietnam veteran was convicted of capital murder in 1990. In 2007, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial on punishment. On retrial in 2008, a second jury sentenced him to death.

I grew up in Axtell and around the Vichas.  I still remember the day this happened.   This day is a long time coming he shouldve been killed years ago.  That motherfucker deserved far worse than a simple injection.  The world is a little less evil today.
